| GDT: 9/11/10 - DET (71-71) VS BAL (54-87) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- VS --- Detroit Tigers VS Baltimore OriolesSaturday, September 11, 2010Comerica Park, Detroit, MIGame Time - 7:05 p.m. EDTThis season dedicated to the late, great Ernie Harwell. ______________________________________ O's Guthrie faces Scherzer in surprise duelBy Tim Britton / MLB.com At first glance, a matchup between pitchers who have combined for 22 losses this season doesn't seem like much of a showdown. But if you look more closely, Jeremy Guthrie and Max Scherzer have been two of the American League's best hurlers since the All-Star break. Guthrie has helped spearhead the Orioles' resurgence under manager Buck Showalter, with six wins in his 10 starts since the break. His 2.51 ERA over that span is good for ninth in the league among starters. Throw out a pair of rough outings in mid-August, in which he allowed 11 earned runs to the Mariners and White Sox, and Guthrie has been nothing short of outstanding over the last two months. In his other eight starts since the Midsummer Classic, Guthrie is 6-1 with a 1.42 ERA. The right-hander, who was just 3-10 in the season's first half, tossed a season-high 117 pitches in his last outing on Saturday against Tampa Bay. But he said he's feeling fine heading down the stretch of the season, perhaps because he's pitching on a hot team. "There's a little more adrenaline," Guthrie said. "Hopefully we can finish on a strong note and get ready for next season." As good as Guthrie has been, Scherzer has been even better for the Tigers, appearing to fulfill his vast potential. Before allowing four earned runs in his last start against the White Sox, Scherzer had gone seven straight starts giving up two or fewer earned runs. In his last 10 starts, Scherzer has posted a 4-2 record and a 1.79 ERA. The only problem? Detroit is only 4-6 in those 10 games. That includes losses in the past two games Scherzer has started, despite the fact that he left each game with it tied. Scherzer's improvement really stretches all the way back to early June. In his past 17 starts, he is 8-4 with a 2.09 ERA, and he has allowed three or fewer runs in all but two of those starts. Orioles: Fox makes push for playing timeJake Fox hit his fifth home run in 29 games with the Orioles on Friday, a two-run shot in the fifth. Fox, who entered the game 4-for-4 with a homer off of Tigers starter Armando Galarraga, went 1-for-3 off Galarraga on Friday. It was Fox's first start since Aug. 28. "It's frustrating," Fox said of his lack of playing time. "Being a competitor, you want to get in there and show them what you can do, especially under new management. You understand when you get brought into an organization they have a list of guys that they have to get a look at first. I think they brought me here because they liked the way I played, and they liked the way I hit." Tigers: Raburn shining in everyday roleJust over a month ago, Ryan Raburn's batting average flirted perilously with the Mendoza Line at .209. But with a hot streak that has now spanned 33 games, the outfielder has lifted his average all the way up to .268. Raburn has batted an even .350 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in his past 26 starts for Detroit, providing a middle-of-the-order presence beside Miguel Cabrera. Raburn credits the security of being in the everyday lineup. "Lately it's been really nice. It's a lot easier to play when you know you are going to be in there the next day," Raburn said. "You can put at-bats behind you and take them into the next day and see what happens. But when you don't know when you are playing -- and if you go 0-for-4 -- you don't know when your next chance is going to be to make up for it." Worth notingGuthrie earned the Orioles' nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. ... With his walk in the fifth inning, Brian Roberts has now reached base in 21 straight games for Baltimore. Roberts is hitting .305 in that span with a .376 on-base percentage. ... Detroit had won five consecutive home games against Baltimore before Friday's 6-3 loss. ______________________________________ Pitching matchupTIGERS: RHP Max Scherzer (10-9, 3.51 ERA)The White Sox cooled off what had arguably been the AL's hottest starter Monday, but Scherzer's 7 1/3 innings with four runs allowed got no decision. He had allowed seven earned runs in 50 1/3 innings over his previous seven starts. ORIOLES: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (9-13, 3.89 ERA)Guthrie has emerged as the unquestionable ace of the staff, and he had another strong outing on Saturday, tossing seven innings of two-run baseball. Guthrie settled down after a leadoff homer to pick up his second consecutive win. ______________________________________
Tiger's MLB Game Notes RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers suffered a 6-3 loss to the Orioles last night at Comerica Park. Phil Coke (7-5) took the loss in relief for Detroit after allowing two runs. Miguel Cabrera finished with a double, home run and three RBI to lead the Tigers, while Austin Jackson added three hits. The Tigers continue a seven-game homestand with the second game of a three-game series against Baltimore this evening at Comerica Park. Following an off day on Monday, the club hits the road to a five-game trip to Texas and Chicago. ROOKIE HIT PARADE: Tigers rookie hitters collected three hits last night against the Orioles, raising the season total to 446 hits by Tigers rookies. The 446 hits by rookies are the most by Tigers rookies since the rookies on the 1954 club posted 477 hits. Tigers rookies collected 590 hits in 1929 to establish the franchise record. (Source: STATS LLC) PERALTA PICKING UP THE PRODUCTION: Jhonny Peralta collected a single last night against the Orioles and he has now hit safely in 17 of his last 21 games dating back to August 19. He is batting .354 (28x79) with four doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI during the 21-game stretch. Peralta is third among all American League players with 19 RBI during the stretch, while he is fifth with a .354 batting average. JACKSON’S THREE-HIT MAGIC: Austin Jackson collected three hits last night versus Baltimore, marking his 15th game with three-or-more hits this season. His 15 games with three-or-more hits are the most by a Tigers rookie since Ricky Peters also posted 15 such games in 1980. Harvey Kuenn finished with 21 games of three-or-more hits as a rookie in 1953, the last Tigers rookie with more than 15 such games. RABURN ON A ROLL: Ryan Raburn enters tonight’s game versus the Orioles hitting .350 (43x123) with nine doubles, 10 home runs and 27 RBI over his last 33 games dating back to August 5. He is second among all American League players with 27 RBI during the stretch, while he is tied for second with 19 extra-base hits, is third with 10 home runs and a .667 slugging percentage, fourth with a .350 batting average and 43 hits and tied for fourth with nine doubles. JACKSON PILING UP THE RUNS: Austin Jackson has scored 24 runs over his last 21 games dating back to August 20 and he leads all American League rookies with 93 runs scored this season. His 93 runs scored mark the most by a Tigers rookie since Jake Wood scored 96 runs during the 1961 season. With seven more runs scored, Jackson will become just the sixth rookie in Tigers history to score at least 100 runs and the first since Barney McCosky scored 120 runs in 1939. INGE CLOSING IN ON 200 DOUBLES: Brandon Inge enters tonight’s game against the Orioles one double shy of 200 during his major league career. With one more double he would become the 26th player in franchise history to collect 200 doubles.
