Pudge's two homers pace Tigers
Catcher leads Majors in spring taters; Renteria drives in four
By Jason Beck / MLB.com

TIGERS 11, ASTROS 4
at Lakeland, Fla.
Wednesday, March 12

Astros at the plate: Lance Berkman opened Houston's scoring in the second inning with a solo homer. Jose Cruz Jr. had two doubles, including an RBI double in a two-run seventh.

Tigers at the plate: Playing with their projected Opening Day lineup for the first time this spring, the Tigers smacked four home runs and four doubles over the first four innings. Ivan Rodriguez homered twice to run away with the Spring Training lead at six. Edgar Renteria and Placido Polanco added homers, and Renteria drove in four runs.

Astros on the mound: Woody Williams' spring struggles continued for a second consecutive start by allowing eight runs on 10 hits over three innings, including four home runs. Former Tiger Brian Moehler followed with one run allowed over three innings.

Tigers on the mound: Kenny Rogers became the first Detroit pitcher to go five innings in a game this spring, recovering from his second-inning trouble to retire the final 10 batters he faced. Virgil Vasquez gave up two runs in as many innings.

Grapefruit League records: Astros 6-10; Tigers 11-5-1.

Up next: The Tigers stay home in Lakeland, Fla., to host the Atlanta Braves in a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Joker Marchant Stadium on Thursday. Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled to make his fourth start of the spring opposite Jo-Jo Reyes.

Astros' radio announcers sure are in awe of our starting lineup. They kept going on about it how powerful it is and were glad when the tigers begun substituting in it.

Tigers 11, Astros 4
Tigers bash Astros with 4 homers, 20 hits
Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

LAKELAND, Florida -- So, this is what the Tigers had in mind for 2008.

Hitting four home runs and three doubles in the first three innings, the Tigers ran up a quick 9-1 lead and then finished off the Houston Astros, 11-4, Wednesday at Marchant Stadium.

Two of Detroit's four home runs came from Pudge Rodriguez, an unlikely candidate for the Grapefruit League's premier power hitter, which is his status after hitting his fifth and sixth homers of the preseason.

Placido Polanco and Edgar Renteria also homered for the Tigers, who had 20 hits Wednesday. During their four-inning outburst, they drove an additional four fly balls deep to the warning-track regions of Marchant Stadium,
Kenny Rogers became the first Tigers pitcher to throw five innings. He allowed a home run to Lance Berkman in the second, when he also gave up a single and a double, but Rogers was otherwise flawless.

Gary Sheffield broke an 0-for-14 string with a double in the first inning. He flew out to the center- field fence in his next at-bat, perhaps signaling an end to his early slump.
