Keep the snow throwers and shovels handy this weekend. Southeast Michigan is in store for another winter treat, courtesy of Mother Nature.


Aspirin might prove handy, too for any rush-hour headaches that might occur as a result of the snow which is due to begin late Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday.

By the time it’s over, the National Weather Service is calling for accumulations between 5 to 8 inches.

A low-pressure system tracking across the eastern part of the country is the culprit, according to senior meteorologist Phil Kurimski at the weather service’s White Lake Township office. He said the heaviest amounts are expected during Friday evening into Saturday morning. The snow will then begin to taper off during the afternoon hours.

Highs Friday will be in the mid to upper 20s. Lows will be in the low 20s.

Saturday will be cloudy with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s and lows at night in the low to mid-teens.

But the bulk of that snow will be north of Detroit

Snow storm to dump 9 inches of snow on Metro Detroit

A storm system headed south to the Ohio Valley is expected to dump as much as 9 inches of snow in Metro Detroit by Saturday evening as it moves through southeastern Michigan.

While Detroit's northern neighbors usually get pounded during a storm like this one, it will be the city's southern neighbors that bear the brunt of the storm this time around, said Dave Gurney, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

The weather service has issued a winter storm warning that will go into effect at noon today and run through 4 p.m. Saturday, Gurney said. The length of the warning is not unusual, he said.

Snow will begin falling in the afternoon today, resulting in 1-2 inches of fluff, Gurney said. It will continue overnight, resulting in 3-5 more inches. The snow will continue into Saturday, especially from Eight Mile road south, Gurney said.

Temperatures today will be in the upper 20s, making the snow powdery.

"It will not be the really heavy, wet stuff that hurts your back when you are shoveling," he said.

Wind is not expected to be a factor, Gurney said.
