EARLY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES LEAD TO LOSS
07/17/2010 10:57 PM ET

GENEVA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps opened a three-game series against the Kane County Cougars with a 7-3 loss on Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium.

West Michigan (7-15, 33-58) put their leadoff man on base in each of the first five innings, but failed to bring home any of them and stranded six runners over that stretch. Despite the return of all-star Giovanni Soto from the Disabled List earlier in the day, the Whitecaps could not prevent Kane County (14-8, 46-45) from winning a fifth consecutive game and for the 10th time in their last 12 contests.

The Cougars broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Rashun Dixon led off with a single, but it was a key passed ball with two outs that moved him into scoring position. Conner Crumbliss then lined a single through the left side that scored Dixon from second as the unearned run gave Kane County a 1-0 lead.

One inning later, the Cougars seized control in the fourth.

Soto allowed three singles that loaded the bases with one out before running into his pitch count, and all three runs came around to score against reliever Jordan Pratt. After walking Dixon to force in the first run, everybody moved up 90 feet on a single by Leonardo Gil and Juan Nunez added a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Gil blasted a solo homer in the sixth to stretch Kane County's lead to 5-0.

The 'Caps went down fighting, scoring three runs in the final two frames to make the Cougars work for the final outs.

Jamie Johnson led off the top of the eighth with a double into the left field corner, scoring on a two-out single by Wade Gaynor that stretched his hitting streak to 12 games. Kane County countered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, while West Michigan capped the scoring with two more runs of their own in the ninth. The Whitecaps scored their last two runs on three singles and a pair of wild pitches, with Rob Brantly pushing his hitting streak to 10 games while Hernan Perez contributed a run-scoring hit to arrive at the 7-3 final.

Dan Straily (7-6) earned the win with an impressive performance, striking out seven and scattering five hits over six innings of work. He was able to consistently work around trouble early and finished strong by retiring the last six batters he faced. During that final stretch, he struck out four consecutive hitters between the fifth and sixth innings.

Soto (5-6) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps, charged with four runs - three earned - on six hits over 3.1 frames. The lefty struck out three without issuing a walk and threw 62 pitches in his first action since June 30. All three of the earned runs against him scored after his removal from the contest.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game Western Division swing with game two of a three-game set in Kane County on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET. RHP Trevor Feeney (7-9, 3.49) is set to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Ian Krol (7-3, 2.28) of the Cougars. The 'Caps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, July 21, for a 7:00 p.m. game featuring Hand Fans for the first 2,500 fans thanks to DFCU Financial and post-game fireworks courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS CAN'T CLIMB OUT OF EARLY HOLE
07/17/2010 12:05 AM ET

CLINTON, IA - The West Michigan Whitecaps could not overcome a six-run hole in the first inning on Friday night, battling back to make a game of it before ultimately succumbing to the Clinton LumberKings, 11-5, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Alliant Energy Field.

West Michigan (7-14, 33-57) registered 14 hits, led by a 3-for-5 night from Corey Jones, and pulled to within three runs at one point, but Clinton (11-9, 48-41) was able to hold on thanks to a strong effort from their bullpen.

The LumberKings jumped all over 'Caps starter Luis Angel Sanz with six runs in the opening frame. It started with a single by leadoff man Luis Nunez, who circled the bases with a steal, an error, and a wild pitch to score the game's first run. Nick Franklin and Vinnie Catricala followed with consecutive walks while Tim Morris doubled home the second run of the frame. With runners at second and third Sanz notched a strikeout for the first out of the inning, but James Jones followed by ripping a two-run double to right for a 4-0 advantage.

After another strikeout, Daniel Carroll's two-base hit drove in a fifth run and chased Sanz from the ballgame. Gabriel Noriega greeted reliever Zach Samuels with a bouncing ball through the left side to plate Carroll, capping the rally and staking Clinton to a commanding 6-0 lead.

From there, the two clubs traded blows as the Whitecaps tried to claw their way back into the ballgame.

Tony Plagman doubled and scored on a single by Rob Brantly to put West Michigan on the board in the top of the second. After Clinton countered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, consecutive run-scoring singles by Corey Jones and Wade Gaynor in the third brought the Whitecaps to within 7-3.

The LumberKings' Daniel Carroll led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer, but West Michigan crossed the plate twice more in the fifth. Corey Jones yanked the first pitch of the inning inside the bag at first for a double, while a walk to Gaynor and a single by Plagman loaded the bases with nobody out. Later in the frame, Brantly contributed a run-scoring groundout and Clay Jones chipped in with a single that scored Gaynor while Plagman was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. When the dust had settled, the deficit was cut to 8-5.

That was as close as the Whitecaps could get.

Clinton reliever Jose Jimenez came in for the sixth inning and proceeded to throw three scoreless frames to halt West Michigan's comeback bid. Meanwhile, Kalian Sams put the game away with a three-run homer off Shawn Teufel in the bottom of the eighth, cementing the 11-5 final.

Taylor Stanton (7-4) earned the win despite getting knocked around for five runs on 11 hits over five innings of work. Sanz (1-4) took the loss for West Michigan after getting battered for six runs on four hits in just two-thirds of an inning.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game Western Division swing with the opener of a three-game set in Kane County on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. ET. RHP Trevor Feeney (7-9, 3.49) is set to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Dan Straily (6-6, 4.63) of the Cougars. The 'Caps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, July 21, for a 7:00 p.m. game featuring Hand Fans for the first 2,500 fans thanks to DFCU Financial and post-game fireworks courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. LATE HOMER THE DIFFERENCE IN 'CAPS LOSS
07/18/2010 5:28 PM ET

GENEVA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps and Kane County Cougars went toe-to-toe in a see-saw affair on Sunday afternoon, but a home run by Leonardo Gil snapped a late tie and doomed the Whitecaps to a 4-3 loss at Elfstrom Stadium.

West Michigan (7-16, 33-59) lost for the fourth time in five games and fell to 1-10 on the road against Western Division teams this season. Conversely, red-hot Kane County (15-8, 47-45) picked up their sixth straight win and clinched their sixth consecutive series victory.

Early on, the story of the game was a pair of starting pitchers. Whitecaps' hurler Trevor Feeney, pitching just 20 minutes away from his hometown of Channahon, Illinois, turned in his 13th quality start of the season and did not allow a run until the fifth. Cougars' 19-year-old lefty Ian Krol was also dominant, allowing just one hit and one run over five impressive innings of work.

The Cougars entered play without having trailed during the current winning streak, but the Whitecaps ended that stretch in the top of the first. With two outs and the bases empty Corey Jones was hit by a pitch. Wade Gaynor promptly delivered a run-scoring double to right-center that gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead while extending his hitting streak to 13 games, equaling the longest stretch by a Whitecap this season.

The slim one-run lead stood up until the fifth, when Kane County finally broke through against Feeney. Gil led off the inning with a single through the left side and scored all the way from first on a long double to right-center by Chris Affinito. Later in the frame there were runners at the corners with one out when Jose Crisotomo sent a grounder to first. Clay Jones picked up the roller, stepped on the bag and fired to second where the final out was recorded after a rundown. During the play, however, Affinito crossed the plate before the third out was recorded and the Cougars took a 2-1 lead.

Moments later, the 'Caps battled back to even the score. Gaynor stole second with two outs in the top of the sixth and Avisail Garcia lined a single to left. Gaynor raced home as left fielder Rashun Dixon fired a one-hop strike to the plate, but Gaynor slid around the catcher's lunging tag attempt and brushed the plate with his left hand to tie the game at 2-2.

Shortly thereafter, however, Kane County regained control. Gil led off the seventh inning with a long solo homer to center, blasting his second bomb in as many days to put the Cougars ahead. In the eighth, West Michigan reliever Matt Little was called for a disputed balk with men at the corners to spot Kane County a 4-2 lead.

The Whitecaps pulled within one in the ninth, when Clay Jones belted a laser over the left field fence for a solo homer. Rob Brantly later drew a two-out walk to put the potential game-tying run on base, but Jamie Johnson's game-ending groundout sealed the 4-3 loss.

Cougars' reliever Bo Schultz (4-1) earned the win out of the bullpen despite allowing one run over two innings and being charged with a blown save. A.J. Huttenlocker (1) earned his first save of the year after entering the game in the ninth inning to record the final two outs.

Feeney (7-10) suffered the loss for West Michigan after scattering nine hits over 6.2 innings and allowing three runs.

The Whitecaps wrap up a six-game Western Division swing with the finale of a three-game set in Kane County on Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET. LHP Jared Wesson (2-0, 2.15) is set to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Murphy Smith (4-0, 5.48) of the Cougars.

