'Wolves Down Curve 10-7 For Series Win
05/09/2010 5:27 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves slugged their way to a series win over the Altoona Curve with a 10-7 win on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.

Altoona struck first against Erie starter Andy Oliver in the bottom of the first inning. Gorkys Hernandez singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hernandez would later score on an error and Altoona took a 1-0 lead.

Curve starter Rudy Owens held the SeaWolves at bay for the first three innings. In the fourth, Cesar Nicolas walked with one out and with two outs, Michael Bertram connected on an opposite-field, two-run home run for a 2-1 Erie lead. The home run for Bertram was his second in as many games.

Altoona tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Alex Presley singled home Matt Hague.

In the fifth, Erie would regain the lead. Max St. Pierre led off and connected on a solo home run to left, his fifth, for a 3-2 lead. St. Pierre has now hit four home runs against Altoona. Shawn Roof followed with a single and with one out, Andy Dirks walked to put runners on first and second for Wilkin Ramirez. Ramirez singled up the middle, scoring Roof for a 4-2 lead. Nicolas followed with a single, scoring Dirks for a 5-2 lead.

Erie would tack on three more in the top of the seventh for an 8-2 lead. Roof led off with his second single of the game. Josh Burrus then walked and Dirks reached on an error to load the bases for Ramirez. Ramirez pulled a bases-clearing double down the left field line for the six-run lead. Ramirez now has eight RBI with the bases loaded.

The scoring wouldn't stop in the eighth for Erie as St. Pierre led off with a triple against reliever Ronald Uviedo. It was just the third triple of St. Pierre's career and his first since 2006. Roof grounded out, scoring St. Pierre for a 9-2 lead. With the bases clear, Burrus turned on a 3-2 pitch and connected on his third home run of the season for a 10-2 lead.

Altoona would not go quietly as they struck for four in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-6 game.

In the ninth, Brendan Wise came in to shut the door. Kris Watts led off with his second double of the game and moved to third as Shelby Ford reached on an error. Hernandez grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Watts to make it 10-7. Wise would end the game inducing a 4-3 double play off the bat of Jose De Los Santos.

Oliver (3-1) picked up the win going a season-high 7.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Oliver joins L.J. Gagnier as the second three-game winner for Erie.

The SeaWolves return home on Monday night for a three-game series against Akron...6:35 First Pitch.

Kibler Shines As 'Wolves Down Akron
By Nick Underhill
05/10/2010 10:45 PM ET

Recap Box

Jon Kibler was pleased with the result, but overall he didn't feel Monday was his best game.

In a night that was unseasonably cold, Kibler took the mound at Jerry Uht Park and realized that his slider wasn't going to be reliable since didn't have the same bite it usually has.

"I didn't have the slider today, but I tried to mix it in there," Kibler said. "My last start I had it. Today I wasn't able to find it again."

Wherever it was, it didn't matter. Kibler didn't need it. Using his two-seam fastball and a slider that didn't slide almost exculsively, the left-handed starter threw 7 2/3 innings of one run ball, scattered four hits, walked three and struck out two.

"I trusted my defense and threw the two-seamer down the middle and let them make plays," Kibler said.

As stifling as Kibler was, Akron (12-19) starter Kelvin De La Cruz did his best to match him pitch for pitch.

In his first start after being called up from Single-A Kinston over the weekend, De La Cruz allowed two runs over six innings and struck out seven.

"He kept guys off balance, had a great change-up, he was able to cut the ball in-I think that he pitched great," Erie manager Phil Nevin said.

De La Cruz, 21, made only two mistakes in the game, but both proved costly as each led to runs.

In the second inning, with Audy Ciriaco on second, he was called for a balk trying to pick-off Michael Bertram at first, which eventually allowed Ciraco to score on a Max St. Pierre single.

In the fifth, he left a fastball up in the zone that Andy Dirks took over the left field wall to put Erie up 2-0.

"I was looking for a fastball and he put it in the right spot," Dirks said. "He mixed up his pitches well, did a good job and kept us off balance."

The only batter he De La Cruz didn't have trouble with was Ciriaco, who recorded two hits off him.

"I was seeing the ball pretty well off him. When he was behind in the count he was trying to throw his change-up a lot," Ciriaco said. "Even in his 3-2 counts he was throwing it. He knew what he was doing."

On the heels of a 0-for-5 performance, Ciraco was able to get back on track Monday by going 2-for-4.

"I was pulling my head a little bit on the road. When you do that you can't see the ball well," Ciriaco said. "Today things worked a little bit better."

The SeaWolves (17-14) defense came up big in the game. Of the 20 outs that Kibler recorded, 11 came on infield grounders.

