| GDT: 9/13/11 - DET (85-62) AT CWS (73-73) - 8:10 p.m. ET --- AT --- Detroit Tigers AT Chicago White SoxTuesday, September 13, 2011 U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL Game Time - 8:10 p.m. EDT REMEMBERING SPARKYThe Tigers are wearing a patch on their right sleeves this season in the shape of a home plate emblazoned with the name SPARKY, to honor Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson who passed away on November 4, 2010. Anderson’s number 11 was retired in a pre-game ceremony on June 26. ______________________________________ Preview Verlander seeks win No. 23, Tigers' 11th straightBy Quinn Roberts / MLB.com | 9/13/2011 12:02 AM ET Already accomplishing so much with 22 wins this season, Justin Verlander could join some illustrious company on Tuesday against the White Sox if he can get win No. 23 under his belt. Not only does the Tigers' hard throwing right-hander lead the Majors in wins, but he's won 10 straight starts, a span that reaches all the way back to July 15.
If he can get that 11th straight victory at U.S. Cellular Field, he would tie the longest streak by a Tiger since Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser did it in 1946.
Against the Indians on Wednesday, Verlander worked for his win. Surrendering four runs on three hits in six innings, the righty tossed 113 pitches and got help from a Detroit offense that scored eight runs in the victory. "Everybody else sees Justin and thinks every time he's going to pitch, he's going to throw a perfect game," catcher Alex Avila said. "We're a little bit more in touch with reality sometimes, knowing how long a season can be. There's a reason why it's a team game." Just as Verlander is streaking, so are the Tigers. Beating the White Sox, 14-4, on Monday, the Tigers have won 10 straight. The club's longest winning streak since an 11-game run in 1968 has put Detroit's magic number for clinching the AL Central title at six.White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd will have the daunting task of not only matching Verlander, but stopping the surging Tigers. While that may have been a tough task for Floyd a month ago, the right-hander has turned things around during his last six starts. In that time, he's gone 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA. On Thursday against the Indians, the right-hander tossed 5 2/3 innings, giving up only one run on five hits, but was left with no decision. Tigers; V-Mart's ability to catch remains in doubtHaving not caught in a game since he sprained his left knee sliding into home plate a month ago in Kansas City, the question remains whether Victor Martinez will catch again before the end of the regular season. After Omir Santos was behind the plate on Sunday to give Alex Avila a day off, Avila was there again for Monday's game against the White Sox. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said on Sunday that Martinez could probably catch if absolutely needed, but they haven't had to try. Until that August sprain, Martinez was serving as Avila's backup. White Sox: Quentin reinstated from DLChicago reinstated outfielder Carlos Quentin from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. Sidelined since Aug. 21 with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, Quentin injured the shoulder while making a diving catch on Aug. 20 in a 3-2 win over the Rangers. The 29-year-old outfielder is hitting .254 with 24 home runs and 77 RBIs in 118 games this season. Worth noting• The Tigers have won 19 of their last 25 games over the White Sox dating back to Aug. 14, 2010. In that time, they have scored 164 runs and have 48 doubles and 32 home runs.• White Sox pitchers have registered at least 10 strikeouts in three of their last five games and eight of 17. ______________________________________
Pitching matchup
Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (22-5, 2.44 ERA)Verlander has won 10 straight starts since the White Sox beat him in mid-July, the longest streak by a Tiger since Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser won 11 straight in 1946. White Sox: RHP Gavin Floyd (12-10, 4.35 ERA)Since giving up 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings in his worst outing of the season on Aug. 3 against the Yankees, Floyd has gone 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA in his last six starts. ______________________________________