WHITECAPS SWEPT AWAY IN SERIES FINALE
07/19/2010 4:50 PM ET

GENEVA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps finished a 1-5 road trip with their fourth consecutive loss on Monday, falling by an 8-2 score as the Kane County Cougars completed a three-game sweep at Elfstrom Stadium.

West Michigan (7-17, 33-60) had their chances early, but went just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base. Four of the five walks issued by the Whitecaps pitching staff came around to score, as red-hot Kane County (16-8, 48-45) kept rolling with their seventh consecutive win while completing a dominant 8-1 homestand.

The Cougars were able to jump in front early by turning leadoff walks into runs in each of the first two innings.

In the opening frame, Connor Crumbliss drew a free pass and was bunted to second. A wild pitch then moved Crumbliss to third and drew the infield in, enabling Myrio Richard to bounce a single over the third baseman's head for the first run of the game. One inning later, Leonardo Gil walked and eventually scored on an infield single with two outs by Jose Crisotomo for a 2-0 lead.

That score remained until the fifth, when Kane County went back to work and doubled the advantage. With reliever Zach Samuels on the hill for West Michigan, Crisotomo singled and Anthony Aliotti drew a walk. The runners were at first and second with two outs when Jason Christian lifted a flare down the left field line that dropped just beyond the outstretched glove of a diving Jamie Johnson. Though Christian was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, his two-base knock scored both baserunners as the Cougars pushed their lead to 4-0.

West Michigan cut the deficit in half with a rally in the seventh. Jimmy Gulliver got it started with an infield single while Jeff Rowland added a base hit with one out. Corey Jones followed with a bloop-single to center that drove home Gulliver, and a throwing error later in the frame allowed Rowland to trot home and make it a 4-2 ballgame.

Within shouting distance for a moment, the Whitecaps watched a manageable deficit disappear in the bottom of the eighth. Kane County used a walk and two singles to load the bases with nobody out before reliever Nathan Newman hit a batter to force in a run. As the inning continued, Chris Affinito drove in a run with a well-executed suicide squeeze bunt and Crumbliss added a two-run double as the Cougars snatched a comfortable 8-2 advantage.

Kane County's Murphy Smith (5-0) earned the win, staying perfect by scattering nine hits and allowing two runs - one earned - over 6.2 innings of work. West Michigan starter Jared Wesson (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up two runs on four hits over four frames.

Two Whitecaps players were able to extend lengthy hitting streaks in the loss. Wade Gaynor singled with two outs in the ninth to keep his streak alive at 14 games, and is batting a blistering .367 during the longest streak by a Whitecaps player this season. Meanwhile, Rob Brantly's sixth-inning single continued a 12-game stretch for the 20-year-old catcher who was playing in just his 20th game since being taken in the third-round of the 2010 draft.

The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark to host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) on Wednesday, July 21, for a 7:00 p.m. game featuring Hand Fans for the first 2,500 fans thanks to DFCU Financial and post-game fireworks courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. RHP Victor Larez (6-7, 4.56) is slated to take the hill for the 'Caps against RHP Maverick Lasker (5-3, 3.36) of the Timber Rattlers. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS QUIETED BY LASKER IN RETURN HOME
07/21/2010 10:16 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps opened a six-game homestand in front of a raucous crowd of 6,906 on Wednesday night, but suffered their fifth straight loss with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (7-18, 33-61) got a quality start from Victor Larez and three scoreless innings from the bullpen, but struggled to get anything going against Wisconsin (12-13, 38-55) starter Maverick Lasker.

The 20-year-old Lasker (6-3) stole the show, cruising through seven strong innings and allowing just one run on four hits to earn the win. He retired 18 of the first 20 batters he faced and carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh. Lasker struck out two and did not issue a walk, with two hits by Avisail Garcia- who went 3-for-4 on the night - marking the only baserunners Lasker allowed until his final frame in the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Timber Rattlers gave Lasker a first-inning lead with a little help from the Whitecaps. There were men at the corners with two away when Larez struck out Hunter Morris with a breaking ball in the dirt. The ball squirted away for a wild pitch, however, as Kentrail Davis raced home from third and Morris reached first base for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, a leadoff error sparked another rally. Cutter Dykstra reached base on a high throw from third baseman Wade Gaynor, and stole second before scoring on a base hit by Cameron Garfield. After Garfield took second on the throw to the plate, Michael Marseco delivered a run-scoring double that stretched Wisconsin's lead to 3-0.

West Michigan threatened late, finally breaking through against Lasker in the bottom of the seventh. Corey Jones led off the inning with a ground rule double and came around to score on a base hit by Tony Plagman.

Trailing 3-1, the Whitecaps mounted a two-out rally in the eighth. Jamie Johnson singled before walks to Hernan Perez and Corey Jones loaded the bases. Gaynor then blasted a 1-0 pitch to deep left-center that brought the crowd to its feet, but left fielder Khris Davis ran it down one step in front of the wall to quiet both the crowd and the rally.

After escaping the bases-loaded jam in the eighth, Nick Bucci (1) worked around a one-out single in the ninth to notch the two-inning save.

Larez (6-8) suffered the loss for West Michigan despite a solid outing. The 23-year-old Venezuelan right-hander struck out five without issuing a walk and allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits over six innings. He was followed by Jordan Pratt, who threw two scoreless frames, and Shawn Teufel, who added one shutout inning in the ninth.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with the second game of a three-game set against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (1-4, 6.45) is slated to take the hill for the 'Caps against LHP Del Howell (2-4, 5.09) of the Timber Rattlers. In addition to $2 food and beverage specials during an Altogas Thrifty Thursday, it will also be Beach Night featuring a special post-game concert by The Concussions. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS, RATTLERS SUSPENDED DUE TO RAIN
07/22/2010 9:34 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Just three outs short of an official game, the West Michigan Whitecaps and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were suspended due to rain on Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Wisconsin was leading by a 2-0 score at the time of the delay, but West Michigan had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth.

As Luis Alberto Sanz took a first-pitch ball from lefty Del Howell, a display of lightning lit up the night sky and forced plate umpire Jeff Klinghoffer to clear the field. Moments later, the lightning delay became a rain delay as the skies opened up and the torrential downpour began. After a delay of 52 minutes, the contest was officially suspended.

The game will be resumed at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night with Sanz at the plate, the bases loaded, and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth. Following the conclusion of the suspended nine-inning game, the Whitecaps and Timber Rattlers will wrap up the series with a seven-inning contest to account for Friday's regularly scheduled finale.

Before the weather got in the way on Thursday, the Timber Rattlers struck for two runs in the top of the second. Hunter Morris led off with a single and stole second, scoring two batters later on a single to right by Cameron Garfield. Garfield advanced to second on the play courtesy of a fielding error in the outfield, which enabled him to score on a base hit by Joey Paciorek that gave Wisconsin a 2-0 lead.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with bonus baseball against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23. After completing Thursday's suspended contest, the two clubs will play a seven-inning game to wrap up the series. All-Star LHP Giovanni Soto (5-6, 2.55) is slated to take the hill for the 'Caps in the second game against RHP Damon Krestalude (2-5, 5.53) of the Timber Rattlers. Another installment of the Tigers Friday series brings Larry Herndon to the ballpark and the first 1,000 fans will receive a bobblehead doll in his likeness. There will also be a special "Field of Dreams" promotion after the game in which 1,000 prizes will be scattered on the field. Fans are invited to take batting practice and keep whatever prize they hit first! Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

PLAGMAN POWERS GAME TWO EXPLOSION IN SPLIT
07/23/2010 11:56 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers each picked up a victory on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, with the 'Caps battling back for a 14-8 win in the nightcap after the Timber Rattlers snuck out a 3-2 victory in the completion of Thursday night's suspended game.

After dropping the early game, West Michigan (8-19, 34-62) exploded a seven-run rally in the third inning of the second contest, batting around before an out had been recorded. Tony Plagman led the charge with a 3-for-3 effort that included a home run and four RBI, but Wisconsin (13-14, 39-56) still took two of the three games in the series.

Following a game-one loss and a 30-minute break, the Whitecaps exploded in the nightcap. Rob Brantly's run-scoring double in the second inning helped West Michigan to a 2-0 advantage, but it was a monster rally one inning later that put the game out of reach.

The first nine batters in the bottom of the third inning all reached base for the Whitecaps and the first seven hitters of the frame all came around to score. Wade Gaynor and Avisail Garcia each delivered two-run singles before a walk to Brantly loaded the bases and chased Timber Rattlers' starter Damon Krestalude from the game. Alexis Espinoza and Jimmy Gulliver greeted reliever Adrian Rosario with consecutive run-scoring hits and Jamie Johnson added a sacrifice fly to cap the rally. When the dust had settled, five singles and three walks led to a comfortable 9-0 advantage.