"You have to stay alert and ready," Ciriaco said. "It's easier to stay in the game like that."

Kibler gave up his run in the seventh after issuing a walk, a single and a double to three consecutive batters, which led to him being pulled from the game.

"You just have to rise to the occasion. You can't go out there and say, 'oh, he's doing real well'," Kibler said. "I had no doubt in my that we were going to win this game with the offense we have. (They) always rise to the occasion."

Chisenhall hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Espino, tying the game at 1-1. Nick Weglarz followed with a two-run home run to left giving the Aeros a 3-1 lead. Akron would never trail following that point.

The Aeros would score four runs against reliever Jay Voss in the sixth to open a 7-1 lead.

Erie would get one back in the bottom of the sixth when Bertram singled home Audy Ciriaco to make it 7-2.

Garcia took the loss and he is now 0-1.

05/13/2010 10:05 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves began a seven-game road trip with a 5-3 win over the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night.

The 'Wolves broke a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning when Cesar Nicolas led off and connected on a solo home run to left-center. The solo shot was his fourth of the season, giving the 'Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The 'Wolves added to the lead in the top of the sixth. Wilkin Ramirez and Nicolas led off with back-to-back singles. Ramirez would score on a single by Audy Ciriaco for a 2-0 lead. Michael Bertram followed with a single loading the bases for Cale Iorg. Iorg popped out to second for the first out of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Jeff Kunkel grounded to the second baseman Matt Tucker. Tucker booted the ball, allowing Nicolas to score from third, giving Erie a 3-0 lead. Justin Henry popped out to second for the second out but Josh Burrus came through with a two-run single up the middle scoring both Ciriaco and Bertram for a 5-0 lead.

Bowie got on the board in the sixth against Erie starter Thad Weber when Tyler Hensen connected on a solo home run to center making it 5-1.

The Baysox once again closed the gap in the seventh inning. With one out, Matt Angle and Jonathan Tucker each singled putting two on base. A double steal on a strikeout by Hensen put two in scoring position for Joel Guzman. Guzman singled up the middle off of Brendan Wise, plating both baserunners, making it 5-3.

The Baysox would get no closer as Wise retired the final seven hitters of the game to pick up his third save.

Rain Assists Baysox in 3-2 Win Over Erie
05/14/2010 11:37 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves battled two rain delays and could not overcome the Bowie Baysox on Friday night at Prince George's Stadium as they fell 3-2.

The two clubs got through the first inning scoreless before the skies opened and the rains forced a second delay. The rain delays totaled 1:46 and it sent Erie starter Andy Oliver to the showers early after just one shutout inning of work.

Bowie struck first in the bottom of the second against reliever Anthony Shawler. Joel Guzman led off and connected on his seventh home run of the season for a 1-0 Bowie lead. Shawler would then retire 10 of the next 11 batters he faced with five strikeouts.

Erie took the lead in the top of the fifth inning against Bowie starter Zach Britton. Cale Iorg led off and connected on a solo home run to center, his third, tying the game at 1-1. With one out Shawn Roof singled and stole second. A bunt by Josh Burrus moved Roof over to third and he would score on a bloop single to left off the bat of Andy Dirks for a 2-1 'Wolves advantage.

The Baysox would tie the game against reliever Jared Gayhart in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Caleb Joseph singled and stole second. After a Pedro Florimon walk, Matt Angle single to center, scoring Joseph, tying the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Baysox would regain the lead. Tyler Henson led off with a single. Gayhart then hit back-to-back hitters in Guzman and Brandon Waring to load the bases for Robbie Widlansky. Widlansky hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Henson for a 3-2 Bowie lead. Gayhart would get out of the inning only giving up the one run.

The one run lead would hold as Bowie's bullpen limited the SeaWolves to just one hit over the final four innings.

Gayhart took the loss dropping his record to 0-2.

The loss was Erie's first at Prince George's Stadium and it snapped a four-game winning streak against the Baysox.

The two clubs play game three of the four-game series on Saturday night...6:35 First Pitch. Maryland native, lefty Jon Kibler (3-2, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Steve Johnson (1-2, 3.08 ERA)

'Wolves Rally to Beat Baysox 9-6
05/15/2010 9:56 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves took down the Bowie Baysox, 9-6, in a drama filled game on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium.

The Baysox struck first against Erie starter Jon Kibler in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Caleb Joseph, Pedro Florimon and Matt Angle connected on three straight singles. Jonathan Tucker then laced a bases clearing double down the left field line giving the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

Erie clawed right back in the top of the fourth against Bowie starter Steve Johnson. Cesar Nicolas led off with his second of three singles. With one out, Josh Burrus was hit by a pitch putting two on base. With two outs, Andy Bouche singled to left, scoring Nicolas, cutting the Bowie lead to 3-1. Justin Henry followed with a single to right, scoring Burrius to make it a 3-2 game.

