| GDT51: 5/30/14 - DET (30-20) AT SEA (26-27) - 10:10 p.m. ET --- AT --- Detroit Tigers AT Seattle MarinersFriday, May 30, 2014 Safeco Field, Seattle, WA Game Time - 10:10 p.m. EDT ______________________________________ Pitching matchup Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (5-4, 4.04 ERA)Verlander has been struggling with delivery adjustments as he tries to find his old form. He has given up 16 earned runs in his last 13 1/3 innings since the Orioles' five-run fifth inning off him May 14 in Baltimore. Mariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (3-1, 2.39 ERA)The 2013 All-Star suffered his first loss Sunday since returning from the disabled list at the start of May as he gave up two home runs in a 4-1 setback to the Astros. But Iwakuma has been outstanding with a 2.39 ERA and 0.823 WHIP in five starts. ______________________________________
PREVIEW Verlander looks to rebound against MarinersRighty allowed nine runs his last start; Iwakuma starts for SeattleBy Grace Raynor / MLB.com | 5/29/2014 9:39 PM ETJustin Verlander knows what happened the last time he took the mound. He knows that in his last start, on Sunday against the Rangers, nothing went right. In fact, almost everything went wrong. Verlander struggled mightily, giving up a career-high nine runs (six earned) along with 11 hits, while only striking out one in 5 1/3 innings. He'll look to redeem himself when the Tigers travel to Seattle to play the Mariners on Friday, as a seven-game road trip continues after an unpredictable series against the A's. "We've seen a lot in the past 10 days," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said on Thursday. "Just when you think you know the game of baseball, you're reminded you don't know the game of baseball. It's been a rollercoaster ride in Oakland for us." Verlander is 9-8 with a 3.38 ERA against the Mariners, and he is 4-5 with a 4.23 ERA in Seattle. Against Seattle last year, he was 0-2. Verlander said the struggles are normal in such a long season. "Everything's magnified when you're going through a rough stretch, but it's a rough stretch," said Verlander after the loss to the Rangers. "It happens in the game of baseball. I wasn't able to do the job [Sunday] but … even great ballclubs go through rough stretches throughout the course of 162 games; it happens." Verlander, as well as Ausmus said that the feeling in the clubhouse has become more positive through the stretch, and that everyone is still confident in their abilities. "The mood has been good all along in the clubhouse," Ausmus said. "This pitching staff is extremely good. Their resume speaks for themselves." Tigers: Not much experience against IwakumaTigers hitters have limited experience against Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who pitched 14 scoreless innings over two starts against them last year and allowed a run over three innings in a relief appearance in 2012. Ian Kinsler, who was with the Texas Rangers before this season, is 8-for-20 against Iwakuma, with three homers, two walks and a hit by pitch. No one else on the Tigers has more than two hits against Iwakuma. Worth noting• Robinson Cano is 9-for-39 (.231) with two RBIs vs. Verlander. John Buck and Justin Smoak are the only current Mariners to hit homers vs. Verlander, and they have two each. Grace Raynor is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