Despite the hefty lead, West Michigan was far from done. Ahead by a 9-2 score, Plagman went to work in the fourth and fifth innings to blow the game wide open. The Tigers' ninth-round pick out of Georgia Tech in this summer's draft delivered an RBI-single and came around to score in the fourth as the lead swelled to 11-2. One inning later, the 22-year-old slugger blasted a three-run homer to right-center that made it a 14-2.

With the game out of hand, the Timber Rattlers rallied late for four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh before the Whitecaps wrapped up the 14-8 final. Giovanni Soto (6-6) earned the win, allowing three runs - two earned - on four hits over five innings. Krestalude (2-6, 6.71) suffered the loss after getting knocked around for nine runs on six hits in just two frames.

Earlier in the day, it was Wisconsin picking up a victory.

Friday's action officially began on Thursday night, when the Timber Rattlers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. That score remained until lightning and rain sent the game into a delay in the bottom of the fifth. Though the Whitecaps were mid-rally with the bases loaded and nobody out, Mother Nature forced the game to be suspended and the rally had to wait one more night.

When play resumed on Friday, Luis Alberto Sanz had a 1-0 count with the bags packed and nobody out. He smacked a pitch from Santo Manzanillo back up the middle, but the ball ricocheted off the pitcher's leg and right to the third baseman, who threw home for a force out. Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to right that cut the deficit in half, but that was all the 'Caps would muster as Wisconsin held on to a 2-1 lead.

Chris Dennis made it 3-1 with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, but West Michigan rallied again in the bottom half of the frame. Gaynor delivered the first of four consecutive hits with a one-out double and moved to third on an infield single by Plagman. Garcia chipped in with a run-scoring single to right and Michael Rockett loaded the bases with a hit up the middle. But 3-2 was as close as the Whitecaps could get, as Clay Jones popped up on the infield and Luis Alberto Sanz lined out to first to strand the bases loaded.

Manzanillo (1-1) earned the win for Wisconsin with 3.1 innings after play resumed on Friday, while Luis Angel Sanz (1-5) suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs - one earned - over five frames on Thursday night.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with game one of a three-game series against the Beloit Snappers (Twins) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24. RHP Trevor Feeney (7-10, 3.52) is slated to take the hill for the 'Caps against RHP Tom Stuifbergen (4-0, 1.48) of the Snappers. The ballgame will feature special jerseys, promotions and in-park characters on Star Wars Night, which will kick off with glow-in-the-dark baseballs for the first 1,000 fans and wind down with fireworks courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

COMEBACK-MINDED 'CAPS FALL SHORT IN NINTH
07/24/2010 11:02 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps overcame a pair of deficits during a back-and-forth affair on Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, but eventually ran out of late-game dramatics in a 6-4 loss to the Beloit Snappers in front of a season-high crowd of 10,010 raucous fans.

West Michigan (8-20, 34-63) scored twice in the fifth to overcome a 1-0 deficit and pushed two more runs across in the eighth to erase a 4-2 disadvantage. Beloit (12-14, 49-46) always seemed to have an answer, though, scoring runs in each of the last four innings to hold on for the victory.

Trailing 4-2, the Whitecaps gave their first crowd of more than 10,000 fans this season something to cheer about in the bottom of the eighth. Jamie Johnson and Jeff Rowland each drew walks to start the rally while Corey Jones bunted the runners to second and third. Cleanup batter Wade Gaynor followed with a grounder to the right side that scored Johnson to cut the deficit to one run. With two outs and an 0-2 count, Tony Plagman delivered the game-tying hit, an opposite field double to left that evened the score at 4-4.

Once again, however, the Snappers had an answer.

James Beresford led off the ninth with a single against Whitecaps reliever Jordan Pratt and was replaced at first on a fielder's choice by Steven Liddle. After Liddle stole second, Rams drove him in with a line-drive single to center that proved to be the game-winning hit. Later in the frame, Anderson Hidalgo's two-out single plated Rams for the decisive 6-4 edge.

The Whitecaps did not go down without a fight, mounting another threat in the bottom of the ninth. Rob Brantly singled and Clay Jones was hit by a pitch to put the potential game-tying run on base with nobody out. Jimmy Gulliver followed with a hard-hit ball up the middle that snuck through the legs and under the glove of the pitcher, rolling directly to the bag at second where the shortstop Beresford was waiting to start a rally-killing double play. The next batter flew out harmlessly as the Snappers held on for the 6-4 win.

Beloit reliever Matthew Hauser (1-0) earned the victory with two scoreless innings after initially allowing a pair of inherited runners to score during a blown save. Pratt (0-1) took the loss for West Michigan, charged with two runs on four hits over 1.2 frames.

Early on, the Snappers came out swinging in the top of the first as three of the first four batters of the night hit safely. Aaron Hicks opened the game with a liner to center and advanced from first to third on a single to right by Liddle. Rams followed with a groundball through the middle that plated Hicks for a 1-0 lead.

That deficit remained until the bottom of the fifth. Beloit starter Tom Stuifbergen entered the frame with a one-hit shutout, but the Whitecaps sent eight men to the plate in the go-ahead rally. Gaynor got it started with a low liner through the middle and Garcia added a one-out double that placed runners at second and third. Brantly sent a slow chopper to second that tied the game when Gaynor beat the throw to the plate. One batter later, Clay Jones smacked a sacrifice fly to deep center that put West Michigan in front, 2-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Snappers scored single runs in each of the next three innings. Lance Ray tied the score with a solo homer in the sixth and Beresford broke the tie with a run-scoring single in the seventh. After Ray doubled and scored in the eighth, Beloit's advantage was 4-2.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with game two of a three-game series against the Beloit Snappers (Twins) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 25. LHP Jared Wesson (2-1, 2.43) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against LHP Clint Dempster (1-0, 7.20) of the Snappers. It will be a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day featuring free lunch for the first 1,000 kids, pre-game catch on the field, and player autographs before the game. After the contest, stick around and kids can run the bases just like the pros! Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

GARCIA REACHES FIVE TIMES AS 'CAPS CRUISE
07/25/2010 5:01 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Avisail Garcia reached base in all five of his plate appearances and drove in two key insurance runs late in the game to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to an 8-4 win over the Beloit Snappers at Fifth Third Ballpark on Sunday.

In addition to Garcia's 3-for-3 day that included two runs and two RBI, Tony Plagman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to highlight a 10-hit West Michigan (9-20, 35-63) attack. Garcia and Plagman also drew a pair of walks each as Beloit (12-15, 49-47) issued nine free passes on the afternoon.

The Whitecaps led wire-to-wire on Sunday, jumping out to a lead in the bottom of the first. Michael Rockett and Plagman each singled before Garcia drew a walk that loaded the bases with two outs. Clay Jones then coaxed a free pass to force in the first run. Hernan Perez followed with a bouncer to the first baseman, but the pitcher covering the bag dropped the throw as two runs scored for a 3-0 West Michigan lead.

Wade Gaynor added a sacrifice fly in the second for a 4-0 advantage, but the Snappers countered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to trim the Whitecaps' margin to 4-2.

In the fifth, the 'Caps went back to work. Singles by Garcia and Jones opened the frame and both runners scored on a bouncing-ball double past third by Perez that pushed the lead to 6-2.

Beloit's Danny Rams made it a 6-4 game with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh as the Snappers continued to charge back.

In the bottom of the eighth, however, West Michigan put the game out of reach. Gaynor drew a one-out walk to start the rally and moved to second on a base hit by Plagman. Garcia then delivered the big blow, clubbing a two-run double into the gap in left-center for the decisive 8-4 margin.

The extra cushion proved to be important as the Snappers loaded the bases in the ninth before reliever Kenny Faulk induced a game-ending pop-out to seal the victory.

Jared Wesson (3-1) earned the win with six innings of work, allowing four runs on six hits while walking six and striking out two.

Clint Dempster (1-1) suffered the loss, issuing five walks over two frames and giving up four runs - two earned - on three hits.

The Whitecaps conclude a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with the finale of a three-game series against the Beloit Snappers (Twins) at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26. RHP Victor Larez (6-8, 4.44) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP Miguel Munoz (7-5, 4.83) of the Snappers. Fans bringing church or community bulletins will receive half-priced box or reserved seats thanks to All Faiths Night presented by JQ 99 FM. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

INTERDIVISIONAL PLAY ENDS WITH 8-2 LOSS
07/26/2010 10:45 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps played their final regular season game of the season against a Western Division opponent on Monday night, falling by an 8-2 score to the Beloit Snappers in the rubber match of a three-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (9-21, 35-64) finished the interdivisional portion of their schedule with a 6-18 record, losing seven of their eight series' against opponents from the West. On Monday, James Beresford led the charge for Beloit (13-15, 50-47) with a 3-for-5 effort that included three RBI.