In the top of the fifth, the SeaWolves tied the game at 3-3 when Wilkin Ramirez crushed his eighth home run of the season over the wall in left. The home run broke an 0-for-8 skid at the plate for Ramirez.

Bowie regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Angle singled with one out and stole second. Tucker then grounded to short, however, Cale Iorg threw the ball away allowing Angle to score for a 4-3 Baysox edge.

The SeaWolves then took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Burrus led off with a walk and stole second. With one out, Bouchie was hit by a pitch putting two on for Henry. Henry laced a two-run double down the right field line giving the Howlers a 5-4 lead.

The lead would be short lived as Bowie tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Joel Guzman connected on a solo home run off of Kibler, his eighth, making it 5-5.

The Baysox regained the lead again in the bottom of the seventh. Joseph led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Joseph scored on a single by Angle for a 6-5 Bowie lead.

The wheels would then come off for the Baysox in the Erie half of the eighth. Burrus nearly tied the game when he connected on a leadoff triple off the wall in straight away centerfield. Iorg followed with a walk putting runners on the corners for Bouche. With Bouche at the plate, a routine throw over to first from reliever Eddie Gamboa settled in front of the first baseman Robbie Widlansky. Burrus alertly scored from third on the error making it a 6-6 game. Bouchie then laid down a bunt and Gamboa's throw to second was late allowing both Iorg and Bouche to reach safely. Henry then laid down a bunt to move the runners into scoring position, but an errant throw allowed Iorg to score and both runners to reach safely, giving the 'Wolves a 7-6 lead. With two outs and runners on the corners, Dirks grouned into what looked to be the inning-ending double play, however an error at second by Miguel Abreu allowed everyone to reach safely and Bouchie to score for an 8-6 lead.

Erie added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Michael Bertram extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with a one-out, solo home run over the wall in left, his fouth long ball of the season. Bertram has now hit safely in 19 of his last 21 games.

Luis Marte came out to work in the ninth inning and retired the first two hitters before giving up a single to left by Tucker and a double to Tyler Henson, brining the tying run to the plate in Guzman. Guzman flared a ball into right on a 3-2 pitch and Burrus made a great sliding catch to end the game.

Brendan Wise (2-0) got the win in relief. He worked 1.2 shutout, hitless innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Wise lowered his bullpen-best ERA to 0.87.

The SeaWolves have now won seven of nine against the Baysox this season including five of six at Prince George's Stadium.

The SeaWolves then exploded for a huge top of the fifth inning to take control of the game. Shawn Roof led off with an infield single and Henry singled to right putting two on for Dirks. Dirks came up with another big hit as he doubled home both runners for a 4-2 lead. Wilkin Ramirez then slammed his ninth home run of the season over the wall in left, giving Erie a 6-2 lead. The Ramirez home run would be the last pitch Mixon threw in the game has the SeaWolves chased the Richmond starter allowing a season-high six runs in a season-low four-plus innings pitched. The 'Wolves would go back-to-back as Cesar Nicolas stepped in and homered to straight away center against reliever Felix Romero. Michael Bertram then singled to left, his second hit of the game. Bertram has now hit safely in 11 consecutive games. He would eventually score on an error after Jeff Kunkel reached on an infield single giving Erie an 8-2 lead.

Richmond would get two back in the bottom of the fifth against reliever Jay Voss. Darren Ford walked, Brandon Crawford singled and Thomas Neal reached on an error loading the bases with no outs. Gillaspie singled home ford making it an 8-3 game. Ciriaco hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Crawford, cutting the Erie lead in half at 8-4. The Squirrels would get no closer.

The 'Wolves would add a ninth run in the top of the eight to go ahead 9-4. Kunkel led off with a single and moved to third on a Roof double. Kunkel would score on a single to left by Dirks. Dirks finished the day with a season-high five RBI.

For the second straight night, the SeaWolves collected season-highs in hits as they banged out 16. The three home runs equals a single game high for the 'Wolves.

Anthony Shawler (1-0) picked up the win for Erie tossing three scoreless innings in relief.

The 'Wolves are now a season-high seven-games over .500 and have won 23 of their last 31 games. With Altoona falling to Akron, Erie now leads the Western Division by a half game over the Curve.

The SeaWolves look for a series sweep on Thursday morning at The Diamond...10:35 a.m. First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber (2-3, 4.85 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against LHP Craig Clark (2-2, 4.05 ERA).

