| Marlins release Treanor
One of the Marlins leaders and veteran players has been released. Catcher Matt Treanor, who was being shopped for weeks, was let go early Thursday morning, the team announced at the Winter Meetings.
The 32-year-old catcher was the Marlins' Opening Day starter, but his 2008 season was marred by a left hip strain.
In the Marlins organization since 1997, Treanor was respected for his defense and ability to work with pitchers. He appeared in 65 games and batted .238 with two home runs and 23 RBIs.
On Oct. 1, Treanor underwent a "sports hernia" surgery, which essentially repaired tears in his left hip area. The injury requires about six weeks of recovery, and Treanor should be healthy for the start of Spring Training.
By releasing Treanor, the Marlins' 40-man roster is now at 39, which means the team now can participate in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft. Teams have to have less than 40 on their roster to take part in the Draft.
The husband of U.S. Olympic beach volleyball Gold medalist, Misty May-Treanor, Treanor spent 10 1/2 seasons in the Minor Leagues before getting his big league break in 2004. He has primarily been a backup, although he started a majority of the first half.