The Snappers took an early lead and never looked back, crossing the plate three times over the first two innings.

Steven Liddle's run-scoring double in the opening frame put Beloit out in front while Yorby Martinez and Michael Gonzalez opened the second inning with consecutive singles. With runners at the corners and nobody out, Derek McCallum singled to drive home Martinez and Aaron Hicks later added a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 advantage.

As it turned out, that was more than enough for Snappers' starting pitcher Miguel Munoz (8-5) to win his seventh consecutive decision. The 21-year-old Venezuelan right-hander struck out eight without issuing a walk over six impressive innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out the side in the second - punching out five of the first nine batters he faced - and retired nine of the first 10 men that came to the plate before the Whitecaps mounted their first rally.

Rob Brantly's RBI-single in the fourth brought West Michigan to within a 3-1 score, but Beloit immediately answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Reggie Williams led off with a double and scored on a one-out hit by Beresford. After stealing second, Beresford came home on a base hit by Liddle that pushed the Snappers' lead to 5-1.

Beloit blew the game open in the sixth. Making his Midwest League debut, Whitecaps' reliever Kevan Hess was victimized by a leadoff error before issuing three straight walks to force in a run. After Hess was removed, Beresford bounced a Zach Samuels offering inside the first base line for a two-run double that spotted the Snappers a comfortable 8-1 lead.

The Whitecaps scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth. Brantly reached base on a leadoff error and eventually scored on an infield single by Hernan Perez to arrive at the 8-2 final.

Victor Larez (6-9) suffered the loss for West Michigan, allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings of work.

The Whitecaps take Tuesday off before hitting the road for a three-game series at Classic Park in Lake County, starting with a 7:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday night. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (1-5, 5.91) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP Clayton Cook (5-6, 3.68) of the Captains. The 'Caps will return to Fifth Third Ballpark to start a seven-game homestand with a 7:00 p.m. start against the Dayton Dragons on Saturday, July 31, featuring post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS OUTLAST CAPTAINS FOR 12-INNING VICTORY
07/29/2010 11:53 PM ET

EASTLAKE, OH - Another night, another marathon at Classic Park.

After playing nearly four hours in a 16-14 slugfest on Wednesday night, the West Michigan Whitecaps outlasted the Lake County Captains for a 3-1, 12-inning win after three hours and 55 minutes on Thursday night.

West Michigan (11-21, 37-64) got seven shutout innings from the bullpen while five hurlers combined to hold Lake County (14-18, 58-43) to just one run on seven hits. The Whitecaps won consecutive games for the first time since July 9-10 and have a chance to earn their first series sweep of the season on Friday.

The game was tied at 1-1 when West Michigan mounted the decisive rally in the top of the 12th.

It started with a one-out hit by Jeff Rowland, who shrugged off an 0-for-5 night and dumped a flare-single into left. Michael Rockett followed with his third hit of the evening, a line-drive single to left-center that advanced Rowland to third base. After a pitching change, Corey Jones delivered the tie-breaking blow with a sacrifice fly and Wade Gaynor added a run-scoring single as the Whitecaps seized a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the frame, Shawn Teufel (1-1) worked around a leadoff walk by inducing a double play ball and a lineout to cap his two scoreless innings and clinch the victory. Jose Flores (0-1) suffered the loss for Lake County, charged with two runs on three hits over 2.1 frames.

Before the night stretched into extra innings, the story of the game was starting pitching.

Patrick Cooper made his Midwest League debut for the Whitecaps after being called up earlier in the day, filling the hole in the starting rotation created by Giovanni Soto's trade from the Tigers to the Indians. He went five strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits without figuring into the decision. The 20-year-old out of Bradley University, a 14th-round pick by the Tigers this summer, struck out four while walking two. He stranded five baserunners over his five innings of work, all of which were left in scoring position.

His opposition was Midwest League ERA-leader Matt Packer, who racked up seven strikeouts without issuing a walk over seven innings of work. The 22-year-old lefty gave up one run on five hits while lowering his league-best ERA to a miniscule 1.60.

The Captains broke up the scoreless tie with a rally in the fourth. After Casey Frawley drew a leadoff walk, Adam Abraham split the gap in right-center with a run-scoring double. Lake County went on to benefit from a walk and an error to load the bases with just one out, but Cooper induced a 6-4-3 double play from Greg Folgia to hold the deficit at 1-0.

Moments later, the Whitecaps evened the score. There was one out in the top of the fifth when Avisail Garcia sent a hard grounder through the left side of the infield for a single. Rob Brantly followed by cranking a 1-0 pitch to deep right field that banged high off the top of the wall, scoring Garcia on a double that made it a 1-1 game.

That was all the scoring until the 12th, when the 'Caps rallied for the dramatic late victory.

The Whitecaps wrap up a three-game series at Classic Park in Lake County with a 7:00 p.m. contest on Friday night. RHP Trevor Feeney (7-10, 3.49) is scheduled to start for the Whitecaps against RHP Brett Brach (2-5, 3.22) of the Captains.

'CAPS SCORE 14 UNANSWERED RUNS IN WILD COMEBACK WIN
07/29/2010 1:38 AM ET

EASTLAKE, OH - More than five hours after the scheduled first pitch, the West Michigan Whitecaps held on for a wild 16-14 win over the Lake County Captains in a game that started Wednesday night but ended Thursday morning at Classic Park.

The evening started with the news that Whitecaps All-Star Giovanni Soto had been traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Cleveland Indians for major league third baseman Jhonny Peralta. During the one hour, 18-minute rain delay that pushed back first pitch, Soto switched clubhouses to join his new team, the Captains.

When the game finally started, West Michigan (10-21, 36-64) rattled off 14 unanswered runs to overcome an 8-2 deficit, crossing the plate six times in the sixth before adding eight more runs during an eighth-inning rally. Lake County (14-17, 58-42) got huge nights from Casey Frawley, who homered twice, and Adam Abraham, who left the yard once, as each slugger drove in five runs apiece.

The two teams combined for 30 runs, 28 hits, 17 walks and four errors in a game that lasted three hours and 56 minutes after the lengthy rain delay. When the final out was recorded, the clock read 12:14 a.m. local time.

Despite a flurry of scoring early, the action began in earnest with the Whitecaps trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the sixth.

The rally started with the help of three walks that loaded the bases before six two-out runs eventually crossed the plate. Jeff Rowland and Corey Jones both legged out infield singles that pushed across one run each, while a wild pitch brought home a third runner to pull the 'Caps within 8-5. With runners at second and third, Wade Gaynor ripped a two-run double down the third base line to make it a one-run game. Tony Plagman followed with a bouncer to third that appeared it would end the inning, but an errant throw to first allowed Gaynor to round third for the game-tying run.

The 8-8 score remained until the eighth, when West Michigan took advantage of another series of walks to explode for another big inning. Three more free passes loaded the bases with one out before Plagman drove the go-ahead single through the left side. A walk and a single led to another run each before Clay Jones delivered a two-run double. After Hernan Perez added an RBI-single, Jamie Johnson capped the eight-run rally with a two-run triple that staked the Whitecaps to a 16-8 lead.

On a night where no lead seemed safe, the Captains plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth before Frawley's second home run of the night made it a 16-14 game in the ninth.

Jordan Pratt (1-1) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, making him the only one of the five Whitecaps pitchers - and nine combined pitchers - to see game action without giving up a run. Ryan Morris (0-2) suffered the loss for Lake County.

Hours earlier, after the rain finally cleared for the late first pitch, West Michigan started the scoring when Jeff Rowland blasted his first professional homer in the top of the first for a 1-0 Whitecaps lead.

Shortly thereafter, the Captains seized control.

In the bottom of the first, Abraham split the gap in right-center for a two-run double that put the Captains in front, 2-1. One inning later, consecutive doubles by Jason Smith and Greg Folgia added another run. Later in the second, there were two outs when Frawley slugged a three-run homer and Abraham's solo shot made it back-to-back home runs. After just two innings of play, Lake County found themselves with a sizeable 7-1 advantage.

As the game cruised along, the weather steadily worsened. The rain returned in the top of the fifth and continued to come down off-and-on over the middle innings while lightning periodically brightened up the night sky. The two clubs traded runs in the fifth inning before the Whitecaps pulled even with a six-run rally in the sixth, marking the beginning of what turned into a remarkable comeback win.