NOTES -

- Justin Henry has hit safely in four straight and has three consecutive multi-hit games. Henry has 10 hits and has reached base safely 13 times in his last four games.

- Michael Bertram has hit safely in 11 straight and in 22 of his last 24 games.

- The SeaWolves are 13-10 on the road and 5-1 on the current road trip.

Rough 8th Inning Sends Erie to Loss in Richmond
05/20/2010 12:55 PM ET

Recap Box

It was a pitchers duel on Thursday morning in Richmond until the Flying Squirrels broke through with two outs in the eighth inning, snapping Erie's three-game win streak by a score of 5-1.

The Flying Squirrels struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Thad Weber. Darren Ford led off and tripled to center. Brandon Crawford then walked putting runners on the corners for Thomas Neal. Neal hit into a 5-4-3 double play, scoring Ford for a 1-0 Richmond lead.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the third against Richmond starter Craig Clark. With one out, Justin Henry reached and got to second on a throwing error by the second baseman Juan Ciriaco. Shawn Roof followed with an RBI single to right, tying the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied until two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler La Torre kept the inning alive with a double off the wall in right. La Torre was replaced by a pinch runner Nick Noonan. Ciriaco followed and singled to left, his third hit of the game, scoring Noonan for a 2-1 Richmond lead. Ford walked putting two on for Crawford. Against reliever Zach Simons, Crawford belted a ball over the head of Wilkin Ramirez in center and turned it into an inside the park home run for a 5-1 Richmond lead.

Erie would get no closer as reliever Tony Pena (3-0) held the SeaWovles scoreless over the final 3.1 innings. Pena retired the last seven hitters he face and struck out five of the seven in picking up the win.

Weber (2-4) took the loss for the SeaWolves going a season-high 7.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Weber had allowed just one run on three hits through until Richmond broke the tie in the eighth.

Michael Bertram singled in his first at bat and his hitting streak is now at 12 consecutive games.

The SeaWolves return home to take on Altoona on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park...6:35 First Pitch. Lefty Jon Kibler (3-2, 3.54 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Bryan Morris (Double-A debut)

All weekend long UPMC Health Plan Paints the Park Pink. The SeaWolves will wear special pink jerseys all weekend long. The pink jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the weekend with the proceeds benefiting the Erie Regional Cancer Center and the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.

'Wolves Fall in Series Opener to Curve
By Nick Underhill
05/21/2010 9:17 PM ET

Recap Box

The grey, ominous sky hanging overhead Jerry Uht Park was foreboding sign of what was in store for the Erie SeaWolves Friday night.

The SeaWolves flirted with first place when they managed to move a game ahead of Altoona in the Eastern League's Western Division Wednesday, but their reign as kings had the lifespan of one night and one short morning. A late night dinner and a stake of pancakes at breakfast. By lunchtime Thursday, Erie had moved back to second after a 5-1 loss to Richmond.

"That was short," Erie manager Phil Nevin said. "It lasted, what, a whole eight hours?"

With a chance to gain ground against the Curve Friday in a head-to-head matchup Friday, the SeaWolves never showed up. They tripped into an early deficit, showed little pulse thereafter, and stumbled the rest of the night as they fell 6-2.

Erie starter Jon Kibler gave away six runs before the end of the third inning. The offense was equally anemic, as they combined for 15 strikeouts while collecting just five hits.

"I definitely didn't (give our team a chance to win) tonight," Kibler said. "I feel like I kind of let my teammates down."

Altoona starter Bryan Morris, who was part of the three-way deal between the Red Sox, Pirates and Dodgers that sent Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles and Jason Bay to Boston, baffled the Erie hitters in his first Double-A start.

"He had some really good stuff going," Erie catcher Andy Bouchie said.

Morris, 23, started the season with Class-A Bradenton where he posted a dominating 0.60 ERA over eight starts.

Using a nasty curveball and mid-90's fastball, Morris didn't miss a beat in his Altoona debut. Erie's offense generated only one run off him, a Wilkin Ramirez solo-homer, his league-leading 10th, in the sixth inning.

"It looked to me like he had pretty good stuff," Nevin said. "Mid-90's fastball with a really good breaking ball - he had our guys off."

Morris' night ended with one out in the fifth inning. He struck out seven, walked one, allowed one run and scattered three hits.

Kibler, who has been one of Erie's more reliable starters, has been uncharacteristically shaky in his last two starts.

Prior to his May 15 start against Bowie in which he allowed five runs, Kibler's ERA was a tidy 3.00. When he left the mound Friday, it stood at 4.44.

"I've been pulling my shoulder off and have a few other mechanical issues that I'm working on," Kibler said.

