Hot-hitting Morneau takes show to Detroit

By Tom Singer / MLB.com

Sooner or later, Justin Morneau is going to need a day off. But you can't really blame him for wanting to play through, can you?

Morneau has been red hot through the first 19 games of the season. He leads the Twins in on-base percentage (.511), slugging (.647) and home runs (four), and he ranks second in batting average (.368) and RBIs (15).

Oh, yeah, he's also got a bit of a streak going. In each of the Twins' 19 games this season, Morneau has reached base at least once, and he's hit safely in 16 of those.

Heading into the series finale against the Royals on Sunday, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire considered giving Morneau a day off, but the 28-year-old first baseman shrugged it off and ended up homering in his club's 4-3 loss.

Morneau believes this is no time to sit. Besides, the Twins had an off-day before opening the series in Detroit against the Tigers -- you know, the team they beat in a one-game playoff to sneak into the postseason last year.

Morneau missed the decisive late-season action between the American League Central rivals, sidelined by the stress fracture in his lower back. In a different sense, Tigers flag bearer Miguel Cabrera missed it, too, with different issues.

Both are looking forward to this reunion, Cabrera perhaps most of all. He is back at the top of his game, his tie-breaking homer in the ninth inning Monday night in Texas the latest stroke to the .363 start of his season, with five homers and 24 RBIs.

Morneau not wanting a day off because of how he feels at the plate is ironic, considering he looked like a man who badly needed an off-day all spring, when he batted .160 in 17 Grapefruit League games.

But throughout that preseason slump, he said there were no concerns.

"I wasn't worried about Spring Training at all," Morneau said. "It's different. I don't know how other guys feel. I know Joe [Mauer] can hit any time. But as you get further along in your career, you kind of need something to play for. And in Spring Training, you're not really playing for anything -- all you are trying to do is get ready. You don't have that intensity or that extra adrenaline you need as a baseball player.

"The purpose of my Spring Training was to come out of there healthy and feeling good body-wise. The focus wasn't so much on the swing. My body felt pretty good coming out of there."

Tigers: Verlander still working out kinks
Much like last year, when he made a strong case for an American League Cy Young Award, Justin Verlander has struggled to start the 2010 season. Of his four outings, only one was a quality start -- April 17 against the Mariners, when he gave up three runs in seven innings -- and that was also the only time he's gone deeper than five innings.

... Shortstop Adam Everett missed a second straight game Monday with a mild strain to his right hamstring.

Twins: Liriano lights out thus far

Francisco Liriano had to win a Spring Training battle to even make it onto the Twins' starting rotation to start the season. Now, he's looking like their ace. Going into his Tuesday start against the Tigers, Liriano easily has the lowest ERA on the staff at 1.29 after giving up just three runs in 21 innings.

Most impressively, he has yet to give up a home run to the 82 batters he's faced.

Worth noting
An MRI on infielder Nick Punto's right groin muscle came back fine, so now the Twins will look further at his right hip to see if that could be causing a problem with his groin area. Punto is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor retroactive to April 16.

... In each of their last three series, the Twins have won the first two games before dropping the finale. Minnesota has won all six of its series this season but has yet to sweep.

... The Twins won 12 of 19 games against the Tigers last season. At Comerica Park, they were 4-5.

Pitching matchup

DET: RHP Justin Verlander (1-1, 6.95 ERA)

If the parallels between this year and Verlander's outstanding 2009 season ring true, as they seemingly have so far, this should be the start where Verlander's season turns for the better. He struggled through his first four starts last year, including outings in Seattle and Anaheim, before finding the form that dominated hitters for the next five months. The hitch to that theory is that Verlander admits he has mechanical issues he needs to work out in order to find his command, and that could take longer than a few days. He earned his first win of the season on Thursday against the Angels, but he needed 125 pitches over five innings to do it, something no Major League pitcher had done in a victory since 1997.

MIN: LHP Francisco Liriano (2-0, 1.29 ERA)
Early on this season, Liriano has given the Twins glimpses of the pitcher who dominated the American League during his 2006 rookie season and was once considered one of the up-and-coming starters in the game. A little over three years removed from Tommy John surgery, Liriano is starting to trust his stuff once again. He's beginning to locate his fastball and use it to then set up his nasty slider and strong changeup. It's allowed the left-hander to get off to a strong start and look on the verge of perhaps becoming the Twins' top starter again. He'll have to continue the trend and next up is a test against the Tigers. Liriano is 3-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 11 career appearances (seven starts) against the Tigers.

He leads the American League with a .523 on-base percentage since April 10, while he is tied for third with a .392 batting average and 13 walks and is tied for eighth with 20 hits.

INGE LONGBALLS LEAD TO VICTORIES: Brandon Inge belted a pair of home runs in last night’s victory over the Rangers, his first home runs of the season. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Tigers have posted a 58-19 record in the 77 games in which Inge has hit a home run. The Tigers have won eight consecutive games that have featured Inge home runs, dating back to July 12, 2009 against Cleveland.

AUSTIN ADDING UP THE HITS: Austin Jackson collected a pair of hits last night against the Rangers and has hit safely in 17 of his first 19 major league games. He is the second Tigers player since at least 1920 to collect at least one hit in at least 17 of his first 19 career games. Jackson joins Dale Alexander, who hit safely in 18 of his first 19 career games in 1929.

BULLISH BEHAVIOR: Tigers relievers have posted a 1.48 ERA (30.1IP/5ER) over the last nine games. AUSTIN’S APRIL AMONG THE BEST: Austin Jackson collected two hits last night against the Rangers and is batting .325 (27x83) in his first month in the major leagues. MAGGLIO MOVING TOWARDS 2,000 HITS:
Magglio Ordonez enters tonight’s game four hits shy of 2,000 during his major league career. Ordonez would become the sixth player of Venezuelan descent to collect 2,000 hits, joining Omar Vizquel (2,706), Luis Aparicio (2,677), Andres Galarraga (2,333), Dave Concepcion (2,326) and Bobby Abreu (2,133).

The Tigers rank second in the American League with 54 doubles. The 54 doubles are the second-most by a Tigers team in April since at least 1952, trailing 56 doubles by the Tigers in April 2007.

MIGGY MAKING HIS MARK: Since joining the Tigers in 2008, Miguel Cabrera is batting .311 (407x1307) with 79 doubles, two triples, 76 home runs and 254 RBI. He leads the American League with 76 home runs and 254 RBI during that span, while he is fifth with a .311 batting average.

TIGERS AMONG AMERICAN LEAGUE BATTING LEADERS: The Tigers enter tonight’s game leading the American League with a .369 on-base percentage, while the club is second with a .280 batting average (195x697), 195 hits, 54 doubles and 92 walks and tied for third with 96 runs scored.

ALL-STAR BALLOTING UNDERWAY: Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that balloting has begun for the 81st All-Star Game, scheduled for Tuesday, July 13 at Angel Stadium. Balloting will be conducted in all 30 major league parks, online at mlb.com and on all 30 club web sites, including tigers.com. Firestone, the official sponsor of the 2010 In-Stadium All-Star Balloting Program, has teamed up with MLB for the Firestone/MLB All-Star Sweepstakes. Each in-stadium ballot includes a sweepstakes entry form to be completed by fans along with their votes for the All-Star Game starters. At the completion of the balloting period, one lucky fan will be randomly selected to win a new set of Firestone tires, as well as an all expenses paid trip to Anaheim to throw a Ceremonial First Pitch before the All-Star Game.
