Could there be a better solution to the Tigers' leftfield needs than Raul Ibanez?
Detroit president/general manager Dave Dombrowski acknowledged last week that he will look for a left-handed hitter this winter. Ibanez was among the top outfield run producers in baseball this year -- and he's left-handed.
Ibanez, 35, had 105 RBIs for the Seattle Mariners this season. That's one less than Adam Dunn, with 68 fewer strikeouts.
His contract would fit nicely into the Tigers' plans. He will earn $5.5 million next year -- not much more than what Craig Monroe made as this year's starting leftfielder -- and then become a free agent. In other words, Detroit could acquire him without worrying that he would block Cameron Maybin from becoming an everyday player in 2009.
Ibanez is also a solid citizen, respected throughout the game for his professionalism and steady play. He would be a good fit in the clubhouse.
So, why would Seattle consider trading him?
Simple: The Mariners need to find an everyday role for star outfield prospect Adam Jones, and trading Ibanez is one of their many options.
Seattle would prefer to deal Richie Sexson and shift Ibanez to first base. If that doesn't happen, though, the Tigers should be among the first to make an offer for Ibanez.
And it's no secret what the Mariners would want in return: starting pitchers.
Seattle suffered through dismal seasons from Jeff Weaver (7-13, 6.20) and Horacio Ramirez (8-7, 7.16) and would probably ask for multiple big-league-ready starters in return for Ibanez. Detroit may be able to oblige if Kenny Rogers returns to solidify one spot in the rotation.
One caveat on Ibanez: He's a below-average defender, so the Tigers would need to accept some misplayed balls in Comerica Park's spacious leftfield. His contribution to the lineup, though, would make the move worthwhile.

| I wouldn't mind seeing him. We have plenty of ML-ready starters that could be expendable (Robertson, Jurrjens, Vasquez, Tata, Bazardo, etc.) Some of them are more promising than others but at some point we have to get rid of some of our pitching prospects...that is unless we plan on going with a 9 man rotation. | |

| I like Ibanez. Maybe he and Sheff could "platoon" in LF. | |