Kibler ran through the first inning on 16 pitches, things came unraveled for him in the second.

"He just wasn't executing, he'll tell you that too," Bouchie said. "It was just one of those days."

He issued a walk to the first batter he faced, followed by a base hit up the middle and an RBI double down the left field line to give Altoona its first run.

Things got worse from there. The next hitter softly hit a ball up the first baseline that scored another run when Michael Bertram made the ill-advised decision to try and retire the runner at home.

Kibler then loaded the bases on a walk, but caught a break when Alex Pressley was caught in a rundown between second and third on a sacrifice fly that scored Hector Gimenez, but by that time it was too late, as Altoona took a decisive 3-0 lead.

"I was walking guys, wasn't throwing strikes, wasn't getting ahead of guys and I kind of let it get to me," Kibler said.

Things didn't get better in the third. Kibler gave up three more runs before being pulled with one out and the Curve ahead 6-0.

"He just didn't have his best stuff tonight," Nevin said. "Five days from now, I can't wait for him to pitch again."

'Wolves Swept In Doubleheader
By Nick Underhill
05/22/2010 11:47 PM ET

Recap Box - GAME 1
Recap Box - GAME 2

Rain threatened to put a halt on the Erie SeaWolves double-header against the Altoona Curve Saturday.

That might have been the best thing that could have happened for Erie.

The SeaWolves suffered through a long and arduous evening as they dropped both games, 8-3 and 7-3.

Erie has now dropped four straight games and are now 3.5 games back of Altoona in the Eastern League Western Division standings.

The first-game was delayed by one hour, 14 minutes, and it proved to be the first malfunction of many for the 'Wolves.

In the first game, Altoona's offense took advantage of Erie starter Brooks Brown, who struggled with his command, and knocked him out of the game before he could record an out in the third after taxing him for seven runs.

Brown was forced to throw 36 pitches in the first inning as the Curve went through their order to take a 3-0 lead. He recovered in the second, getting three straight out s, but allowed the first three men to reach and score in the third before being pulled.

Erie tried to fight back in the bottom of the first. Justin Henry, Andy Dirks and Cesar Nicolas all worked walks to load the bases before Michael Bertram ripped a two-run double to centerfield. In the second, Chris White was able to steal first on a wild pitch after a swinging third strike, and was then drove home on a Henry double.

Altoona starter Jared Hughes went 4 1/3 innings, allowed three runs, walked five, scattered three hits and struck out seven.

Jay Voss pitched four innings of relief for Erie without allowing an earned run.

The second game started the same when Altoona put up three runs in the first inning.

Erie mounted a comeback in the second when Jeff Kunkel hit a triple down the third baseline that scored two runs, and was later driven in on a Chris White single to tie the game at 3-3.

Their comeback attempt proved futile, though, as Altoona added a run in the third and fourth, and two more in the seventh to seal the 'Wolves fate.

Erie starter Ramon Garcia went four innings, allowed five runs and struck out none.

The lone bright spot for Erie in the second game came from reliver Zach Simons, who went two innings, allowed one hit and struck out three.

Erie plays Altoona tomorrow at 1:05.

Andy Oliver went 6 2/3 innings and struck out nine batters in a 2-1 loss against Altoona at Jerry Uht Park.

Altoona completes sweep of 'Wolves
By Nick Underhill
05/23/2010 2:41 PM ET

Recap Box

Andy Oliver pitched the best game of his young professional career Sunday.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the best performance of the game.

That distinction belonged to Altoona starter Justin Wilson.

Oliver and Wilson went back and forth all afternoon, combining for 19 strikeouts, as the Curve prevailed over Erie 2-1 at Jerry Uht Park.

Oliver went 6 2/3 innings, scattered four hits, walked one and struck out nine.

"I was able to come in and out with my fastball and use my off-speed stuff to keep them off balance," Oliver said.

He was nearly flawless all afternoon and had the upper hand on Wilson until he surrendered a two-run home run on a changeup to Shelby Ford to give Altoona a 2-1 lead.

"I was throwing my fastball and slider and he fouled them off, so I wanted to throw a changeup down in the dirt," Oliver said. "I kind of hung it and made a mistake."

Wilson did his best to duel back against Oliver, but was pitching from behind most of the afternoon after Erie took a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

Chris White singled and took second to lead off the third. Shawn Roof then singled to move him to third.

Taking a page out of the sandlot playbook, the SeaWolves then successfully completed a double-steal to take the lead.

"Usually, it doesn't work as well as it did. In that situation the opposing team is usually thinking, there's an aggressive guy on first, a fast guy on third, you have to assume that they are going to put something on," White said. "That's the first time I believe that's worked out that well."

