| 06/06/2008 10:55 PM ET Bonderman reportedly might miss start Willis could be option if Tigers need someone Sunday By Jason Beck / MLB.com
DETROIT -- The Tigers had been weighing how to fit Dontrelle Willis and Armando Galarraga into their rotation. Now, that might not be a problem anymore, because the Tigers could have a new issue among their starters.
Privacy issues prevented the club from commenting on a cbssports.com report that Jeremy Bonderman visited a doctor on Friday to have his shoulder examined. But manager Jim Leyland acknowledged that they now have multiple decisions to make in their pitching staff.
The report cited club sources saying that Bonderman was being checked for a possible circulation problem, and could go on the disabled list. The Tigers still have Bonderman listed as their starter for Sunday's game against Cleveland, but Leyland's postgame comments showed uncertainty.
"I have several decisions pending on circumstances that I don't care to discuss," Leyland said when asked about Galarraga and his rotation. "I'm not at will to discuss."
The question regarding their Monday starter appears to be answered, though no starter has officially been listed for that contest. Galarraga threw a side session in the bullpen during the ninth inning of Friday's game, and is on track to start Monday.
With Galarraga preparing for Monday's start, that would seemingly free up Willis to start Sunday if needed. Both Galarraga and Willis pitched Tuesday at Oakland in a piggyback start, with Galarraga following Willis.
Bonderman, who wasn't in the clubhouse Friday, is 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 12 starts this season. The velocity on his fastball has been down in several starts, though it has improved recently. He allowed three runs on 12 hits over seven innings in his most recent outing last Sunday at Seattle, striking out five while walking no one.

| Bonderman Likely Out For the Season
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today placed righthanded pitcher Jeremy Bonderman on the 15-day disabled list.
Bonderman was examined yesterday at the Detroit Medical Center and it was determined he has a blood clot of the axillary vein due to thoracic outlet compression syndrome. Bonderman underwent a thromblysis last night, followed by an angioplasty this morning at the Detroit Medical Center, performed by Dr. Monte Harvill under the supervision of team physician Dr. Stephen Lemos. He will undergo further examination of his condition at a later date. Bonderman most likely will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2008 season.

| That definitely does sound like the end of the season. He will have to be on anticoagulation drugs for at least 6 months that will preclude any physical activity like pitching.
I think I will send him a get well card c/o the Tigers. That's a shitty thing to go through at any time in life, but in your mid 20s it's especially rough. Thank goodness they found it though. It could have killed him.

| Jeremy Bonderman likely out for the season
By JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • June 7, 2008
The Tigers have probably lost Jeremy Bonderman for the remainder of the season, after the right-hander was found to have a blood clot in his axillary vein.
Bonderman underwent a thrombolysis to break up the clot on Friday night, and then an angioplasty this morning at the Detroit Medical Center.
Kevin Rand, the team’s head athletic trainer, said Bonderman could be discharged from the hospital as early as this afternoon, but he may need to have another procedure once it is determined what caused the clot to form.
Rand said the first rib on Bonderman’s right side was “most likely” the cause of the compression. If that rib needs to be removed, Bonderman’s season will probably be over.
Detroit players and manager Jim Leyland expressed their concern for Bonderman’s health prior to this afternoon’s game, apart from his contributions as a pitcher.
“At first, you hear ‘blood clot’ and you think, ‘That’s serious. You can die from that,’” said Brandon Inge, Bonderman’s longtime teammate. “It’s in the upper torso, arm region, so that’s very concerning.
“He’s a great representative of this organization. He’s played hard since he’s been here. He’s worked hard. He’s been the face of the pitching staff for a long time.”
The Tigers placed Bonderman on the 15-day disabled list prior to this afternoon’s game. They did not immediately replace him with another player, because Leyland expects reliever Aquilino Lopez to return from the bereavement list in time for Monday night’s series finale.
Bonderman is 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 12 starts this season. He has batted at least three physical ailments since signing a four-year, $38-million contract prior to last season: a blister on his middle finger that forced him to the disabled list last May, elbow inflammation late last season, and now the most serious of them all.
Since signing the contract, he is 14-13 with a 4.80 ERA.

