Dombrowski, Dumars change on the fly to win; Millen's steady plans leave him a loser

Early in Dave Dombrowski's tenure as Tigers general manager, I asked him about the importance of having a clear plan, which I thought was lacking under the Randy Smith regime. His response was telling -- more telling than I realized then. He shifted the conversation away from the word "plan."

"It comes down to making good decisions," he said.

Building the 2010 Tigers around Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin was a plan; trading them for slightly older, more expensive established stars was a good decision.

Why have Dombrowski and Joe Dumars turned around their franchises while Matt Millen has failed miserably? I think you can start there. Dombrowski and Dumars make good decisions. Millen falls in love with a plan.

The most amazing part of the Miller/Maybin-Miguel Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis swap is how quickly it took place. On Monday, the Tigers had two seemingly untouchable minor league prospects. By Tuesday evening, both were gone.

Dombrowski was not worried about the public reaction (which has been positive, but that was hard to know before the trade became public). He was not worried about changing direction. He thought he could give his team a better chance to win the World Series by making the deal, so he did it.

Dumars has the same philosophy. Building around a gifted 7-foot Serbian was a decent plan, but when it didn't work out, Dumars decided that trading Darko Milicic for a first-round pick was a smart decision.

More than any executive I have ever covered, Dumars understands that what matters is the record. That's it.After the 2002-03 season, nobody called for Dumars to fire coach Rick Carlisle, whose first two seasons were a clear success. But Dumars wasn't worried about perceptions. He thought that firing Carlisle and hiring Larry Brown was the right decision for his franchise, and so he did it.

Let's contrast that with Millen. He keeps falling in love with plans, with big ideas, with possibilities.

When Millen drafted receivers with three straight first-round picks, he envisioned a light-'em-up Lions offense. But the third choice, especially, was a bad decision, and not just because Mike Williams turned out to be a bust. The third receiver on any team can never contribute enough to justify the use of a top-10 draft pick.

Then there is this: Dombrowski and Dumars are willing to divorce themselves from their past decisions -- even the great ones, like drafting Cameron Maybin or trading for Ben Wallace.

Meanwhile, Millen clings to past decisions. It is as though he is justifying those choices, even to himself.

The best franchise in the NFL, the New England Patriots, routinely lets high-profile players leave via free agency rather than spend too much money on them. Millen gave much-maligned draft pick Kalimba Edwards a ridiculous five-year extension after a few good games.

In the last two off-seasons, Millen slapped "franchise player" tags on Cory Redding and Jeff Backus, two decent players who are now paid like great ones. Redding and Backus are both Millen draftees, and Millen was not going to let them walk.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but Matt Millen knows football. He was considered a bright player. But being a successful general manager is not as simple as understanding the game.

Yes, Millen understands football. But if he is ever going to be a successful executive, he must come to understand himself.

He must understand how his emotions keep him from making good decisions, and why his championship fantasies keep him from a championship reality.

How about adding Michael Vick to that list?
