I found this one. This is the first Tigers game I ever went to. It was Haren vs. Verlander. The original is located here.

Don't count on Craig Monroe to do it. He has as little plate discipline as anyone I have ever seen in the majors.

I agree. Let's hope they get fired up a little. Of course, Oakland got swept by the Diamondbacks and are out to prove something. But, the Tigers are a great team. They'll be OK. Gotta put some heat in those bats.

They are not trying to steal bases. They are being sent on hit and run plays so that they can advance to third on a base hit. When there are less than two outs they are also trying to avoid the double play. The fact that they are the slowest runners is what makes Leyland send them. He is trying to compensate for their lack of speed. It's aggressive, and for the most part this season, it has worked.

My limited baseball knowledge makes me think that he isn't getting much to hit at with a 0-1 count.

This time it didn't work. Instead of a 2-1 lead, it is 1-1 and anything could happen now. Thames and maggs left Gomez at 2nd. Maggs especially is overdue for some kind of a hit.

I am so tired of seeing someone on second base in close games with less than two outs and we can't move them over. If I were Leyland, every single player would be bunting every single day in BP. Monroe had the chance to move Guillen over and didn't do it. It's a little league skill.

Shelton, same thing. Now it's two outs on two pop flies. Ridiculous.

Well, you are referring to the same two rally killers who have been killing potential rallies all season long. When there are people on base, Shelton and Monroe will almost surely leave them right there. They are the weak links in the batting order for sure.

Well, as soon as I saw Rodney on the mound, I already resigned myself by saying, "The A's are going to win it right now. Rodney has been absolutely terrible." And sure enough, Rodney did not disappoint. I just don't understand why Leyland keeps sending him out there to blow game after game. How much longer does Leyland go with this guy before he realizes that Rodney is not a good pitcher in the clutch?

Agreed. We have to learn how to grind out runs.

And since when did everyone forget to take outside strikes to the opposite field?

Thames, Inge and Maggs - all guilty.

Peyton didn't forget - and the A's beat us as a result.

I know it's just one game, but it's one we should have won with fundamentals you learn in little league. We had Carlos Guillen standing on second base with no one out. The count was then 0-1 on Craig Monroe. Craig should have bunted to the third base side, to draw the third baseman off the bag, and Guillen should move over easily. Now you have a runner on third with one out. The defense will draw the infield in, and that increases the chance of a base hit if it is hit on the infield. It also allows for a sacrifice fly, which puts the go ahead run across the plate.

It's a simple game when you play it right.

Shame that the only one who kept us in the game offensively had to take one in the chops when we lost it. Crosby laid him out (clean hit).

So, does this mean we're worse than the Diamondbacks?

You're assuming that Craig Monroe knows how to play fundamental baseball. Remember that this is the same guy who cannot tell the difference between a pitch down the heart of the plate from one bouncing in the dirt. This guy has no visible plate discipline at all. His best position is the bench.

Leyland gives the sign to the third base coach, who tells Monroe what to do. I assume Monroe can read the signs.

And when is Rodney (and Zumaya for that matter) going to learn how to throw a pitch hard and not throw it only 55 feet.

It seems like they have at least two or three while they are in... luckily they have done it with no one on base.

Where was Polanco in the 10th? Our best hitter against these guys is sitting on the bench. As good as Leyland has been this year he was awful managing today. I believe any one of us could have donea better job managing today. It was pathetic and it s.ucked to watch it knowing full well the outcome. Horrible and ruins my day. I dont mind a manager getting beat if he pulls out all the stops and uses all his weapons but I cant stomach a half-a.ssed attempt to manage a game.