| Stupid Fox pregame. Bondo got a brief mention and it appeared that the general consensus was "as if they need one more thing in their disappointing season." SCREW 'EM. They all hate Detroit anyway--why do they even broadcast our games? | |

| Jeremy Bonderman likely out for the season by Steve Kornacki Saturday June 07, 2008, 1:37 PM
Jeremy Bonderman's season likely will be over if further surgery is required in connection to the Thoracic Outlet Compression Syndrome that caused a blood clot of the axillary vein in his right arm.
Bonderman underwent a thrombolysis Friday night at the Detroit Medical Center to break up the blood clot, followed by angioplasty on Saturday morning. The procedure was performed by Dr. Monte Harvill under the supervision of team physician Dr. Stephen Lemos.
Bonderman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Tigers, and manager Jim Leyland said Armando Galarraga would start in his place Sunday with Dontrelle Willis going Monday. Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Bonderman is expected to be released from the hospital Saturday and is not in a life-threatening situation.
"He's in our thoughts and prayers," teammate Brandon Inge said.
Rand said, "[Friday] he came in complaining of a heavy feeling in his arm and had swelling under his arm pit. We have a pretty good indication it was compressed by a rib."
The first rib on his right side likely pinched the large vein, which carries blood from the arm to the heart and caused the thoracic outlet compression syndrome.
"Think of it like a straw getting pinched," Rand said.
Rand said "over-head athletes" who throw excessively are particularly prone to the syndrome.
Rand said it is similar and yet different from the left shoulder surgery Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers had March 30, 2007 to remove a blood clot and repair the axillary and brachial arteries. Rogers made his first start last year on June 22, nearly three months after the surgery.

| We all don't realize the dangers that goes along with playing in various sports full time. This has been a bad year for pitchers on many teams! I know that I was constantly havng back problems when I was working on becoming a pro golfer! After reading what Rand said, I am glad I stopped that endeaver. Pros kept wanting me to work harder and harder and it was because of golf, at pro level training, that I damaged both my knees! Who knows what damage that explosive swing I had was doing to my back also. I have been reading more and more about the injuries sports like baseball pitching and golfing does to your body. As Rand said: - Quote :
- Rand said "over-head athletes" who throw excessively are particularly prone to the syndrome.
So we need to do as Inge mentioned: - Quote :
- "He's in our thoughts and prayers," teammate Brandon Inge said.

| 06/08/2008 1:20 PM ET Rogers: Injury could be blessing Lefty knows what teammate Bonderman is going through By Scott McNeish / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Tigers starting pitcher Kenny Rogers believes teammate Jeremy Bonderman's potentially season-ending injury could become a blessing in disguise.
Rogers would know.
After all, he went through a similar situation in 2001.
"He's lucky," Rogers said, "because he'll feel better, and he'll be able to do things that his body wants to do, but right now, he's limited."
The Tigers put Bonderman on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday after he had two medical procedures to relieve a blood clot in his axillary vein caused by thoratic outlet compression syndrome, a pinching of the vein. He will undergo several examinations over the next few days to determine if his condition requires season-ending surgery to remove the first rib on his right side.
Seven years ago, Rogers experienced a similar condition. He missed the last two and a half months of the 2001 season after an artery and circulation problem. He had season-ending surgery to remove the first rib on the left-hander's left side.
"The way I was feeling at the time was similar," Rogers said. "It was tough to have energy, and what bothered me the most was the feel of where the ball was going to go."
Their conditions have a slight difference.
Rogers' blocked artery blocked blood flow from the heart to his arm. Bonderman's clot, however, dealt with the vein responsible for returning blood from this arm to his heart. Two different stages of circulation, but the situations share enough similarity for Rogers to talk about what Bonderman can expect if he requires surgery.
"He'll be better. When I came back, I -- without a doubt -- had significant improvement in blood flow," Rogers said. "I gained two, three mph, maybe even four. I think he'll be better for that."
Rogers had two reasons to call himself "happy" for Bonderman. First, Bonderman came out of a serious situation without trouble. Second, whenever Bonderman returns to the Tigers' rotation, whether it occurs later this season or next season, he could come back a better pitcher than the one that went 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 12 starts this season.
"I know he's disappointed, because he can't play for a while and all that, but I have no doubt that if they go in there and take his rib out, he's going to come back feeling better and throwing a lot better," Rogers said. "His velocity will get back to where it was normally.
"He's lucky, in a way."
