| GDT: 6/29/11 - DET (43-37) VS NYM (40-39) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- VS --- Detroit Tigers VS New York MetsWednesday, June 29, 2011 Comerica Park, Detroit, MI Game Time - 7:05 p.m. EDT REMEMBERING SPARKYThe Tigers are wearing a patch on their right sleeves this season in the shape of a home plate emblazoned with the name SPARKY, to honor Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson who passed away on November 4, 2010. ______________________________________ Preview Mets stack up against Tigers, try to make Coke fizzleBy Aaron Taube / MLB.com | 6/28/2011 10:57 PM ET It seems every night a different player is coming up with a big hit for the Tigers, who host the Mets on Wednesday for the second game of a three-game series. Though three teams in the American League have scored more runs than the Tigers this season, as of Tuesday none of them had more .300 hitters than Detroit's five. The depth throughout the lineup has given manager Jim Leyland plenty of flexibility with a Tigers team that is third in the Majors in batting average. "This has been one of my most fun seasons, because I think we can plug guys in that can do a pretty good job," Leyland said. "I think we have pretty good versatility. I could play [Brennan] Boesch and [Andy] Dirks, [Casper] Wells, [Ramon] Santiago. It's kind of been fun." The Tigers' lineup has helped carry the load for a pitching staff that is 11th in the American League in ERA. Wednesday, Detroit will start Phil Coke (1-7, 4.32 ERA), who blew a four-run lead against the D-backs in his last time out. Coke, who is second among Detroit starters in ERA, but last in innings pitched, will look to rebound against the Mets. Coke will have his hands full against a surging Mets lineup that has scored 36 runs in its past three games. In the fourth inning of Tuesday's 14-3 Mets win, Jason Bay hit the Mets' first grand slam since August 1, 2009. In that timespan, Mets opponents had hit 18 grand slams of their own. Carlos Beltran followed with another grand slam one inning later. The Mets will attempt to extend their three-game winning streak with starter Chris Capuano (6-7, 3.99 ERA). Capuano left his previous start with abdominal cramps after six scoreless innings, but is expected to be fine for Wednesday. Mets: Jose Reyes rolling toward historyTuesday was Mets shortstop Jose Reyes' 1,000th game. In it, he went 4-for-4, hitting his 98th career triple and stealing his 360th career stolen base. The only other player with that many triples and steals in his first 1,000 games was Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, who had 106 triples and 391 stolen bases by his 1,000th game in 1912. "He's a Hall of Famer," Reyes said. "That's pretty good." Tigers: Interleague success storyDespite Tuesday's loss, the Tigers hold an impressive 68-35 record in Interleague Play since 2006, good for a .660 winning percentage. Going into Tuesday, the Tigers had the Major Leagues' second-best Interleague winning percentage during that span, behind Boston. Worth noting• The Mets' win Tuesday put them above the .500 mark for the first time since being 3-2 on April 6. Since then, the Mets had been at .500 four times before Tuesday, but lost each time they had the opportunity to go one game over. • The 14 runs allowed Tuesday tied the most the Tigers have given up this season, with the seven runs they allowed in the fourth inning the most they had given up in one inning all year. ______________________________________
Pitching matchup
Tigers: LHP Phil Coke (1-7, 4.32 ERA)Coke is winless in 11 starts since April 14, and his frustration is building after blowing a four-run lead in a no-decision Friday against Arizona without allowing an extra-base hit. He said afterward he was "ashamed." Mets: LHP Chris Capuano (6-7, 3.99 ERA)Capuano remains in line to make his next start despite leaving his last one after six innings with cramps in his right side. Barring a setback, Capuano will take the mound against a Tigers team he has faced just once in his career, back in 2006. ______________________________________
