| Monday, November 24, 2008 MLB whispers Tony Paul / The Detroit News
The Mets, like so many of us, are stunned at right-hander Derek Lowe 's reported asking price -- five years, $15 million per -- and have all but given up on signing the highly regarded starter they earlier this offseason had hoped to lock into their 2009 rotation. According to a report in the New York Daily News, rather than waltzing with the Red Sox and the Yankees in a sure-to-be-intense bidding war over Lowe, a 35-year-old Dearborn native, GM Omar Minaya and Co. now are focusing on cheaper options. Among the names being thrown around are a trio of right-handers -- free agent Jon Garland and a pair of trade possibilities in Javier Vazquez of the White Sox and Edwin Jackson of the Rays. | |
