| Barry Bonds indicted on perjury, obstruction charges By PAUL ELIAS, Associated Press Writer November 15, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday for perjury and obstruction of justice, charged with lying when he told a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.
The indictment unsealed Thursday against baseball's home-run king culminated a four-year investigation into steroid use by elite athletes.
"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment read.
In August, the 43-year-old Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader. Late in the season, the San Francisco Giants told the seven-time National League MVP they didn't want him back next year. He is currently a free agent.
While Bonds was chasing Aaron, the grand jury was working behind closed doors to complete the long-rumored indictment.
"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."
The indictment charged Bonds with lying when he said that he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson. He also denied taking steroids at anytime in 2001 when he was pursuing the season home-run record.
He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.
"Greg wouldn't do that," Bonds testified in December 2003 when asked if Anderson ever gave him any drugs that needed to be injected. "He knows I'm against that stuff."

| Why does everything happen when I'm in class?
Well, it's about time! Bond's record is tainted, his stats should be removed from the books and he should be banned from baseball for life, including the HOF! Barry Bonds is a disgrace to baseball!

| I guess it was just his whole attitude, not only toward reporters, fellow teammates, and fans, but toward the game itself. Leaving in the 3rd inning that last time made me see red. | |

| People make such a big deal out of steroids. Steroids aren't bad. I mean, ponder this:
Anyone here ever use hydrocortisone cream? Well guess what, hydrocortisone is derived from cortisol, a steroid!
Now I doubt athletes are using this particular cream to enhance their performance (unless they have rashes that are hindering them) you get the idea.

| Bonds faces 10 additional counts Federal prosecutors rework indictment at judge's order By Tom Singer / MLB.com
Federal prosecutors' amendment of their case against Barry Bonds resulted Tuesday in the perjury charges against baseball's all-time home run king increasing from four counts to 14.
However, the additional 10 counts filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco do not represent new alleged instances of Bonds lying to a federal grant jury regarding his use of performance-enhancing substances.
Rather, the new indictments reflect adherence to direction from U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, who on Feb. 29 ordered prosecutors to rework their case.
Conforming to the order, each charge in the indictment now alleges one lie; previously, several alleged lies had been rolled into single counts. Illston had handed down the order in response to a motion by Bonds' defense calling the initial indictment possibly vague and ambiguous.
As before, the indictments also include one count of obstruction, addressing Bonds' denial of knowingly having used performance-enhancing drugs.
The federal case against Bonds remains fundamentally unchanged, focused on his grand jury testimony of personal trainer Greg Anderson never having supplied him with steroids and human growth hormone.
Bonds' original indictment on the four perjury counts and one count of obstruction was handed down in November. The case deals with his testimony in front of the grand jury in 2003.
The next hearing in the case is set for June 6.
