ANAHEIM -- The good news for the Tigers is that they have a winning record this season in games after getting shut out. The bad news is that at 4-3, they've had that many chances to rebound from a shutout.

It's not just the sheer number of games, but the innings. The Tigers haven't scored since Carlos Guillen's homer in the second inning of Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Twins. That's 19 consecutive scoreless innings, which is a scary enough statistic before considering that it's not their season high. That came after back-to-back shutouts to the White Sox April 12-13 for a total of 25 innings over four games.

In fact, the Tigers have five scoreless streaks of at least 14 innings this season. In this case, 12 of those innings came Monday night alone. It's a stunning contrast to Saturday's 19-3 win over the Twins in which Detroit scored 17 runs in a three-inning stretch.

It's against that backdrop that the Tigers will try to regroup against Ervin Santana and the Angels.

After going 16-for-33 with runners in scoring position last week against the Mariners and 11-for-22 in their first two games against the Twins, the Tigers are in an 0-for-16 funk over in the last two contests.

The Tigers headed into Monday's game batting .335 in victories and .216 in defeats, according to Bill James Online. Their OPS ranges from .989 in wins to .597 in losses. They're averaging nearly nine runs a game in wins compared with exactly two runs a game in losses.

There's a couple reasons manager Jim Leyland could figure when trying to explain how a team could run so hot and cold.

"Sometimes you have a real big night, and then you can run into a hot pitcher. That's one explanation," Leyland said. "One big explanation the other day was your lineup was a lot different."

The Tigers likely will have at least one lineup change coming Tuesday unless Gary Sheffield recovers quickly from a left oblique spasm that knocked him out of Monday's game after two at-bats. The slugger, who had been on a brief offensive upswing the last few games, apparently tweaked the left side of his back running out of the box and pulled up in obvious discomfort.

Pitching matchup

DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (3-4, 4.58 ERA)
Bonderman worked in and out of trouble all afternoon against the Mariners to notch his third win his last time out on Thursday. He had a runner on third in the first and third innings, and then loaded the bases with none out in the fifth, but escaped with only two earned runs. Bonderman had his share of troubles against the Angels last year, going 1-1 in three starts, but with an 8.27 ERA. Two of those starts were at Angel Stadium, where he had a 16.20 ERA.


LAA: RHP Ervin Santana (6-2, 3.24 ERA)
After claiming wins in six of his first seven starts, Santana has leveled off, going winless with two losses and a no-decision his past three starts. He's still throwing in the mid-90s with a quality slider and changeup, but the results haven't been the same: 13 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings (6.62 ERA) in those last three outings. He was touched for nine hits and four earned runs in six innings by the Blue Jays on Thursday, striking out seven to give him 57 Ks in 66 2/3 innings. He's 3-2 with a 5.46 ERA in 28 career innings against the Tigers.

Monday was the first time the Tigers took a scoreless game into extra innings since April 11, 2007, when Craig Monroe's 12th-inning grand slam opened the scoring in what ended up being a 4-1 victory at Baltimore. ... Reliever Denny Bautista is scheduled to make his second Minor League rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, this time for two innings. The Tigers will decide from there whether to activate him or give him another rehab outing. ... The Tigers are 16-44 at Angel Stadium since 1996.

I'm not going. My ticket isn't very good so it's not like I spent a bunch of money on it. Parking there isn't free so I'd have to pay. Gas here is $4.119 and I'd have to buy some. It's a nightmare to drive there with all the traffic and I should have left an hour ago. 9 hours to see a 3 hour game takes the fun out of it. I'll go see them in SF when I'm actually staying there. It's a lot less of a hassle.

Too bad you couldn't have made this decision a couple of days ago and tried to sell your ticket. I'm sure there's more Angels fans than Tigers fans in California and wouldn't have had that much problem selling it.

Not much of a demand for 1 ticket in the $18 seats. It's alright - an extra $18 wasn't going to put me in a Corvette or anything.

Such a hassle to get to Anaheim though. 60 miles of bumper to bumper traffic both ways. Then I have to buy parking. Then I have to buy food somewhere. Then I have to buy gas. Then I have lousy seats and have to drive all the way back in bumper to bumper traffic. Oh yeah, my car is a good 40 minute walk from my apartment - that's fun, too
