Galarraga gets call for Tigers vs. White Sox

By Rhett Bollinger / MLB.com

All eyes will be on Tigers right-hander Armando Galarraga on Tuesday, when the Tigers and White Sox begin a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

After all, it will mark Galarraga's first start since his "imperfect" game last Wednesday, when he saw his bid for perfection end with two out in the ninth inning on a blown call by first-base umpire Jim Joyce. The ump called the Indians' Jason Donald safe at first, even though replays showed he was out.

It's been a wild ride since then for Galarraga and the Tigers with plenty of media attention, but it's also time to turn the page on that historic outing, according to veteran manager Jim Leyland.

"You have to move on," Leyland said. "The next day, you learn how to get back in the fight. That's just the way it is, and if you can't do that, then you can't manage here. You can't chew yesterday's breakfast."

But Leyland also made sure to point out how well it was all handled by Galarraga, Joyce and Tigers fans, who were all classy in the face of a tough situation. It was especially evident the following day, when a tearful Joyce exchanged lineup cards with Galarraga before Detroit's game with the Indians.

"I was so proud of the Detroit fans," Leyland said. "It was absolutely tremendous. I'm very proud of Galarraga. ... It was handled good by everybody, and I'm glad it's over. I'm not even thinking about it today. The best part of the whole deal was that we won some games."

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, meanwhile, has already gone on the record saying that Galarraga won't be throwing a perfect game against his club. But Guillen also said he's looking forward to speaking with the fellow Venezuelan.

"I might talk to him after the game," Guillen said. "He's throwing the ball better. Last year, he struggled.

"There's going to be a lot of attention coming after that game. We are going to approach the same way we approached him in the past, and we had pretty good success against him in the past."

Guillen's club has fared well against Galarraga historically, as the right-hander is 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA in five career outings against Chicago.

The White Sox will counter with right-hander Gavin Floyd, who unlike Galarraga, has had some success against his opponent with a 5-0 record and a 3.34 ERA against the Tigers in 12 career starts.

But Floyd has struggled this year, posting a 2-6 record and 6.64 ERA, and is coming off one of the worst starts of his career, when he allowed six runs on eight hits over just 2 2/3 innings against the Rangers last Wednesday.

"I think that was one of those where you just try to learn from it," Floyd said of his last start. "I had two good outings before, hopefully I can put this behind me."

Tigers: Catching carousel in Motown

Catchers Gerald Laird and Alex Avila have split the load this season with Laird making 33 starts to Avila's 23, and it will continue to be that way moving forward, according to Leyland. "I'm going to play [Avila] more but I'm not going to forget about Gerald Laird in any way, shape or form," the skipper said. "I spoke with Gerald before [Saturday's] game and told him I was going to try and play Alex a little bit more but I'm not forgetting about him."

White Sox: Pierzynski eyes 10-and-5
Catcher A.J. Pierzynski has an important milestone looming on June 14 when he officially earns 10-and-5 status, which gives him a no-trade clause because he has played at least 10 years in the Majors and at least five straight with the same team. Pierzynski acknowledged he could be traded before that deadline, but also said he would consider consenting a trade after it. "Obviously, if the White Sox aren't where we want to be and a team has a chance for the playoffs and to win the World Series and they come and say, 'Hey, we need a catcher,' it would be hard to say no to that," Pierzynski said. "How would you go about that? That's something [where] my love for Chicago and this organization would be a deciding factor, but it's hard as a player to say no."

Worth noting
Both the Tigers and White Sox have Monday off.

... Tuesday's opener will mark just their second meeting so far this season, as the White Sox beat the Tigers, 6-2, on May 18 after their scheduled opener of a two-game series on May 17 was rained out at Comerica Park. The rainout was rescheduled for Tuesday, August 3, as part of a day-night doubleheader in Detroit.

Pitching matchup

DET: RHP Armando Galarraga (2-1, 2.57 ERA)
Hard to believe now, but there had been speculation that Galarraga would be skipped in the Tigers' rotation here with the team off on Monday. Of course, that speculation was before Galarraga's would-be perfect game last Wednesday, when only an errant call from first-base umpire Jim Joyce kept Galarraga from becoming the first Tiger ever to achieve perfection. Tuesday will mark Galarraga's first start since that amazing outing and the incredible sympathy he showed afterwards towards Joyce. He might never pitch anywhere near that well again, but if he can find that same nasty sinker and slider, he'll have a chance to pitch effectively and give the Tigers a chance at a victory.

White Sox: RHP Gavin Floyd (2-6, 6.64 ERA)
Floyd had pitched well going into his last start, against the Texas Rangers, but 2 2/3 innings later, he had been chased after allowing eight hits and six runs after just 19 batters. Of the eight hits he surrendered, five were extra-base hits, including four doubles. After the game, White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen said, "Maybe the first year in his career here, but I don't think I've ever seen him this bad. Bouncing balls, getting hit hard. That's the first time I've seen him pitching this way. This kid, every time he is in there, we believe we have a chance. Nothing was working with him. I tried to stay with him as long as I can, because our bullpen is very thin, and I couldn't." Floyd is undefeated against the Tigers, with five wins over no losses, and a 3.34 ERA.