The Whitecaps play game two of a three-game series at Classic Park in Lake County with a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday night. After the Detroit Tigers' trade of LHP Giovanni Soto to the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday, it is unknown who will start for the Whitecaps against Midwest League ERA-leader Matt Packer (8-5, 1.62) of the Captains.

PEREZ HOMERS, FLASHES LEATHER TO LEAD 'CAPS TO SWEEP
07/30/2010 10:48 PM ET

EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps picked up their first series sweep of the season with a 1-0 win over the Lake County Captains on Friday night at Classic Park.

West Michigan (12-21, 38-64) got a tremendous performance from shortstop Hernan Perez, who provided stellar defense and the game-winning home run to help Trevor Feeney and Jordan Pratt throw a combined seven-hit shutout. Lake County (14-19, 58-44) was unable to support a stellar start by Brett Brach, who matched Feeney zero for zero until the Whitecaps broke through in the sixth.

As a scoreless tie cruised into the middle innings, Perez proved to be the difference maker on both sides of the ball.

With a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the fourth, the 19-year-old shortstop hustled to his right to get in front of a groundball in the hole, fielding and throwing to second in one motion to cut down the lead runner and help quiet the rally. One inning later, he raced back into the hole on a leadoff grounder to make a difficult backhanded play, planting and firing a one-hop strike to first for another impressive out.

In the bottom of the sixth, the talented Venezuelan teenager made his presence felt at the plate. Leading off the inning, Perez hammered a 1-2 pitch onto the bleachers beyond the left field fence for his third home run of the season, giving the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead.

As it turned out, his best was yet to come.

Perez flashed the leather one more time in the seventh, racing out to shallow center and making a tremendous over-the-shoulder stab to help stymie another Captains' rally. Later in the frame, Feeney struck out Jason Smit with a runner at third to preserve the 1-0 edge.

Things got even stickier in the eighth when Feeney gave way to reliever Jordan Pratt with runners at first and second and one away. After a groundout advanced the runners to second and third, the Captains' Casey Frawley fought off a jam-shot liner up the middle that appeared destined to sneak into center field and plate two runs. With the game on the line, Perez raced to his left to field the ball behind second base, throwing awkwardly on the run to retire Frawley and prevent the runs from scoring.

Feeney (8-10) earned the win with 7.1 scoreless innings, holding the Captains to six hits - all singles - without issuing a walk. He turned in his fourth consecutive quality start and 15th overall in his 22nd start of the year, lowering his ERA to 3.31.

Pratt (1) went the rest of the way, stranding a pair of runners in the eighth on his way to a five-out save. He allowed one hit and struck out one, earning his first professional save just two days after picking up the first win of his pro career.

Brach (2-6) suffered the tough luck loss for Lake County, giving up just one run on three hits over seven strong innings. He struck out three and walked one, but served up the leadoff homer by Perez in the sixth inning that decided the game.

The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark to start a seven-game homestand with a 7:00 p.m. start against the Dayton Dragons on Saturday, July 31. LHP Jared Wesson (3-1, 2.97) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Jacob Johnson (5-6, 4.67) of the Dragons in a game that will feature post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS WALK OFF WITH FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN
07/31/2010 10:23 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps continued to roll on Saturday night, kicking off a seven-game homestand with a thrilling 2-1, walk-off victory over the Dayton Dragons in front of a season-high crowd of 10,101 at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (13-21, 39-64) has won a season-best four consecutive games after completing their first series sweep of the season earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Dayton (8-25, 38-64) suffered their 10th straight loss and continued to sink into the Eastern Division cellar.

In a game that had been tied 1-1 since the second inning, Jeff Rowland sparked the game-winning rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Corey Jones initially tried to bunt him to second, but manager Joe DePastino switched up his signs and Rowland stole the bag instead. After working the count full, Jones delivered the game-winning blow with a double inside the first base line. As Rowland crossed the plate, the boisterous crowd erupted and the Whitecaps spilled out of the dugout to celebrate the 2-1 victory.

Matt Little (1-0) earned his first professional victory with a stellar relief outing. After struggling in his last appearance on Wednesday, the 31st-round pick of the University of Kentucky in 2010 retired all six of the men he faced on Saturday and struck out four over two perfect innings.

Doug Salinas (3-3) suffered the loss for Dayton, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth inning before allowing the winning hit in the ninth.

Though neither starting pitcher figured into the decision, both West Michigan's Jared Wesson and Dayton's Jacob Johnson were stellar on Saturday.

Wesson allowed just one run over a career-high seven innings of work, striking out six while yielding five hits and walking two. The first batter he faced doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, but the 24-year-old lefty was stifling the rest of the way and did not allow a hit after the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, Johnson was just as good. The Dragons' 19-year-old righty was touched for just one unearned run on six hits, fanning four without issuing a walk. His biggest mistake of the night was a two-base throwing error on a pickoff attempt in the second inning that led to the only run scored against him.

Before the walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth, both of the runs came in the early going.

University of Michigan product Ryan LaMarre put the Dragons in front, leading off the top of the first with a double and later scoring from third on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, West Michigan tied things up. After reaching base on a one-out single, Tony Plagman advanced all the way to third when Johnson's pickoff throw to first skipped into the bullpen. With two outs, Rob Brantly ripped a groundball single through the right side to plate Plagman for the 1-1 tie.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 1:00 p.m. start against the Dayton Dragons on Sunday, August 1. RHP Victor Larez (6-9, 4.71) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Ricky Bowen (2-4, 4.69) of the Dragons. Man's best friend is welcome at the park thanks to Dog Day presented by Ferris State University, featuring a dog bowl giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, the world's largest dog wash before the game, and appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog (WGVU) and entertainment act Jake the Diamond Dog. It will also be a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS RUN WINNING STREAK TO FIVE
08/01/2010 4:20 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps extended their season-high winning streak to five games with a 10-7 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (14-21, 40-64) seized control early with a four-run first inning and never looked back, scoring eight of their 10 runs with two outs. The Whitecaps seemed to have an answer for ever Dayton (8-26, 38-65) rally, as the Dragons lost their 11th straight game and fell for the 18th time in their last 19.

The Whitecaps jumped all over Dragons' starter Ricky Bowen in the first inning, mounting a two-out rally that featured five consecutive hits and four runs. It started with an infield single by Corey Jones, who moved to third base on a base hit by Wade Gaynor. Tony Plagman broke the scoreless tie with a groundball single up the middle and Avisail Garcia followed with a bouncing ball double past third to plate a second run. With runners at second and third, Hernan Perez capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle as West Michigan grabbed a 4-0 advantage.

Jamie Johnson made it 5-0 with a long solo homer in the second, but the Dragons got back in the game with a pair of their own longballs in the top of the third. Frank Pfister golfed a solo shot to left with one out that seemed harmless enough, but Did Gregorius and Henry Rodriguez reached base on consecutive two-out singles to keep the inning alive. Josh Garton cleaned up with a three-run homer, pulling Dayton to within 5-4.

West Michigan reasserted their lead in the bottom of the third. Jones led off with another single and scored on a double by Gaynor. After a pitching change, Garcia lined a run-scoring single to right that stretched the 'Caps lead to 7-4.

The margin was trimmed to 7-5 when the Whitecaps put together another two-out rally in the fifth. After setting down the first two batters of the inning, Dragons pitcher Jason Braun hit a batter and issued a walk before being removed from the game. Jimmy Gulliver greeted the new hurler with a double to right and Luis Alberto Sanz added a two-run single as the lead swelled to 10-5.

Dayton scratched across single runs in the sixth and seventh to pull to within 10-7, but the West Michigan bullpen held on from there.

After Whitecaps starter Victor Larez was removed following 4.2 innings of work, Zach Samuels (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen with 2.1 innings of two-run baseball. Richard Zumaya then came in for a scoreless eighth inning before Kenny Faulk (6) struck out the side in the ninth for the save.

Bowen (2-5) suffered the loss for the Dragons, roughed up for seven runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with the finale of a three-game series against the Dayton Dragons at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 2. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (1-5, 7.11) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Clayton Schunick (N/A) of the Dragons. Fans that bring their church or community bulletin to the ballpark will be offered half-price box and reserved seats thanks to an All Faiths Night presented by JQ 99. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS MISS OUT ON SWEEP AS WIN-STREAK ENDS AT FIVE
08/02/2010 10:01 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Bidding for a second consecutive series sweep, the West Michigan Whitecaps could not hold on to a late lead in a 2-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons on Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (14-22, 41-64) took a lead in the first inning and stayed in front until the seventh, when the Dragons rallied to halt the Whitecaps' winning streak at a season-high five games. Dayton (9-26, 38-66) ended their losing streak at 11 games, one shy of what would have been a franchise record.

