LAKELAND | The Florida State League season is just one day old and already Lakeland has a good omen.

The Flying Tigers roared out to a 7-1 lead and held on to defeat the two-time defending FSL Champion Tampa Yankees, 7-5, in Lakeland's home opener Thursday night.

Drew Smyly named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week

Lakeland Flying Tiger Starting Pitcher Drew Smyly was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week by the Florida State League (FSL) today. The selection was for the period of June 6-12.

Smyly started one game on June 8 at the first-place Daytona Cubs. In seven innings pitched he did not allow a hit. He issued three walks, and struck out seven batters in the Flying Tigers 4-0 victory. It was Smyly's second professional win.

This is Smyly's first professional season. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2nd round of the June 2010 draft out the University of Arkansas.

Dave Huppert … began managing in the minors in 1986 for the Milwaukee Brewers Helena team in the Pioneer League … Lakeland is his fourth managerial job in the Florida State League … coached the 1993 Sarasota White Sox, 1999-2001 Brevard County Manatees (Marlins) and the 2007 Clearwater Threshers (Phillies) … led 2001 Manatees to League Co-Championships and 2007 Threshers to FSL crown … also managed the Lakewood Blue Claws (Phillies) to South Atlantic League title in 2006 … managed the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in 2010 … two-time Minor League Manager of the Year … 2010 was be his 23rd season as a minor league maneger … has a 1,608-1,461 career record … played ten seasons in the minors as a catcher …. was the Rochester catcher for 31 of the 33 innings against Pawtuckett in professional baseball’s longest game on April 18, 1981 … played in 17 games in the major leagues – two for Baltimore in 1983 and 15 for Milwaukee in 1985 with a combined 21 at bats … his one major league hit came off of Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro … was third base coach for the Washington Nationals in their inaugural season of 2005 … will turn 54 on April 17.

• William Bergolla (2B) – signed by Detroit in 2011 as a minor league free agent … signed as a non-drafted free agent by Cincinnati in 1999 … played in 17 games for Cincinnati in 2005 … has a .285 average in 833 minor league games over nine season … selected to 2005 Futures Games … named to 2004 Southern League Post-Season All-Star Team.

• Tony Plagman (1B) – 9th round pick by Detroit in 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech … drafted by Yankees in 2009, but did not sign … batted .272 with 19 doubles and 5 HR in 63 games at West Michigan last season.

Jordan Lennerton (1B) – 33rd round pick by Detroit in 2008 draft out of Oregon State … also drafted by Milwaukee (2005) and Toronto (2004) … split 2010 season between West Michigan and Lakeland in 2010 … batted .301 with 15 doubles and tied for the team lead with 9 HR for Lakeland in 2010 … also played in Lakeland in 2008.


Gustavo Nunez (SS) – Signed as a non-drafted free agent by Detroit in 2007 … named to 2010 FSL Mid-Season All-Star Team … also played in Lakeland in 2008 … led 2010 Flying Tigers with 116 hits … first player to lead Lakeland in hits and return the following season since Jim Walewander in 1985 and 1986 … lead the FSL in assists (388) while leading all league shortstops in games played at the position (123), total chances (628), putouts (214), and most double plays (76) … omitted just 26 errors for a .959 fielding mark.


Shawn Roof (2B) – 33rd round draft pick by Detroit in 2007 out of Univ. of Illinois … son of Tigers’ Minor League roving instructor Gene Roof and brother of fellow Flying Tiger, Eric Roof … began 2010 season with Erie and batted .223 in 64 games … played 25 games for Toledo where he hit .354 in 2010 … playing for the fourth time in Lakeland.

Avisail Garcia – Signed as a non-drafted free agent by Detroit in 2007 … batted .281 in 125 games at West Michigan in 2010 … led White Caps with 139 hits and 20 stolen bases … played three games for Lakeland in 2009.


Brent Wyatt – 26th round pick by Detroit in 2008 out of Lewis & Clark State College … batted .258 with a team-leading 18 doubles, along with 5 HR and 16 stolen bases for Lakeland in 2010 … hit one of two Lakeland grand slams in 2010 … also played in 16 games at Erie.

• Kenny Faulk (LHP) – 16th round pick in 2009 out of Kennesaw State University … named to 2009 New York-Penn Mid-Season All-Star Team … was 5-4 with a 2.16 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 58.1 innings in 49 relief appearances in 2010 at West Michigan … led Whitecaps with 12 saves in 15 save opportunities.

• Victor Larez (RHP) – signed as a non-drafted free agent by Detroit in 2005 … played in the VSL in 2006 and 2007, 2008 in the GCL and 2009 and 2010 at West Michigan … has an 8-11 career record and a 4.27 ERA in 33 appearances in five seasons.

Cole Nelson (LHP) – 10th round pick by Detroit in 2010 out of Auburn … was 1-0 with a 0.59 ERA in seven games for GCL Tigers and 0-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two starts in Lakeland … tossed 7.0 no-hit innings in start in Lakeland’s 13-1 “no-hitter” against Dunedin on Sept. 1, 2010 …. 6-foot-7
