| Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Nationals 9, Tigers 1 Bonderman stars as bullpen stinks Lynn Henning / The Detroit News
LAKELAND, Fla. -- These are baseball games, not movies.
A thumbs-up from his manager was nonetheless earned Tuesday by Jeremy Bonderman, who had one of the few good performances in what might have been the Tigers' worst game this Grapefruit League season, a 9-1 walloping at the hands of the Nationals at Joker Marchant Stadium.
A thumbs-down went to ESPN executives, who thought Tuesday's game might be of appeal to a national audience, which it was, as long as the folks watching were Nationals fans.
A second, more ominous thumbs-down went to Tim Byrdak, who displayed the Tigers bullpen is as much of a concern as Bonderman showed why starting pitching has been a strength two weeks before Opening Day.
"I was really happy with Bonderman," said Jim Leyland, the Tigers manager who has seen his pitching staff put together a Jekyll and Hyde spring, with the starters generally pitching well, while a depleted bullpen has been far less trustworthy.
"That's the best sinker I've seen him have in a long time," Leyland said after Bonderman allowed five hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings. "I was very pleased with him."
Byrdak, however, combined with fellow left-hander Clay Rapada to award the Nationals a seven-run sixth inning, which featured seven hits and two home runs.
Byrdak's ERA after eight appearances is a gruesome 10.00.
Leyland, trying to keep things in perspective, was candid about Tuesday's effort, but mindful of how Byrdak pitched in 2007.
"He was (awful)," Leyland said, not mincing words. "He quietly hasn't done much this spring.
"But he didn't do much last spring, and then he had a very good year (3-0 record, 3.20 ERA), and that counts for something. He gets a temporary reprieve because of what he did last year. But at some point, you've got to pick it up."
Bonderman, at least, has been fulfilling his March mission.
Leyland was cheering the 25-year-old right-hander's pitches Tuesday: a four-seam fastball that climbed as high as 96 mph; a two-seam sinker that particularly pleased Leyland; and, of course, a change-up that Bonderman has been using frequently and with greater authority.
"I threw a ton, maybe 15 of 'em," Bonderman said of his off-speed pitch. "I'm learning how to use it: reading swings so I can use it more effectively.
"When you feel comfortable with a pitch, you can throw it with consistency. I think I'm good at reading reactions from hitters. My biggest thing is, I need to throw it (change-up) over the plate more."
Byrdak will be going north with the Tigers, joining Bobby Seay as one of two left-handed relievers. At least those are Leyland's plans this week. It would please both parties if Byrdak got back to his 2007 form.
If he saw any redemption to the outing -- and he did -- it had to do with his arm and his mind.
"Today was the strongest I felt all spring," he said. "But instead of making pitches, I tried to blow away everybody.
"It's not about velocity, it's about location. I look at this as me being at the exact same stage as last year. But a six-run inning is not what you want to put up there (on the scoreboard) when you're trying to make the big leagues."
One thing the Tigers pitchers managed to collectively accomplish Tuesday: some sort of record for collective distance on Nationals home runs.
Lastings Milledge hit one off the concrete pavilion beyond the grass berm in left field -- a mammoth shot that traveled all of 430 feet. Ronnie Belliard hit one nearly three-quarters of the way up the berm in left-center. Jason Maxwell's three-run shot off Byrdak was also a healthy wallop against the grassy slope in left.
The Tigers are hoping to go the distance in 2008. A little less distance by opposing hitters will be to their advantage.