The Whitecaps did not waste any time reaching the scoreboard. Jamie Johnson led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and moved to second on a one-out walk to Corey Jones. Two pitches later, Wade Gaynor smacked a liner to left-center for a run-scoring single and a 1-0 lead.

That score held until the Dragons evened things up with one swing of the bat in the seventh. Henry Rodriguez led off the inning by turning on a 1-0 pitch and blasting a long home run to right that cleared the Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Deck and tied the score at 1-1.

One inning later, Frank Pfister started the Dragons' go-ahead rally with a one out single. He was later thrown out trying to go first-to-third on a base hit by Ryan LaMarre, with LaMarre advancing to scoring position on the throw to third. With two outs and LaMarre at second in a tie ballgame, a battle of an at-bat ensued between Whitecaps' reliever Jordan Pratt and Dragons' shortstop Didi Gregorius.

Ultimately, Gregoruis rolled a hard groundball through the middle of the infield on the 13th pitch of the sequence, scoring LaMarre for the decisive 2-1 lead.

Despite having blown more saves than any other team in the Midwest League, Dayton was able to hang on thanks to Doug Salinas (3). The 21-year-old reliever mowed right through the top six batters in the West Michigan lineup during the eighth and ninth innings. He struck out five of the six batters he faced, including all three men in the middle of the lineup to clinch the save in the ninth.

Pedro Villarreal (4-7) earned the win for Dayton with a scoreless seventh inning out of the bullpen.

Pratt (1-2) suffered the loss after earning his first professional win and save in his previous two appearances, allowing one run on three hits in the eighth.

The late action overshadowed a game dominated by starting pitching early.

Luis Angel Sanz turned in his best performance in a Whitecaps uniform, carrying a two-hit shutout into the seventh and allowing just one run on three hits over seven innings of work. His counterpart, Clayton Shunick, tossed six strong innings and gave up one run on five hits in his Midwest League debut for Dayton.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with a visit from the Great Lakes Loons at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3. RHP Patrick Cooper (0-0, 1.80) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Greg Wilborn (N/A) of the Loons in a game that will be preceded by a concert from Christian rock group NewWorldSon. All-you-can-eat food packages are available on a Fat Tuesday, while seniors ages 50 and over are eligible for half-priced box and reserved tickets thanks to a Bob Evans Senior Night. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS FALL DESPITE SUCCESSFUL REHAB FOR INGE
08/03/2010 11:16 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - An excited crowd of 6,075 came out to watch rehabbing Tigers' third baseman Brandon Inge and the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, but the Great Lakes Loons spoiled the party by holding on for a 7-6 win in the opening game of a four-game set.

After falling behind in the middle innings, West Michigan (14-23, 40-66) fought back late and put the potential game-tying run at second before Great Lakes (29-8, 72-34) secured the final out.

The story of the day was Inge's rehabilitation assignment, which came barely two weeks after he suffered a broken left hand on July 19 that was expected to sideline him for 4-6 weeks. Inge went 2-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and a pair of strikeouts in a return to his old stomping grounds. The 33-year-old spent the 1999 season with the 'Caps as a young minor league catcher, and returned to Fifth Third Ballpark in 2001 for a brief rehab stint during his rookie season in the Major Leagues.

Inge brought the crowd to its feet early with a run-scoring double in the first inning and added a two-base hit in the third that keyed another rally. After Michael Rockett advanced to third base on the double, Wade Gaynor followed with a sacrifice fly as the Whitecaps took a 2-1 lead.

In the middle innings, however, the Loons took control.

Bryant Hernandez led off the top of the fifth with a single and came around to score to even the game at 2-2.

Great Lakes went back to work in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one away, Hernandez singled up the middle to drive home the go-ahead run. Nick Buss followed with a two-run triple - part of a 3-for-3 night that included three RBI - and promptly scored on a base hit by Angelo Songco for a 6-2 advantage.

West Michigan battled back from there.

Hernan Perez, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI on the night, checked in with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth that brought the Whitecaps to within 6-4. After Great Lakes added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, Perez delivered another run-scoring hit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 7-5 ballgame.

In the ninth, Rockett was at second base with two outs when Gaynor drilled a run-scoring double off the wall in right to trim the deficit to one run. Avisail Garcia struck out on the next three pitches, however, as the Loons hung on for a 7-6 win.

Greg Wilborn (1-0) earned the victory for Great Lakes in his Midwest League debut, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits over 5.2 innings. Steve Ames (10) pitched the ninth for the save.

Kevan Hess (0-1) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps, allowing three runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning during the Loons' game-changing rally in the sixth.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with a visit from the Great Lakes Loons at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4. RHP Trevor Feeney (8-10, 3.31) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Ryan Christenson (0-0, 4.91) of the Loons. The Whitecaps will be wearing special purple jerseys as the Van Andel Institute and Warner, Norcross and Judd present Community for a Cure Purple Games to Benefit Cancer Research. There will also be a special appearance by entertainment act BirdZerk!, post-game fireworks, and a post-game softball home run derby by the Long Haul Bombers. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

EARLY DEFICIT TOO TALL TO OVERCOME
08/04/2010 10:14 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps fell behind early and never recovered in a 4-2 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday evening at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (14-24, 40-67) has dropped three straight games since having their season-high five-game winning streak snapped on Monday. Meanwhile, Great Lakes (30-8, 73-34) won their 30th game of the half to improve the best record in all of full-season professional baseball.

The Loons jumped out to an early lead by pounding out seven hits in the first two innings. Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Gorman Erickson delivered consecutive run-scoring singles with two outs in the first, and Rafael Ynoa added an RBI-single in the second for a 3-0 advantage.

Whitecaps' starter Trevor Feeney (8-11) settled in from there. The 24-year-old righty bounced back from the rocky start to retire 16 of the 17 batters he faced after Ynoa's run-scoring hit in the second. Feeney set down nine in a row before a two-out double in the fifth, then retired the last seven he faced to close his outing.

Unfortunately, the damage was done. Despite the quality start, Feeney suffered the loss thanks to three runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk.

West Michigan scored their only runs in the fifth inning against Great Lakes starter Ryan Christenson. Christenson retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced through four innings before Avisail Garcia led off the fifth with a single through the left side. Alexis Espinoza followed by drilling a liner that split the gap in right-center for a run-scoring triple. Two outs later, a base hit by Jamie Johnson plated Espinoza to pull the Whitecaps to within a 3-2 score.

That was as close as the 'Caps would get.

West Michigan stranded runners at second and third in the sixth as the Loons bullpen tossed four scoreless innings. Edwin Contreras threw the first three frames before Luis Vasquez struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save of the year.

The Loons added a key insurance in the top of the ninth on an RBI-double by Brian Ruggiano that gave Great Lakes all the cushion they needed.

Christenson (1-0) earned the win with five solid innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out four without issuing a walk.

The Whitecaps wind down a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with the third game of a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 5. LHP Jared Wesson (3-1, 2.72) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Josh Wall (7-4, 3.40) of the Loons. In addition to an Altogas Thrifty Thursday, it will be '70's Night with a Youth Jerseys for the first 500 kids under 12 and a post-game concert from Pretzel Logic. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS SHUT OUT LOONS FOR 6-0 WIN
08/05/2010 11:05 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps threw a combined shutout and pulled away late during a 6-0 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (15-24, 41-67) got a 3-for-3 effort from Jeff Rowland and three RBI from Corey Jones, including a crucial two-run single in the seventh that helped the Whitecaps cement the victory. Great Lakes (30-9, 73-35), the best team record-wise in all of full-season affiliated baseball, was held scoreless for just the fourth time all season.

The Whitecaps did not waste any time taking a lead on Thursday night. Jamie Johnson drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced to third when Hernan Perez sliced a single to right-center. Corey Jones followed with a bouncing ball that skipped past the first baseman, scoring Johnson and moving Perez to third. Wade Gaynor then ripped a hot smash that caromed off the third baseman and into left, allowing Perez to cross the plate for a 2-0 advantage.

That lead stood up thanks to a resilient effort from the West Michigan pitching staff.

Jared Wesson (4-1) started and earned the victory with five shutout innings, overcoming four walks in part thanks to five strikeouts. Zach Samuels followed with two frames of relief before Kenny Faulk finished the shutout in the ninth. Although the Loons benefitted from seven hits and five walks, all seven hits were singles and the Whitecaps trio forced Great Lakes to strand nine runners on the evening.

It was still a two-run game in the seventh when West Michigan pulled away.

