Anyone ever eat a pomegranate? It's been my lifelong dream to try one...well at least it has been for about a year now.

By dream I don't literally mean that's like my main goal in life or anything, but I really want to try one.

The guy my mom dates grows them but sadly they aren't in season this time of year Frown

I wonder if you can make pies out of them?

You, sir need some help!

Probably so, if you tried.

But, I'm not sure how great that would taste.

Pomegranates are probably the most complicated fruit you'll ever see:

Pomegranate juice is great and I do see some pomegranate-apple, pomegranate-pear, and pomegranate-pumpkin pie recipes. I'm sure you could make pomegranate meringue pie if you wanted to.

They are so stupid to eat. You have to suck on the seeds to get the pulp off, meanwhile making a complete mess and looking somewhat stupid. Like you are trying to seduce the fruit in front of you. I prefer to stick with the juice, very good.

I've had the juice, it's great. I thought I read on somewhere that if you put pomegranates in water it's easier to get a hold of the seeds (or arils to be more precise).

If all else fails make a lemon meringue pie but leave out the lemon juice and instead add half a cup of any other sort of liquid.

Some might be better than others. I wouldn't recommend these:
Guinness meringue pie
Dom Perignon meringue pie
V8 meringue pie
Starbucks meringue pie

You want the recipe for a Guinness meringue pie? Okay, here we go.

WARNING: I'm going from memory so if your pie doesn't work too bad.

I can't remember the recipe for a meringue crust, so let's use a regular one.
Take one and one-third cups flour and cut in one and one-third cups shortening. Add a few teaspoons of water. Press it against a nine-inch pie plate and bake it for 15ish minutes at 375 degrees or until golden brown.

Next, separate 3 eggs. Next, put some sugar (2 cups?) in a sauce pan and add some cornstarch (half a cup?) and water (1 cup?). Cook over medium heat until stiff. Add half of this mixture to the eggs and stir. Mix this back into the sauce pan, add 3 tsp. of butter and let boil for 1 minute and then remove from heat. Add 1/2 cup of Guinness (or 1/2 cup of lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon of grated lemon peel) and a couple drops of food coloring.

Take a mixing bowl with the 3 egg whites and add some cream of tartar (1/2 teaspoon?) slowly beat 6 tablespoons of sugar one at a time and continue beating until stiff.

Pour pie filling in pie crust and spread meringue topping over filling creating lots of peaks. Bake for 12 minutes or so at 275 degrees until golden brown.

Let cool for a few hours and there you go!

I finally got one! The stupid things cost $2.50 each. I was really disappointed. They had no flavor Frown Maybe they weren't ripe or something? I've decided that anything you wait that long for is never worth it. Whenever you wait a really long time for something you'll never be happy with the results. The lesson is, if you think you want something, get it now!

You just cut them open and eat the seeds. It's pretty simple but not as good as I was hoping.

UPDATE: I've had a few pomegranates since my first experience and they were all at least decent. My mom's boyfriend gave me one the other day that he said was ripe, I ate it today and it was very good!

They're actually really simple to take apart, too....

Hold it like it's a globe or something and cut the equator and Prime Meridian. Don't pierce the seeds, just the skin. Peel the skin away and then take out the seeds. Quite simple.

For you drunks out there.....

GRENADINE:

Take 1.5 cups of pomegranate seeds
2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup water

1. Combine all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and process briefly to break up the seeds. Transfer to a 1-quart Mason jar and set the jar aside for 3 days in a cool, dark place, but don't refrigerate.

2. Strain the contents through a fine sieve into a 4-cup glass measuring cup. Allow the liquid to drip through; this could take up to 30 minutes.

3. Transfer the strained liquid to a medium-size nonreactive saucepan. Bring just to a boil over low heat, about 10 minutes.

4. Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature before using. Store the Grenadine in the refrigerator, where it should keep for up to 6 months.

You don't drink grenadine (although I suppose you could)...

you add it to drinks.
