Schilling Issue Serious

Roughly a week before pitchers and catchers are due to report to spring training, the Herald has learned today that right-hander Curt Schilling has a significant shoulder injury that could end the veteran right-hander’s season and is causing tension and friction between the player and club.

While neither Schilling nor Sox officials could be reached for comment, baseball sources have indicated that the club has at least inquired about the possibility of voiding the one-year, $8 million contract Schilling signed last November. It is not known to what lengths the Sox have gone on the matter, but their threat has been serious enough to create a conflict between Schilling and the Red Sox.

While the precise nature of Schilling’s injury is not known, it is believed that the right-hander is suffering from an injury to the rotator cuff and/or labrum that might require surgery. It is possible that the sides disagree on how to treat Schilling’s ailment and that a course of treatment, too, is a part of their disagreement.

If Schilling has surgery on his shoulder, it is almost certain that he would be unable to pitch this season.

Presumably, Schilling underwent a physical exam when the Red Sox signed him to his guaranteed contract in November. It is unclear whether Schilling’s current problem was overlooked at the time or if he suffered the injury at a later date.

Obviously, stay tuned as this is a developing story.

Well there goes 20% of the Red Sox rotation.

To show my anatomy class is paying off, here's what I can tell you about the rotator cuff:

It's comprised of 4 muscles:

  1. Supraspinatus - abducts arm
  2. Infraspinatus - adducts arm
  3. Teres Minor - laterally rotates arm
  4. Subscapularis - medially rotates arm

Report: Schilling gets cortisone shot
Red Sox pitcher receives treatment for ailing right shoulder
The Associated Press

BOSTON -- Curt Schilling received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder on Friday, beginning a treatment plan the Red Sox hope will bring the right-hander back before the end of the season, The Boston Globe reported.

The painkilling shot would allow Schilling to begin rehabbing an injured shoulder tendon. Boston's team physician believes the tendon is damaged, not torn, and that rehabilitation gives Schilling his best chance to play this year.

Schilling's physician, Dr. Craig Morgan, disagrees, saying the tendon is torn and requires surgery.

On Saturday, Morgan said he could not confirm that Schilling had received the cortisone shot, but repeated his opinion that the team's recommended course of action is doomed to fail.

He said that within a couple of weeks of the shot, "[Schilling] won't even be able to exercise."

Schilling could not immediately be reached for comment. A team spokesman said Saturday that Red Sox would not comment.

The team signed the 41-year-old pitcher to an $8 million, one-year contract in the offseason. Morgan said Schilling agreed to follow the team's strong recommendation to rehabilitate the shoulder because he was concerned the Red Sox would attempt to invalidate his contract if he chose surgery.

Schilling spent seven weeks on the disabled list last year with tendinitis in the shoulder. But he passed the physical for the contract he agreed to on Nov. 6.

Schilling was 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA in 24 games last season. In the postseason, he went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA to help the Red Sox win their second World Series title in four years.

Why doesn't Schilling just retire? Why continue to endure the pain? He has made a lot of money in his career, move on!

He retires, no money. Their DRs messed up if it is an old injury.

Don't ya just love the concern the Sox have if it is a new injury. Big business rules it all!

Sox prompted to place Schilling on DL
Veteran shelved for at least 60 days; makes room for Holdzkom
By Ian Browne / MLB.com

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As inevitable as it was, the Red Sox still had to make it official. They did so on Thursday morning, placing right-hander Curt Schilling on the 60-day disabled list.

Schilling, trying to bounce back from right shoulder woes, has been limited to strictly indoor exercises this spring.

There is no timetable for the 41-year-old Schilling to get on a throwing program. It's all a matter of how he responds.

The best-case scenario is that the big righty could return around the All-Star break.

Schilling is planning on joining the Red Sox next week for their trip to Tokyo, where they will open their season against the A's.

The Red Sox were prompted to make the move with Schilling on Thursday because they needed to clear a roster spot for right-handed reliever Lincoln Holdzkom, who was brought back to the organization as a free agent.

Holdzkom was selected by the Phillies in last December's Rule 5 Draft. However, the Phils -- as is their right -- offered him back to the Red Sox.

But Holdzkom opted for free agency, as was his right, and the Red Sox have signed him to a Major League contract. He reported to Fort Myers on Thursday.

Holdzkom split his 2007 season between Double-A Portland (4-1, 3.47 ERA) and Triple-A Pawtucket (1-0, 1.59 ERA).

The Red Sox made some other roster moves on Thursday, optioning right-hander Devern Hansack and outfielder Jonathan Van Every to Triple-A Pawtucket.

In addition, the Sox returned non-roster invitees Lee Gronkiewicz, Michael Tejera and Jon Switzer -- all pitchers -- to Minor League camp.

If it's the same thing as Sheffie, he's in for a few months of rehab!
