Rogers, Rodriguez and Everett on ESPN's defensive all-decade team
Tony Paul / The Detroit News

The best of the 2000s continued Monday, with ESPN rolling out the best defensive baseball players of the decade.

And three players with Tigers ties made the list -- two obvious, one not so much.

Starting pitcher Kenny Rogers and catcher Pudge Rodriguez were no-brainer selections, considering between them they took home 18 Gold Glove awards. Both had such a sterling reputation -- Rogers for his pickoff move, Rodriguez for his cannon arm -- that runners, even the best, more often than not didn't even attempt to steal.

The more surprising honor went to Adam Everett.

Everett, who this month re-signed with the Tigers, has never won a Gold Glove and never has been known as a good hitter.

Said ESPN's Rob Neyer: "Everett has never started 150 games in a season. He's started more than 120 games in a season just twice. That's the best explanation for Everett's failure to win even a single Gold Gove: The voters prefer every-day players. And they particularly like every-day players who can hit a little. That's just not Adam Everett. But despite his lack of playing time, he easily saved more runs in this decade than any other shortstop: 87 runs, to be (approximately) precis, and 18 runs per 150 games."

The rest of ESPN's list: Albert Pujols (first base), Chase Utley (second base), Scott Rolen (third base), Carl Crawford (left field), Andruw Jones (center field) and Ichiro Suzuki (right field).

Utley and Crawford, like Everett, never have won a Gold Glove.

They were?

13 of those 18 belong to Rodriguez and 8 of those 13 were won in the 1990s.

Rogers has 5 gold gloves (all from the 2000s).

Greg Maddux has 18 gold gloves on his own including 8 from the 2000s.
