Tigers have work cut out for them vs. Royals

By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com | 8/29/2011 10:57 PM ET

They reside at opposite ends of the American League Central standings, but that doesn't mean the Tigers haven't taken notice of the youth movement in Kansas City. The Royals are playing at close to the same winning percentage as last season, but they're doing it in a different way.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland said Monday that he's been impressed with the Kansas City youth movement, a deep assembly of talent that he'll have to counter again on Tuesday.

"KC is a tremendously dangerous team," Leyland said. "They've gotten more athletic. If you look at their averages, they have a lot of guys with a lot of home runs. They're a very good offensive team, they've pitched better, they're very dangerous. Believe me. They've got a lot of nice young players."

The Royals did have their best young talent on display in Monday's series opener, a victory that boasted home runs from Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar. Former first-round draftee Eric Hosmer drove in a run, and second baseman Johnny Giavotella notched three RBIs.

Detroit is still 8-5 against Kansas City this season, and it will match veteran Doug Fister up against left-hander Jeff Francis on Tuesday. Both of those starters have lost at least 13 games this season, but Fister has managed to post a 3-1 record and a 3.45 ERA in his first five starts with Detroit.

"He's a know-how pitcher," said Leyland. "[He puts the ball] over the plate real good, and he's got good stuff. I think sometimes if guys don't throw 95 mph, people think they don't have good stuff. That's not necessarily true. If you throw this when they're looking for that, sometimes you get a strikeout."

Francis, the ninth overall pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, has struggled in his first season as an American League starter. Francis is 3-8 with a 5.58 ERA in 14 road starts, and he's managed to win just three of his past nine decisions. Francis has a 7.09 ERA in five August outings.

Royals: Johnny on the spot
Giavotella, a former second-round draftee, batted .338 for Triple-A Omaha prior to his promotion and has hit safely in 14 of his first 23 games. The 24-year-old has seven extra-base hits in his first month as a big leaguer, but he's drawn just four walks and struck out 14 times in that span.

Tigers: Fister a model of consistency
Fister, acquired along with David Pauley from Seattle in a deal at the non-waiver Trade Deadline, has completed at least seven innings in three of his five starts with his new team. One start was abbreviated by a rain delay, and Fister allowed six earned runs in the other outing.

Fister has been fairly consistent this season, notching an ERA below 4.00 in each of the season's first five months. The right-hander posted identical 3.79 marks in both May and July, and for the year, he's allowed nine homers and held opposing hitters to a .369 slugging percentage.

Worth noting
• Gordon leads the Major Leagues with 20 outfield assists this season. Gordon is just the 24th player since 1969 to reach that total, and he's the first big leaguer since Alfonso Soriano in 2006.

• Kansas City has four players with at least 30 doubles for the first time since the 2003 campaign.

• Detroit veteran Carlos Guillen, sidelined by a wrist ailment, began an injury rehab stint at Triple-A Toledo on Monday.

Pitching matchup

GDT: 8/30/11 - DET (73-61) VS KC (56-79) - 7:05 p.m. ET Ph_450729 Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (6-13, 3.35 ERA)

After going 3-12 as a Mariner with the league's lowest run support, Fister is 3-1 as a Tiger, including seven scoreless innings last Thursday at Tampa Bay. He has 17 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings in his past three starts.

GDT: 8/30/11 - DET (73-61) VS KC (56-79) - 7:05 p.m. ET Ph_433585 Royals: LHP Jeff Francis (5-14, 4.82 ERA)

Rebounding from four subpar starts, Francis worked six shutout innings last Thursday at Toronto before finally giving up two runs in the seventh. His command was good, his pitches were sharp and he kept the Blue Jays guessing.
