Marlins add four to 40-man roster
Contracts of Hayes, Leroux, Trahern and Wood selected

The Marlins added four players to their 40-man roster on Thursday, selecting the contract of catcher Brett Hayes, as well as right-handed pitchers Chris Leroux, Dallas Trahern and Tim Wood, it was announced by Larry Beinfest, president of baseball operations.

The 24-year-old Hayes, the 79th overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, split the 2008 season between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Albuquerque, batting .256 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 91 games.

Leroux, also 24, was the Marlins' seventh-round pick in 2005, and was 6-7 with a 3.65 ERA and one save in 57 relief appearances with Class A Jupiter in 2008. The native of Montreal struck out 78 batters in 74 innings.

Trahern, who turns 23 on Nov. 29, was acquired in the monster trade with the Tigers last December that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit and Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin to South Florida. In 2008, while playing in the thin air of Albuquerque, N.M., Trahern made 21 starts and struggled to a 5-11 record with a 6.16 ERA. The year before, with Double-A Erie, he went 12-6 with an ERA of 3.87.

Wood was the Marlins' 44th-round pick in 2002 and spent the majority of 2008 with the Hammerheads, going 5-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 27 games -- one start. The 26-year-old underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery three years ago and, because of his improvements since, won't be made available for other teams to pick up in the Rule 5 Draft.