"With two good baserunners out there we felt that we could get a jump on him," Erie manager Phil Nevin said. "The pitcher was a little slow to the plate, so we figured if he did go home, we'd have that opportunity."

That would be the last the SeaWolves offense against Wilson, as the lefty responded by retiring the last 12 batters he faced in order.

In total, he went six innings, allowed two hits, no earned runs, walked three and struck out 10.

This was the fourth time that the SeaWolves had faced Wilson this season. In the three previous outings they enjoyed a measure of success, recording nine runs over 13 2/3 innings.

"He was about the same. He walked some guys and we swung at some bad pitches and let him off the hook," SeaWolves third baseman Shawn Roof said.

Erie had a chance to win the game in the ninth. With a man on first, Cesar Nicolas came to the plate with a man on and hit a Daniel Moskos pitch out to centerfield that died on the warning track.

"We had our chances. If the Erie wind is blowing like Erie wind does -- we're all celebrating and beating up Cesar at the plate after that one," White said.

Erie has now dropped four straight games against Altoona after briefly taking first place on Wednesday. They now trail the Curve by 4.5 games in the Western Division standings.

"I said earlier this year, we were going to have some streaks like did to start the season (Erie dropped its first eight games)," Nevin said. "Hopefully it doesn't get to eight, though."

Altoona's pitching was puzzling for the Erie hitters. By combining for 15 strikeouts Sunday, they raised their total for the four game series to 48.

"There has been way too many strikeouts. We've also been getting a lot of calls against that earlier this season we weren't," White said. "The zone was than usual."

Erie will now go on the road for a four game set against Trenton after traveling to Richmond last week.

"I've looked at everyone's schedule and this is pretty brutal. I'm not making excuses for our guys, but it's unfair, really," Nevin said. "We go to Trenton and play a 10:30 a.m. game Tuesday, play a night game Thursday and have to come home after that.

"It's just not right."

Five-Run Fourth Sends Erie to Sixth Straight Loss
05/24/2010 10:04 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves could not combat a five-run Trenton fourth inning as they dropped their sixth straight game, falling in the series opener 6-4 on Monday at Waterfront Park.

The 'Wolves struck first against reliever Wilkins Arias in the top of the fourth inning. Cesar Nicolas doubled to right with one out and scored on a two-out base knock to left from Josh Burrus, putting Erie ahead 1-0.

Trenton responded in the bottom of the fourth against Erie starter Duane Below. Justin Christian and Austin Krum drew back-to-back walks starting the inning. Austin Romine singled home Christian, tying the game at 1-1. Brandon Laird followed with an RBI double, scoring Krum for a 2-1 Trenton lead. With runners on the corners, Daniel Brewer grounded to Nicolas at third, Nicolas threw out Romine trying to score from third for the first out. Below then struck out Marcos Vechionacci for the second out but gave up an RBI single to Edwar Gonzalez for a 3-1 Trenton lead. Luis Nunez then walked to load the bases, ending Below's day. Anthony Shawler came in and replaced below facing Justin Snyder. Snyder popped up to the right side of the infield on what looked to be the third out, the ball dropped on the infield grass, allowing two more runs to cross the plate, giving Trenton a 5-1 lead.

Erie attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Nicolas singled to right and was doubled home by Bertram making it 5-2. Burrus followed and turned on a Ryan Pope fastball and hammered it out to left for his fifth home run. The two-run jack made it a 5-4 game.

Trenton would add an insurance run in the eighth to make it 6-4 and would hold on for the win as Eric Wordekemper shut down the side in order in the ninth.

Below (2-4) went 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Relievers Anthony Shawler and Brendan Wise combined to allow an unearned run on four hits over the final 4.1 innings of the game.

Erie will look to snap its six-game slide on Tuesday morning...10:35 a.m. First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber (2-4, 4.83 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Lance Pendleton (1-2, 4.35 ERA).

Ramirez Three Homers Not Enough in 7-6 Loss
05/26/2010 10:36 PM ET

Recap Box

The SeaWolves dropped their eighth consecutive game on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park, 7-6 to the Trenton Thunder. The 'Wolves are now a game under .500 for the first time since May 4.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Trenton starter D.J. Mitchell when Wilkin Ramirez snapped a four-game hitless streak connecting on his 11th home run for a 1-0 Erie lead.

Erie starter Jon Kibler had a rough go of it in the bottom of the second. Marcos Vechionacci and Edwar Gonzalez each singled and Vechionacci scored on a Luis Nunez double, tying the game at 1-1. With runners on second and third, Justin Snyder walked to load the bases. Justin Christian then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gonzalez for a 2-1 Trenton lead. Austin Krum singled home Nunez for a 3-1 lead and Brandon Laird singled home Snyder for a 4-1 lead.

