Gary Sheffield began a rehabilitation program for his surgically repaired right shoulder this week and remains on course to participate in spring training, his attorney said Wednesday.

“It’s still early in the process, but, if anything, there’s reason for optimism,” Rufus Williams said in a telephone interview. “There have been no complications since the surgery.”

Sheffield, the Tigers’ 39-year-old designated hitter, underwent arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 8 to repair a torn labrum and remove bone chips from the shoulder.

The team has said Sheffield should be able to hit during spring training but has acknowledged that he may not be ready to play in the outfield by then. Sheffield batted .265 with 25 home runs and 75 RBIs in 133 games this year, mostly as a DH.

“He’s progressing well,” said Williams, who spent time with Sheffield last week. “The rehab will go as his body takes it. I’m sure he’s going to pick up (more activity) as time goes along.”

Williams said Sheffield has also spent time this off-season working on the launch of a new shoe line and speaking to school groups about overcoming obstacles in life.
