Tigers contacted agent of catcher Miguel Olivo

December 14, 2007
By JON PAUL MOROSI
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

As part of a continuing effort to add catching depth, the Tigers contacted the agent for Miguel Olivo after he was non-tendered by the Florida Marlins this week.

“I’ve had conversations with five or six teams, and the Tigers were one of them,” Martin Arburua told the Free Press today. “We’re still very early in the process.”

Olivo, 29, batted .237 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs this past season, when he was the Marlins’ starting catcher. He allowed 16 passed balls – tied for the most in baseball – but has a strong arm.

Olivo earned a $2 million base salary this year, plus $25,000 for appearing in more than 120 games.

He has spent time in five organizations and may be more attractive to Detroit in 2009 than in 2008. The Tigers’ two big-league catchers, Pudge Rodriguez and Vance Wilson, will be eligible for free agency after the coming season.

This is more the reason for the interest I would guess. Told you Marlins are our Major League farm system!
LMAO

Miguel Olivo earned $2MM in '07 and figures to make a touch more in '08. He gunned down an impressive 32.9% of baserunners this year.

Olivo signs one-year deal with Royals

Veteran to form catching duo in Kansas City with young Buck

The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY -- Catcher Miguel Olivo signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

The 29-year-old was the Florida Marlins' primary catcher the past two seasons and batted .237 in 2007.

Olivo was not tendered a contract by the Marlins before becoming a free agent. Florida acquired catching prospect Mike Rabelo from Detroit in a trade earlier this month at the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

The Royals and Olivo each hold mutual options for the 2009 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 6-foot, 220-pound Olivo has thrown out 31.2 percent of attempted base stealers the past two seasons, fourth best in the National League. Olivo has also played for the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, hitting .239 in his career with 61 home runs and 224 RBIs in 556 games.

"Miguel is a talented catcher with a power bat and a very strong throwing arm," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "With him and John Buck, they form one of the most powerful catching duos in baseball."
