| GDT: 8/29/10 - DET (64-66) AT TOR (68-61) - 1:07 p.m. ET --- AT --- Detroit Tigers AT Toronto Blue JaysSunday, August 29, 2010Rogers Centre, Toronto, OntarioGame Time - 1:07 p.m. EDTThis season dedicated to the late, great Ernie Harwell. ______________________________________ Porcello to battle Rzepczynski in finale By Bailey Stephens / MLB.comRick Porcello's had quite the journey since the first time he stepped on the mound at Rogers Centre in April 2009. On Sunday, when the Tigers wrap up a four-game series in Toronto, Porcello returns to the scene of his Major League debut, looking to find the consistent success he enjoyed in his first season. Porcello has endured an up-and-down campaign in 2010 while transitioning from a sinkerball pitcher to one who relies on multiple pitches to get hitters out. After several rocky starts, he began to show signs that his new approach was working in his last start against the Royals, in which he tossed seven shutout innings. "I threw all my pitches for strikes -- my four-seam fastball, my sinker, slider, curveball, changeup," Porcello said. "At any given point, they were a pitch I could get somebody out with. And I think when you've got a couple pitches going like that, it's a lot harder for a hitter to sit on one pitch." With the new approach, Porcello is gunning to finish strong down the stretch and return to the form that saw him win 14 games as a rookie. The pitcher Porcello will oppose on Sunday, Jays hurler Marc Rzepczynski, knows a thing or two about adjustments, having worked both out of the bullpen and as a starter. The left-hander stumbled in his last start, though, lasting just three innings against the Yankees. "It was one of those days," Rzepczynski said. "You make mistakes against [that] team, [if you] leave balls in the middle, they're going to go a long way." Rzepczynski will have his work cut out for him against Miguel Cabrera, never an easy out. And Cabrera has been a terror at the plate during day games of late. Including a home run on Saturday, Cabrera is batting .333 with 15 doubles, 16 homers and 60 RBIs in 54 day games this season. His home run and RBI totals lead all American League players during the day. Tigers: Timely hits eluding DetroitThe Tigers' struggles with runners in scoring position frustrated their offense on Friday night, and Saturday was more of the same. After going 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position on Friday, Detroit went 1-for-9 in Saturday's loss, including a ninth-inning bases-loaded situation. Before Saturday's game, manager Jim Leyland expressed frustration with the offense's lack of execution. "You can't go up there with runners in scoring position and not get a swing off," Leyland said. "You just can't do it. ... Guy on second, nobody out, hit a little pop to the shortstop -- you can't do that if you want to win. I realize it's hard; I'm not being critical of them. I'm just saying you can't miss those opportunities and win games. Not up here." Blue Jays: Overbay's status for Sunday uncertainAfter leaving Friday night's contest early with an illness, first baseman Lyle Overbay stayed home during Saturday's win over the Tigers at the club's request. His status for Sunday wasn't known, nor did the club have a good idea of what was ailing the veteran. "He's still not feeling well," manager Cito Gaston said. "We're not quite sure what it is right now." In the meantime, the club will use this opportunity to see more from Adam Lind, who is in the mix to fill the position in 2011. Lind responded on Saturday, turning in a 2-for-4 effort. Worth notingThe Jays have won eight of their past 12 games at home. ... Vernon Wells is four hits shy of 1,500 for his career. ... Detroit has now blasted a home run in each of its last 10 road games. ... After Toronto's win on Saturday, Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow is now 8-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his past 12 starts at home. ______________________________________ Pitching matchup TIGERS: RHP Rick Porcello (6-11, 5.43 ERA)Porcello returns to the place where he made his first Major League start in April 2009, now looking continue the adjustments he's been making to go from a pure sinkerballer to someone who can attack hitters with four or five different pitches. BLUE JAYS: LHP Marc Rzepczynski (1-2, 6.31 ERA)Rzepcznyski labored in his last start, lasting just three innings in a loss at home against the Yankees. The left-hander yielded six runs on eight hits, including three home runs, and ended with two walks and one strikeout in the 68-pitch effort. ______________________________________
