| GDT: 9/26/11 - DET (92-67) VS CLE (80-79) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- VS --- Detroit Tigers VS Cleveland IndiansMonday, September 26 Comerica Park, Detroit, MI Game Time - 7:05 p.m. EDT REMEMBERING SPARKYThe Tigers are wearing a patch on their right sleeves this season in the shape of a home plate emblazoned with the name SPARKY, to honor Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson who passed away on November 4, 2010. Anderson’s number 11 was retired in a pre-game ceremony on June 26. ______________________________________ Preview Tigers host Tribe in final series before playoffsFister set to battle Jimenez in opener at Comerica Park By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com | 9/25/2011 7:03 PM ETOne more series. The Tigers and Indians will meet for their final series of the season starting Monday, a set that celebrates Cleveland's resurgence and serves to prepare Detroit for the playoffs. The Tigers will send Doug Fister to the mound, and he'll be matched against Ubaldo Jimenez. Detroit, champions of the American League Central for the first time, will go into the Cleveland series with a healthy dose of momentum. The Tigers, who have won 27 of their last 36 games, will advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2006, and the 13th time in franchise history. "One thing I like about our team, we've been able to just roll with the punches," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland of his team's composure down the stretch. "I like the way our guys are handling it. Don't get all excited about who we're playing, where we're going, are we staying? We're just going about our business. And I kind of like that. I think that's the way you have to look at those things." Fister, acquired from Seattle the day before the non-waiver Trade Deadline, has been a huge part of Detroit's run over the last two months. The right-hander is 7-1 with a 2.02 ERA in 10 appearances with the Tigers, and he's struck out 48 batters against just five walks in that span. The Indians will counter with Jimenez, who was expected to help spearhead their run at the division title. Cleveland sputtered after adding the right-hander, though, and is now playing to finish with a winning record for the first time since last winning the AL Central in 2007. Detroit grabbed control of the division shortly after the All-Star break, and the Tigers have lengthened their lead even as several other races grow tighter around them. "Right now, probably, is one of the most chaotic times in the history of baseball, with everything involved," said Leyland. "You have the Angels, you've got Tampa, you've got Boston, you've got St. Louis, you've got Atlanta. It's unbelievable right now what's going on. It's one of those years when you use the old phrase, 'I don't know if I'm coming or going.' It's pretty true this year." Indians: Jimenez finding grooveJimenez has posted a higher ERA (4.62) in his 10-start tenure with Cleveland than he did in 21 outings with Colorado (4.46). The 27-year-old has steadied himself of late, though, completing at least six innings in each of his last six starts. Jimenez has gone 3-2 with a 3.20 ERA in that span, and he's held opposing hitters to a .201 batting average and a .290 on-base percentage. The Indians are hoping he can finish strong against Detroit and report to Spring Training ready to take on AL hitters from Day 1. Tigers: Betemit expected backThe Tigers expect to get veteran infielder Wilson Betemit back in the lineup for Monday's game. Betemit, who's hitting .281 with seven homers and 45 RBIs in 95 games this season, has been out since tweaking his knee in a play at home plate on September 16. Acquired from Kansas City in July, Betemit has played in 38 games for Detroit. He's only lined up at third base for the Tigers, but he also played first and second with the Royals prior to the trade. Betemit has played in the postseason three times, twice for Atlanta and once for the Dodgers. Worth noting• The Tigers hadn't won a division title since finishing first in the AL East in 1987. Detroit has won a division title four times since divisional play began in 1969. • Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello will start for Detroit over the final two days of the season. Cleveland will counter with Jeanmar Gomez and Zach McAllister. • The Indians are 36-33 against division rivals this season. ______________________________________
Pitching matchup
Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (7-1, 2.02 ERA)Fister's start allows him to start Game 2 of the AL Division Series on his normal rest, as Jim Leyland revealed Thursday. He's 7-1 with a 2.02 ERA in 10 games as a Tiger, making him Detroit's best starter not named Verlander. Indians: RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-3, 4.62 ERA)Jimenez is 3-2 with a 3.20 ERA over his past six starts after allowing four runs in seven innings in an 8-4 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday. The outing snapped a streak of five straight quality starts by the right-hander. ______________________________________
