Tigers poor against righties, won't face White Sox's Buehrle

BOSTON -- Over the past year, the Tigers have become a sub-.500 team against right-handed starters, so it's news when a left-hander starts against them.

Thursday's news was that Chicago's Mark Buehrle won't be the next left-hander to start against the Tigers, but that Minnesota's Francisco Liriano might be.

Buehrle was due to face the Tigers on Saturday in Chicago. But when Thursday's White Sox-Twins game was rained out, the Sox didn't push back Buehrle's next start from Saturday to Sunday against the Tigers. They pushed it back two days, to Monday against Oakland.

Oakland "may be more susceptible to lefties," White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper told the Arlington Heights (Ill.) Daily Herald.

"And Buehrle is fine with a couple extra days off," Cooper said. "He'll still get his 33 starts and 200 innings. Take the rest now."

The Tigers will face right-handed starters in all three games in Chicago, including Jose Contreras, who was scheduled to pitch Thursday. (Interestingly, Contreras gave up four earned runs to the Tigers last weekend, Buehrle one.)

The Tigers' powerful, experienced lineup is primarily right-handed. They are 60-66 since the start of last season when a right-hander starts against them.

In the same span, they are 29-16 against left-handed starters.

Liriano was overpowering as a rookie in 2006, then missed last season because of elbow surgery. He might make his first major league start since the surgery against the Tigers on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

WRONG NUMBER: A call for the visiting clubhouse manager at Fenway Park mistakenly went to Jim Leyland's office phone Thursday. After he politely redirected the caller, the Tigers manager said, "If we don't win a few more, I might be the clubhouse man."

That's good that the Tigers won't have to face their best pitcher.
