| Phillies re-sign Jamie Moyer to a two-year contract
Left-hander Jamie Moyer signed a two-year contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today.
Moyer, 46, went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts for the Phillies this past season, leading the team in wins. He allowed three runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, from June 6 through Aug. 21, becoming the first Phillie to do so since 1967.
For the eighth straight season, Moyer surpassed 30 starts and for the second straight year he earned the win in the Phillies' National League East Division Championship-clinching game in his final start of the season.
Moyer finished the season with 246 career wins, which is tied for 47th on Major League Baseball's all-time list. Among pitchers who were active at the end of the 2008 season, he ranks fifth. With the announced retirements of Greg Maddux and Mike Mussina, Moyer moves up to third on the active list.
Originally selected by the Cubs in the 1984 draft, Moyer is 246-185 with a 4.19 ERA in 637 career games (584 starts). Since being acquired by the club on Aug. 19, 2006, Moyer has gone 35-21 with a 4.33 ERA in 74 starts, with the Phillies going 46-28 (.622) in his outings. | |