Trenton would take a 5-1 lead in the fifth. Laird tripled to lead off the inning and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Brewer to right.

Erie closed the gap to 5-2 when Ramirez connected on his second solo home run of the game in the sixth with one out. The home run was his 12th.

Trailing by three in the eighth, the 'Wolves would rally. Shawn Roof walked with one out and Ramirez became the first SeaWolf this season to connect on three home runs as he took reliever Noel Castillo to straight away center making it a one-run game at 5-4. Cesar Nicolas followed with a double to center, his third hit of the game. With two outs, Josh Burrus singled home Nicolas, tying the game at 5-5.

The 'Wolves then regained the lead in the top of the ninth, Cale Iorg, who earlier in the game snapped an 0-for-23 skid at the plate, singled to right. Justin Henry then laid down a sacrifice bunt and on a throwing error, both runners reached safely putting runners on the corners for Andy Dirks. Dirks broke an 0-for-20 streak at the plate with an RBI single, scoring Iorg for a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the 'Wolves handed the ball to Luis Marte who was in search of his seventh save of the season. Marte struck out Christian for the first out but gave up a single to Krum putting the tying run on first. He then struck out Romine for the second out bringing Laird to the plate. Laird completed the cycle hitting a two-out, two-run home run to win the game for Trenton. The runs were the first allowed by Marte since April 15.

Erie is now 2-12 in at Waterfront Park since 2008 and 0-7 in Trenton this season.

The 'Wolves look to avoid their second consecutive series sweep on Thursday night in Trenton...7:05 First Pitch. Righty Brooks Brown (3-2, 4.55 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Hector Noesi (0-0, 7.50 ERA).

'Wolves Snap Eight Game Losing Streak
By Nick Underhill
05/28/2010 10:22 PM ET

Recap Box

It's often said that momentum can get away from you before you know it.

It can also return just as quick.

The Erie SeaWolves returned home Friday marred in an eight game skid after briefly taking control first place in the Eastern League Western Division May 19.

In desperate need of a win to shift the momentum back in their favor, the SeaWolves turned to their hottest pitcher, Andy Oliver, to break them out of the slump. He delivered in a big way.

The left-handed pitcher went seven innings, scattered five hits, surrendered one run, struck out six and walked none to lead Erie (24-24) to a !!!!! victory over the Harrisburg Senators (23-25) at Jerry Uht Park before 4,547 fans.

"He's hard for hitters to pickup. You don't see a lot of solid swings," Erie manager Phil Nevin said.

Oliver needed to face just 26 batters to get 21 outs. He struggled with his command early in the game, but once settling in he started to cruise through the Senators lineup. "It just wasn't there," Oliver said. "That was the difference in the later innings."

The only hiccup for Oliver came in the sixth inning when he surrendered a home run to Danny Espinosa that gingerly traveled over the shallow left field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

After getting off to a somewhat rocky start, Oliver has since turned it around, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.29 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 12 walks over his last 39 1/3 innings.

"Is he going to pitch in the big leagues? Yeah," Nevin said. "But there's still some things he needs to get better at."

The SeaWolves offense responded with a barrage of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they hit around the order. Josh Burrus drove in Wilkin Ramirez with a single up the middle, followed by a pair of homers by Audy Ciriaco and Andy Bouchie on back-to-back pitches to put Erie up 6-1.

"We hadn't had a big one like that in a while," Nevin said. "It's nice to be back at home."

In his first game back after missing the previous 12 with a wrist injury, Ciriaco went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Ciriaco traveled to Lakeland, Fla. to have his wrist re-evaluated while the SeaWolves were on the road. No further injury was revealed. He received a cortisone shot to help alleviate the pain.

"It feels good to be playing again," Ciriaco said. "It's still a little weak right now, I'd say 90 percent."

The Senators had a chance to take control of the game in the fifth inning when Tim Pahuta hit a line-drive down the first baseline with men on second and third, but Michael Bertram made a leaping grab and retired the runner at home.

"I got what, maybe three inches off the ground," Bertram said. "I wouldn't call it leaping."

"That was a huge play, it saved two runs for us," Oliver said.

Erie will attempt to string back-to-back victories tomorrow against the Senators at 6:35 p.m.

"We lost eight before, and had a pretty good stretch for about a month and a half," Erie manager Phil Nevin said. "We're very capable of doing that again."

'Wolves Fall to Senators in 13
By Nick Underhill
05/29/2010 10:36 PM ET

Recap Box

The Harrisburg Senators scored two-or-less runs in 23-games this season.

