Preview Tigers' Verlander takes aim at red-hot MetsBy Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 6/30/2011 1:52 AM ET
To Major League hitters who don't don a Detroit uniform, Justin Verlander might be the pitcher they least want to see toe the rubber. The Mets will try their hand against the right-hander, who will attempt Thursday to become the league's first 11-game winner.
Verlander (10-3, 2.38) blanked the Blue Jays on May 7, tossing the second no-hitter of his career. But his best pitching has come lately.
He'll need to continue pitching his best, as he'll be facing a team that has beaten the Tigers by scores of 14-3 and 16-9 in the first two games of their series at Comerica Park. The Mets hit two grand slams on Tuesday, and the 52 runs they've scored since Saturday set a club record for runs in a span of four games.
But the Tigers' ace has won his past six starts, allowing just four earned runs in 49 2/3 innings (0.72 ERA). In that span, he has struck out 51 and walked just six, while holding opposing hitters to a .153 average. In his shortest of the six outings, he threw 7 2/3 innings.
"I feel like I'm throwing the ball really well," Verlander said. "I feel like my fastball control has been outstanding, for the most part, during this stretch. Most of the good games I have are built off of that, being able to locate that, and mixing the offspeed off of that."
Verlander hasn't lost a game since April 27 against the Mariners. He has pitched at least six innings in each of his 17 starts, and has lasted eight or nine frames in 10 of them.
Verlander has set a new season-best in strikeouts in three of his past four appearances. Against the Mariners on June 9, he fanned 10. Five days later, he mystified 12 Indians hitters. In his last start, Saturday against the D-backs, he punched out a career-high 14.
"You just don't see stuff like that," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after Saturday's game. "I think one of their guys remarked to [third-base coach Gene Lamont], 'If you get a pitch from him to hit, you'd better hit it.'"
In his only career start against the Mets, Verlander surrendered five runs on five hits, walking three and striking out two, while lasting just two innings on June 22, 2010.
Tigers: Pondering early departuresTeams often send a pitcher home early during a night game if he's scheduled to start the next afternoon. Detroit faced such a scenario Wednesday night, with Verlander primed to man the mound Thursday afternoon. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he hasn't determined the exact science about what to do with his starting pitchers in that situation.
"There's all kinds of theories about stuff," Leyland said. "I don't really know the answers. ... I've seen it both ways. I've seen guys get two-hit shutouts. I've seen guys not get out of the first inning."
Mets: Bay trending upwardOutfielder Jason Bay has been showing signs of busting out of his season-long slump. In his past 12 games, Bay has hit .327 with two homers and 10 RBIs, raising his average from .207 to .236.
"When you're the kind of player Jason Bay is, you expect a lot out of yourself," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Those kind of guys, what drives them is they're really never satisfied."
Worth noting• Despite surrendering just nine runs in 28 innings (2.89 ERA), New York's Mike Pelfrey is 1-2 in his past four starts. Scheduled to start Thursday, Pelfrey has walked just two and struck out 16 in that span, holding opposing hitters to a .206 average. Overall, Pelfrey is 4-6 with a 4.78 ERA. He has never faced the Tigers.
•
Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta has hit .459 (11-for-24) in his past six games, raising his average to .313. The highest Peralta has ever hit in any Major League season is .292 in 2005 with the Indians. ______________________________________
Pitching matchup
Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (10-3, 2.38 ERA)Verlander has had dominant stretches in past years, but nothing like this. He's 6-0 with a 0.72 ERA in his last six starts, and 8-0 with a 1.56 ERA in his last 10. Those last six starts include just 26 hits over 49 2/3 innings.
Mets: RHP Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 4.78 ERA)A three-run Rangers rally in the first inning last Friday sunk Pelfrey, who allowed 10 hits and broke his string of three consecutive quality starts. He'll head back to a pitcher's park to face the Tigers, a team he has never pitched against.