The Whitecaps loaded the bases with nobody out but nearly squandered the rally. Perez struck out swinging for the first out, and pinch-runner Michael Rockett was caught trying to steal home on a botched suicide squeeze for the second. Later in the at-bat, however, a wild pitch advanced runners to second and third for Jones. The seventh-round pick out of Cal St.-Fullerton battled the count full before salvaging the rally with a two-run single to left that double the lead to 4-0.

West Michigan added two more in the eighth on a throwing error and a run-scoring single by Rowland, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Thanks to the four late runs, the 'Caps pulled away for the 6-0 victory.

Josh Wall (7-5) suffered the loss for Great Lakes, charged with four runs on eight hits and four walks over seven innings of work.

Rehabbing Detroit Tigers' star Carlos Guillen joins the Whitecaps for the final game of a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday, August 6, at 7:00 p.m. against the Great Lakes Loons. RHP Victor Larez (6-9, 4.96) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Matt Magill (6-2, 3.57) of the Loons. In addition to Guillen's rehab appearance, former Tiger great Mike Henneman will also be on hand as part of the Tiger Friday series. The first 1,000 fans will receive Tigers hats and the crowd will be treated to a post-game fireworks show presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

BRANTLY'S WALK-OFF CAPS HOMESTAND IN STYLE
08/06/2010 10:19 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps wrapped up their seven-game homestand with a bang on Friday night, as Rob Brantly's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth delivered a 2-1 victory over the Great Lakes Loons in front of a crowd of 8,510 at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (16-24, 42-67) split the four-game set with the Loons and finished the homestand at 4-3, recovering from a blown save in the top of the ninth to win in dramatic fashion. Still boasting the best overall record in full-season affiliated baseball, Great Lakes (30-10, 73-36) suffered just their 10th loss since the All-Star break.

After two fantastic starting pitching performances stole the show through the first eight innings, the game was tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Wade Gaynor sparked the game-winning rally by drawing a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw to first. Tony Plagman also drew a walk, but Avisail Garcia popped out to shallow right for the second out of the inning. With men at first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Brantly grounded a 2-1 pitch up the middle that snuck past the shortstop, scoring Gaynor for the 2-1 victory.

Kenny Faulk (4-4) earned the win despite blowing the save in the top of the ninth, while Loons' reliever Steve Smith (3-5) suffered the loss in the bottom half of the frame.

Prior to the late drama, the game was marked by excellent starting pitching.

West Michigan's Victor Larez carried a four-hit shutout into the ninth, but was removed after walking the first batter of the final frame. That runner eventually came around to score, preventing what would have been a second consecutive shutout victory for the 'Caps. Larez was charged with one run on four hits over eight innings of work, striking out one and walking three on 93 pitches.

Matt Magill countered with eight strong innings of his own for Great Lakes, holding the Whitecaps to one run on four hits while fanning three and walking three.

The Whitecaps' only run against Magill came in the bottom of the first. Corey Jones reached base on a one-out walk and moved to second when Carlos Guillen, in town on a rehab assignment, drew a walk. Gaynor then looped a single to left-center that plated Jones for a quick 1-0 lead.

That score lasted all the way until the ninth. Angelo Songco drew the leadoff walk that chased Larez from the game and was promptly removed for pinch runner Stetson Banks. A single by Blake Smith advanced Banks to third. Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed by drilling a double to left-center that scored Banks for the game-tying run, but West Michigan executed a perfect relay to the plate to gun down Smith.

Reliever Kenny Faulk struck out the next two batters to hold the score at 1-1 and give the 'Caps a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth.

The dramatic conclusion overshadowed the rehab appearance by Detroit Tigers' second baseman Carlos Guillen, who played six innings and drew a walk in the first inning that helped West Michigan rally for an early run. After grounding into a double play in the third, the 34-year-old from Venezuela reached base on a fielder's choice groundout in the sixth. Guillen is expected to play with the 'Caps again on Saturday night in Dayton and possibly Sunday before rejoining the Tigers when he is eligible to come off the Disabled List on Monday.

Rehabbing Detroit Tigers' star Carlos Guillen and the Whitecaps hit the road for a seven-game trip that kicks off with a 7:07 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night against the Dayton Dragons. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (1-5, 6.31) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Tim Crabbe (2-3, 3.86) of the Dragons. The Whitecaps will be back at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday, August 14, for a seven-day homestand that starts with a 7:00 p.m. game against the South Bend Silver Hawks. The first 1,000 kids ages 14-and-under will receive capes on Superhero Night presented by Charter Communications, and the evening will culminate with a tremendous fireworks display thanks to Farm Bureau Insurance. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS OUTLAST DRAGONS FOR WILD WIN
08/08/2010 12:50 AM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps dug deep and found a way to win on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field, outlasting the Dayton Dragons for a 6-5 victory in a game that lasted 11 innings and saw both teams overcome deficits with two outs in the ninth inning.

West Michigan (17-24, 43-67) started the day with a five-and-a-half hour bus ride from Grand Rapids to Dayton and ended it with a four-hour, one-minute ballgame to pull within three games of an Eastern Division playoff berth. Dayton (10-30, 40-69) carried a lead into the ninth and appeared on the verge of snapping their home losing streak, only to watch it slip away for an 18th consecutive home loss.

After the Whitecaps jumped out to a 3-0 edge by the middle of the fourth, the Dragons rallied for four unanswered runs and led by a 4-3 score heading into the top of the ninth.

Dayton reliever Blaine Howell was dominant, retiring eight of the first nine men he faced before Jamie Johnson came to the plate with two outs in the ninth. Down to their last gasp, the Whitecaps had Jimmy Gulliver at first base with two away and an 0-2 count on Johnson. The 'Caps scrappy leadoff hitter followed with a bouncing ball past the third baseman and down the left field line, but the play took another twist when the ball snuck past the left fielder Josh Garton. Thanks to the double and error, both runners came all the way around to score unearned runs and West Michigan suddenly seized a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Dragons returned the favor. Whitecaps reliever Matt Little retired the first batter of the frame but then issued three consecutive walks. A pickoff helped limit the rally to men at first and second with two outs, but Ryan LaMarre lined a single to left that plated Henry Rodriguez to tie the score at 5-5.

That margin remained until the top of the 11th, when singles by Jeff Rowland and Gulliver left runners at the corners with nobody out. Luis Alberto Sanz followed with a sacrifice fly to right, putting the 'Caps ahead by a 6-5 score.

Things did not get any easier in the bottom of the inning. After throwing a scoreless 10th, Antonio Cruz retired the first two batters of the 11th before a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases. With the bags packed, two away and the game on the line, Cruz struck out Tommy Nurre to end the marathon and secure the 6-5 victory.

Cruz (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless frames, while Kevin Arico (0-3) suffered the loss.

The early innings were filled with just as much drama. Johnson led off the game with a solo homer as the Whitecaps scored twice in the first and once in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage. Shortly thereafter, the Dragons' comeback began.

West Michigan held a 3-1 lead in the fifth when both teams had runners gunned down at the plate. Dayton did the rest of their damage with key two-out hits in the sixth and seventh innings. With two away and men at second and third in the sixth, Nurre lined a single to center that scored both runners and tied the game at 3-3. In the seventh, Didi Gregorius reached base on a two-out single and proceeded to steal second, putting himself in position to score when Henry Rodriguez followed with a line-drive single to right that gave the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

That lead held until the late action unfolded in the ninth.

One of the subplots to Saturday night's contest was the second game of Carlos Guillen's rehab stint with the club. The Detroit Tigers' second baseman went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles before leaving the game after the top of the seventh inning. It remains to be seen whether he will play a third game with West Michigan on Sunday before he is expected to rejoin the Tigers on Monday.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game road trip with game two of a four-game series at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday night against the Dayton Dragons. RHP Patrick (0-0, 1.80) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Tim Crabbe (2-3, 3.86) of the Dragons.

'CAPS ESTABLISH FRANCHISE RECORD WITH 21-10 BLOWOUT
08/08/2010 9:00 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps established a new franchise record for runs scored in a ballgame on Sunday, routing the Dayton Dragons, 21-10, at Fifth Third Field to pull within two games of a potential playoff berth.

Every player in the West Michigan (18-24, 44-67) lineup recorded a hit and scored a run and eight of the nine position players drove in at least one run. The 21 runs scored in a single ballgame surpassed the previous franchise high of 20, a feat first accomplished on May 5, 1995, and then again on July 5, 2009.

Michael Rockett led the way with a 4-for-7 night, becoming the first Whitecap to smack a grand slam or drive in five runs in a ballgame this season, as well as knocking home the record-setting run in the ninth inning. Corey Jones also went 4-for-7 with two doubles and four RBI.

