The Detroit News
Power Rankings ...

The three managerial firings that took place in a mere four-day span last
week -- none a surprise, of course -- likely concludes the inseason
axings for 2008, but the pressure's on a select few general managers.

1. Cubs (1): It took the mighty Orioles to snap their 14-game Wrigley Field winning streak.
2. Angels (3): Figure this: They are 30-14 against teams over .500, 18-17 against teams below.
3. Red Sox (2): Since May 7, they are just 4-7 in games decided by a single run.
4. Rays (4): They've led the AL East 23 days in 2008, seven more than their first 10 years total.
5. Brewers (9): Who needs Eric Gagne? New closer Salomon Torres is 13-for-13 in save chances.
6. Cardinals (6): Since April 22, their bullpen has blown 16 of 32 save attempts, including Thursday's.
7. White Sox (7): John Danks lowered his road ERA to an MLB-best 1.48, compared to 5.23 in 2007.
8. Yankees (8): The Yankees are 4-1 in Joba Chamberlain's five starts, during which he has a 1.80 ERA.
9. A's (10): Rich Harden now is 31-0 in the 38 starts he's gotten four or more runs of support.
10. Phillies (5): Chase Utley was on an .034 slide (1-for-29) before banging out four hits Wednesday.
11. Twins (17): They've won nine straight, all against NL teams, because of starting pitching (2.17 ERA).
12. Orioles (14): George Sherrill is the sixth ever to get a save whiffing three straight with the bases loaded.
13. Marlins (12): Another fire sale! Ex-Tiger Mike Rabelo (.202, three HRs, 10 RBIs) just got demoted.
14. Diamondbacks (11): Randy Johnson has lost his last five starts, his second-longest streak ever.
15. Tigers (18): The last three years, they're 8-1 vs. St. Louis. Well, unless you count the World Series.
16. Mets (16): Jose Reyes already is just two triples shy of Mookie Wilson's franchise record of 62.
17. Rangers (13): On Thursday, Josh Hamilton returned from knee issues only to get beaned on his hand.
18. Braves (15): When .400 candidate Chipper Jones misses a start, the Braves are lowly - and 3-13.
19. Royals (23): They've won 10 of 11, just swept the Rockies and boast the best interleague record (12-3).
20. Dodgers (21): Ummm, why isn't Joe Torre on staff to coach the NL at the Yankee Stadium All-Star Game?
21. Blue Jays (19): In games decided on the final at-bat, they are just 4-16, including 0-7 at home.
22. Pirates (22): West Michigan's Nate McLouth has hit a wall. In June, he's hit just .236 with two HRs.
23. Indians (20): The lack of offense remains baffling - 39 times they've scored three or fewer runs.
24. Astros (25): After stealing 62 bases in April and May, they've been caught an MLB-most 11 times in June.
25. Giants (28): Their pinch-hitters are hitting .387 (12-for-31) with a homer and seven RBIs this month.
26. Reds (24): Since starting 2006 9-3, starter Bronson Arroyo is 18-30 with a 4.60 ERA.
27. Rockies (26): At 7-5, they're one of only four NL teams over .500 in interleague play.
28. Padres (27): Closer Trevor Hoffman has given up five homers, three more than all of last season.
29. Nationals (28): Their starters have just two wins in 25 games, despite a string of quality starts.
30. Mariners (30): Felix Hernandez's run of lasting at least five innings ended at 41 starts.
