Preview Fister on bump as first-place Tigers go for sweepBy Cash Kruth / MLB.com | 8/13/2011 11:59 PM ET
Tigers right-hander Doug Fister and Orioles left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes will each make their third appearance for their new teams in Sunday's series finale.
Fister, acquired from Seattle prior to the non-waiver Trade Deadline, had his last outing in Cleveland cut short because of a two-hour rain delay. He impressed in his Tigers debut on Aug. 3, allowing two earned runs in seven innings against the Rangers to earn his first win while sporting the Old English "D."
"I really liked his demeanor," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "The way he went after the hitters, stayed away from the middle of the plate for the most part. I really liked his presence on the mound."
Reyes, on the other hand, had a rough first start for the Orioles. After throwing a scoreless relief appearance in his Baltimore debut, Reyes lasted only four innings in his start Tuesday against the White Sox.
The short outing has been an all-too-common occurrence for Baltimore starters. Before Jeremy Guthrie tossed 5 2/3 innings Saturday, Alfredo Simon lasted only 4 2/3 innings Friday and Chis Tillman was chased after 2 2/3 frames on Thursday. Reyes said he knows how important it will be for him to pitch relatively deep as the O's try to avert the sweep.
"It's big," Reyes said. "As an offense, our guys are putting up runs, and if we start off good and are able to give the team a chance to win, it's a big key to the bullpen and to winning games."
Going deep against an offense as potent as Detroit's is a challenge Reyes has already experienced this season. While with the Blue Jays, the lefty threw seven innings against Detroit on May 8, giving up five runs on eight hits.
"The whole lineup can hurt you," Reyes said. "They're good one through nine, and you can't give into them and make any mistakes over the plate."
Tigers: Perry up with Alburquerque sidelinedRight-hander Ryan Perry was recalled from Triple-A Toledo prior to Saturday's game to replace Al Alburquerque, who was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion he suffered when getting hit in the head with a line drive during Friday's batting practice. Perry was 3-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 20 games with Toledo, posting seven saves and striking out 30.
Alburquerque was released from the hospital Saturday and will be driven back to Detroit on Sunday.
Orioles: Hardy on fire• J.J. Hardy went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Saturday to snap a streak of seven straight games with an RBI. Despite going hitless, the shortstop is hitting .351 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in his past nine games.
• Orioles relievers have issued only three walks in their past 18 1/3 innings, spanning five games.
Worth noting• Fister, who has won two of his three career starts against Baltimore, beat the Orioles on May 30 while with the Mariners, allowing three runs and striking out a season-high nine in 7 1/3 innings.
• Tigers relievers have an 0.79 ERA and 35 strikeouts in the club's past nine games.
• The Tigers have won eight straight one-run games, the longest such streak in franchise history.
