Lakeland, Fla. -- A year ago, he was in high school.

Wednesday afternoon, Jacob Turner found himself on a mound at Marchant Stadium pitching to the New York Yankees -- and striking out the side, which made for an impressive debut by the 18-year-old right-hander who last June was the Tigers' first-round draft pick.

Curtis Granderson, playing against the Tigers for the first time since being traded to New York, singled in his first two at-bats, and Greg Golson hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift the Yankees to a 9-8 win over the Tigers on Wednesday.

Turner arrived for the third inning and struck out leadoff batter Mike Rivera on three pitches. He hit the next batter, Jorge Vazquez, with a curveball, before striking out Ramiro Pena, who took a curveball for strike three.

He walked Granderson, and then walked Nick Johnson on a 3-2 pitch. He then got Mark Teixeira on a swinging strike three to end the inning.

Turner is from Westminster Christian Academy in Ladue, Mo.

Granderson made a spectacular one-handed catch against the center-field wall.

Johnny Damon, who signed with the Tigers after four seasons with the Yankees, did not play because of a sore big toe on his right foot.

Gerald Laird hit a grand slam off starter Joba Chamberlain to give Detroit a 6-3 lead in the third inning. Teixeira hit his first homer of the spring off former Yankee Phil Coke in the same inning.

Tigers starter Armando Galarraga gave up two runs in two innings.

From The Detroit News:

“It takes pitching, hitting and defense. Any two can win. All three make you unbeatable.”
