| Report: Parcells might leave Miami; Lions on radar
FREE PRESS STAFF • December 29, 2008
Just one year after taking the reins - and leading a nearly unprecedented overnight turnaround - at Miami, Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells may already be looking for a new job.
One team that interests Parcells: the Detroit Lions, according to a report by ESPN.
There's a clause in Parcells' contract that allows him to walk away from the Dolphins if owner Wayne Huizenga sells the team. Huizenga agreed to sell the Dolphins to Stephen Ross and hopes to finalize the deal next month. If that were to happen, Parcells would have the ability to leave without breaching his contract. This would then open the door for Parcells to join a different organization's front office.
The report lists the Lions, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders as teams that are on Parcells' 'radar.' It did note, however, that if Parcells' son-in-law Scott Pioli - another name mentioned as a potential candidate to become the Lions' next GM - is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells would likely back away.
Pioli is currently the New England Patriots' vice president.
