Clete Thomas back with Tigers; Clevlen to Toledo

SAN FRANCISCO -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced after Wednesday's game that outfielder Clete Thomas (ankle) was being recalled from the 15-day disabled list and his rehabilitation assignment in Toledo.

Outfielder Brent Clevlen (.208 with some nice defense in 10 games) was optioned to Toledo to make room on the 25-man roster.

Thomas (.292 with Detroit) could start in right field Friday night in San Diego if Magglio Ordonez's side and back spasms that occurred in Wednesday's game become a problem, though, Leyland did not believe Ordonez's injury would hold him back.

Ordonez said he aggravated it on a swing in the game.

Leyland added that the roster move to activate reliever Joel Zumaya (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list will be made Friday in San Diego, where the Tigers open a three-game series that night

Clevlen sure did make some sweet plays on defense.

Dolsi Hits

From San Fran - Yes, that was pitcher Freddy Dolsi hitting for the Tigers in the top of the ninth, but getting replaced on the mound for the start of the bottom of the ninth after he struck out.

Why did he hit?

Because the Tigers were down to Jeff Larish on the bench and manager Jim Leyland needed to hold a hitter back just in case the Giants caused trouble and sent the game extra innings. Leyland said he might have taken a chance with Larish if it had been a run-producing situation, but otherwise no.

The reason he was down to Larish, by the way, is because he had sent in Clevlen for Thames after the sixth, had used Hollimon as a pinch-hitter, and Raburn as a replacement for Magglio, who experienced muscle spasms in his side (not thought to be serious).

Leyland also didn't want to use Brandon Inge, whose strained oblique has been giving him problems. So that's why Dolsi hit, and struck out, despite the fact he was coming out of the game.

By the way, Clete Thomas is being recalled from his injury rehab assignment, and Clevlen was optioned to Toledo. The Tigers needed another LH hitter and Thomas has more speed.

Dolsi may as well have pitched the ninth

And I don't understand why Leyland took Thames out after the 6th.


Let him have another at bat and try to keep his homer streak going!

Why didn't he pinch hit with Rogers or one of the pitchers that has a chance (albeit very slight) at getting a hit?

That is what I love about this board; We criticize Leyland Win or Lose when he does something questionable.


On that other board; If Leyland does something that causes a loss, Everyone starts a bitching post but if he does something questionable but we still win, anyone that criticizes him is a troll or an idiot or a moron.

Like I always said, just because something works doesn't mean it was the right decision.

Well Miner was the pitcher coming in anyways, so he should've batted.