Unfortunately for the Erie SeaWolves, Saturday wasn't one of those nights.

The Senators (24-25) took advantage of a struggling Luis Marte to score three runs in the top of the 13th inning to hand the SeaWolves a 5-2 loss, their ninth in ten games.

Marte surrendered a single sandwiched between a pair of flyouts before issuing back-to-back walks and a bases clearing double to center field to Josh Johnson.

"He's a strike thrower, but that's the first time we saw him not throw strikes," Erie manager Phil Nevin said.

Behind strong performances from two previously slumping players, Duane Below and Andy Dirks, the SeaWolves beat the Senators 2-1. Erie starter Duane Below threw five sturdy innings, while Andy Dirks.

Below, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, was unable to get past the fourth inning in his previous three outings. But he reappeared as a force Saturday, going five innings, striking out two walking one and allowing one run.

"When he's getting ahead of guys like he was tonight, he's tough to face," Nevin said.

Following Dirks' homer, Erie maintained control of the game until the bottom of the ninth inning, where Anthony Shawler surrendered three consecutive singles, allowing the Senators to tie the game at 2-2.

Dirks entered the game marred in a 2-21 slump with 10 strikeouts over his last seven games.

"Dirksy grinds it out every day, but you don't notice all the things he does," Nevin said.

Erie (24-25) got on the board in the first inning. Justin Henry led of the inning with a single, and was later driven in on a Cesar Nicolas fielders choice hit to second base.

They had a chance to tie the game in the 12th inning by getting Josh Burrus to second with one out, but were unable to bring him home.

'Wolves Fall 8-6 to Senators on Sunday Afternoon
05/30/2010 5:20 PM ET

Recap Box

The current mentality of the Erie SeaWolves was captured perfectly in the fourth inning when Wilkin Ramirez failed to run out a pop fly.

Nothing is currently going right for this team as they dropped their second-straight game to Harrisburg Senators 8-6 at Jerry Uht Park Sunday.

Erie didn't lose because Harrisburg outplayed them. No, the SeaWolves lost behind a pair of base-running gaffes and costly error, bringing frustrations to boiling point as things continue to unravel for a team that fell to 24-26 after being in first place just 12-days ago.

Wilkin Ramirez was pulled from the game after failing to run out a pop fly hit to the second baseman in the fourth inning, and Erie manager Phil Nevin left the field as 3,696 fans cheered him off after getting tossed from the game for arguing a close play at first base in the ninth.

"Losing is frustrating," Roof said. "We had a lot of chances to win and we gave them away."

The tone of the game was set from the very beginning. On the first hit of the game, Roof booted a grounder that led to the Senators getting four unearned runs off Erie starter Thad Weber to go up 5-0.

Erie continued to chip away at the lead and got within 8-6 when Cale Iorg hit a ball deep into centerfield to lead off the sixth. But instead of settling for two bases, he tried to stretch it into a triple and was gunned out at third.

"The cardinal rule is not to make the first out at third," Nevin said.

Then, with two outs, Justin Henry was thrown out trying to steal second.

"In a game like that where your trading runs back-and-forth, you don't want to make outs on the bases."

Erie started to rally back in the seventh and got men on first and second with one out in the seventh, but another base running error quickly put a halt on their momentum when Chris White was thrown out at third after attempting a double-steal.

"Chris saw something and I followed behind," Bertram said. "The pitcher did a good job picking up on that."

Wilkin Ramirez said after the game that he apologized to his teammates for his lack of effort. Nevin said that he will back in the lineup tomorrow.

"I've been around this game for a long time, if you hit a ball you have to run," Ramirez said. "It was the right decision to pull me from the game."

Audy Ciriaco hit a grand slam off Andrew Kown, who previously spent time with SeaWolves from 2007-08 before being tendered his release by the Tigers, in the bottom of the first inning to bring the score to 5-4.

Ramirez, who leads the league with 14 homers, and Josh Burrus (6) also added home runs.

Kown went four innings, allowing six runs, against his former team.

After Weber was pulled from the game following the fifth inning, Ramon Garcia and Zach Simons combined for four scoreless innings.

Roof tripled down the right field line, plating White and Dirks for a 7-4 lead. Ramirez then connected on his second double of the game scoring Roof for an 8-4 lead. Erie finished off the six-run inning when Ciriaco pelted his third home run of the series over the wall in left. The two-run blast made it 10-4.

Erie would add a run in the eighth to make it 11-5 when Nicolas doubled home Roof.

Harrisburg would score four runs in the ninth inning against reliever Anthony Shawler making it an 11-9 game.

Kibler (4-3) picked up the win going seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
