Tigers won't pick up Edgar Renteria's option for next year

CHICAGO -- The Tigers won't pick up shortstop Edgar Renteria's option for next season, team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said today.

The decision leaves shortstop and catcher as the two open spots in next year's lineup.

Dombrowski wouldn't rule out re-signing Renteria as a free agent, but said the club would look at other options.

In another development, Dombrowski indicated the club will seek a ninth-inning closer from outside the organization to replace Todd Jones, but said he didn't anticipate being involved in what is expected to be the high bidding for free agent Francisco Rodriguez, who this season with the Angels set the all-time saves record.

Maybe no Rent. They may still sign him for a lower pay rate as a free agent.

I think they are just gonna keep Santiago at SS and we'll be fine.