Meanwhile, Dayton (10-31, 40-70) issued 13 walks and committed five errors while suffering their 19th consecutive home loss and falling for the 23rd time in their last 26 games.

The Whitecaps jumped all over the Dragons from the first at-bat of the game, sending 15 men to the plate during a nine-run first inning. Six different 'Caps registered both a run scored and an RBI during the frame, as six walks and a pair of errors combined with five West Michigan hits to power the rally.

It began with a nine-pitch at-bat that resulted in a walk to Jamie Johnson, who moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Jeff Rowland. Corey Jones sent a low liner into center that scored Johnson, and the rally was on from there. Tony Plagman, Rob Brantly and Johnson - in his second plate appearance of the inning - all went on to draw walks with the bags packed, while Clay Jones legged out a bases-loaded infield single that also drove home a run. After a pitching change, Rowland cleared the bases with a two-run double in his second at-bat, and a third run scored on the play after a fielding error in left. Corey Jones followed with a double of his own to right, plating Rowland for a seemingly comfortable 9-0 lead.

When Andrew Means led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer, however, the crowd knew it was in store for another wild game. The Dragons obliged, staging a valiant comeback over the middle innings.

In the bottom of the third, Dayton strung together four consecutive run-scoring hits with two outs as five runs crossed the plate. The big blow was a two-run single by Cameron Satterwhite, who then scored on a double by Tommy Nurre as the rally pulled the Dragons to within 9-6.

West Michigan answered with three runs in the top of the sixth. Brantly led off with a single while a pair of walks helped load the bases. A wild pitch brought home the first run and Corey Jones added a two-out, two-run single for a 12-6 advantage.

The Dragons plated four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Ryan LaMarre's two-run double keyed the rally and an RBI-single by Cameron Satterwhite made it a 12-10 game. After trailing by a 9-0 margin, Dayton had trimmed a once-sizeable deficit to just two runs.

That is when Zach Samuels (2-0) came in out of the bullpen to stop the bleeding. The righty from California ended the fourth-inning rally by recording the last out of the frame and went on to throw 3.1 innings of shutout baseball for the victory. Richard Zumaya and Kenny Faulk added scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth as the Whitecaps bullpen held the Dragons off the board the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, West Michigan continued the offensive onslaught to put the game out of reach.

In the top of the sixth, two walks and an error loaded the bases again before Plagman drew a free pass to force in a run. Rockett followed by clubbing the Whitecaps first grand slam of the season to increase the advantage to 17-10.

Jimmy Gulliver led off the seventh with a double and Rockett opened the eighth with a triple, as both players came around to score for a 19-10 lead. With Dragons' third baseman Frank Pfister pitching in the ninth, three more hits and two more errors led to another pair of runs. A single by Rockett plated Wade Gaynor to cap the afternoon's scoring, securing the 21-10 victory as well as the franchise record.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game road trip with game three of a four-game series at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night against the Dayton Dragons. RHP Trevor Feeney (8-11, 3.34) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Daniel Corcino (N/A) of the Dragons.

FEENEY LEADS WHITECAPS TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN
08/09/2010 11:11 PM ET

DAYON, OH - Trevor Feeney twirled a sixth consecutive quality start and the West Michigan Whitecaps extended their winning streak to five games with an 8-3 victory over the reeling Dayton Dragons on Monday night at Fifth Third Field.

West Michigan (19-24, 45-67) has won 10 of their last 13 to pull within just one game of a potential playoff berth, and will look to complete a four-game sweep in the series finale on Tuesday. Dayton's (10-32, 40-71) woes continued with a 20th consecutive home loss as the Dragons have dropped 24 of their last 27 games overall.

Feeney (9-11) pitched into the eighth inning without issuing a walk to continue an impressive streak of 31.1 consecutive innings and four starts without issuing a free pass. He scattered nine hits while allowing three runs - two earned - over 7.1 frames, notching notch his 17th quality start in 24 outings and increasing his league-leading total of 155.2 innings pitched. Feeney struck out three and induced a pair of double plays in the victory.

Still, the Whitecaps trailed 2-0 before the offense came to life in the top of the sixth.

Rob Brantly was at first with one out when Jeff Rowland split the gap in right-center field for a run-scoring triple. Two pitches later, Rowland trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Hernan Perez that tied the score at 2-2.

In the seventh, West Michigan put together another rally that started with a four-pitch walk to Michael Rockett. An error and an infield single by Wade Gaynor loaded the bases with nobody out. After an infield pop-out, a wild pitch allowed Rockett to race home for the go-ahead run and Avisail Garcia lined a two-run single to center that gave the Whitecaps a 5-2 cushion.

Dayton pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth, but West Michigan answered with a three-spot to put the game away in the top of the ninth. Corey Jones started the rally with a walk and Gaynor followed with a ground-rule double. Tony Plagman lined an RBI-single up the middle and Garcia drove home a run on a fielder's choice groundout. Rowland capped the scoring with an opposite-field double to left, plating Garcia to put the finishing touches on the 8-3 victory.

Jordan Pratt (2) finished off the Dragons to earn the save, stranding a runner at third base in the eighth and retiring all five batters he faced with three strikeouts.

Junior Martinez (1-3) suffered the loss out of the Dayton bullpen, surrendering three runs - two earned - on two hits and two walks in two innings.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game road trip with the finale of a four-game series at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night against the Dayton Dragons. LHP Jared Wesson (4-1, 2.45) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Ricky Bowen (2-6, 6.13) of the Dragons in a battle between former Mississippi State teammates. 'CAPS BUST OUT THE BROOMS, WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT
08/10/2010 11:18 PM ET

DAYON, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps completed a four-game series sweep with their sixth straight win on Tuesday night, out-hitting the Dayton Dragons, 17-4, during a 9-2 victory at Fifth Third Field.

West Michigan (20-24, 46-67) won their seventh straight road game and remains just one game out of a potential playoff spot with 26 to play, while Dayton (10-33, 40-72) continued to struggle with their 21st consecutive home loss and fell to 3-25 in their last 28 games.

Hungry for the series sweep, the Whitecaps came out swinging on Tuesday night. The top three batters in the order - Jeff Rowland, Michael Rockett and Corey Jones - all had three-hit games and went a combined 9-for-15 with four extra-base hits.

West Michigan seized control from the outset and led wire-to-wire.

Rockett and Corey Jones lined back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first before Wade Gaynor bounced into a fielder's choice groundout to second, but Rockett was granted home when the throw to first from shortstop Didi Gregorius sailed into the seats. Avisail Garcia followed with a run-scoring single to right that plated Gaynor for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Rockett lined a double to center that drove home Hernan Perez to push the advantage to 3-0.

The score was 3-1 when the 'Caps blew the game open in the fourth. The first five batters that came to the plate all hit safely, starting with singles by Perez and Rowland that put men at the corners. Perez was promptly given home plate on a balk, while Rockett slapped a line-drive double down the right field line to score Rowland. After a single by Corey Jones advanced Rockett to third, Gaynor became the first Whitecap to reach 60 RBI this season with a run-scoring single to left that gave West Michigan a comfortable 6-1 lead.

Jared Wesson (5-1) battled through five innings to win his third consecutive decision, holding the Dragons to one run on three hits. The tall left-hander struck out five and walked three, stranding seven Dayton baserunners as he consistently worked out of trouble.

Matt Little followed with three solid frames out of the bullpen before Antonio Cruz chipped in with a scoreless ninth to complete the combined four-hitter.

In the fifth, Clay Jones smacked a leadoff double that one-hopped the wall in center, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Perez for a 7-1 margin.

It was a 7-2 ballgame when the Whitecaps put on the finishing touches in the ninth. Rob Brantly started the rally with a leadoff double, extending his hitting streak to 13 games in his final plate appearance of the night. One out later, Alexis Espinoza drilled a triple to the wall in right-center and Perez added a run-scoring single as the 'Caps cemented the 9-2 victory.

Ricky Bowen (2-7) suffered the loss after getting knocked around for seven runs - six earned - on 13 hits over 4.2 innings of work.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game road trip with a three-game series in Bowling Green that starts at 7:35 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. RHP Victor Larez (6-9, 4.65) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Aaron Dott (2-3, 4.83) of the Hot Rods in the series opener. WHITECAPS DELIVER NO. 200 FOR DEPASTINO
08/12/2010 12:09 AM ET

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps continued their winning ways with a season-high seventh straight victory on Wednesday night, delivering manager Joe DePastino his 200th career win with a 5-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark.

West Michigan (21-24, 47-67) has won 12 of their last 15 games overall and eight in a row on the road, while Bowling Green (20-25, 51-63) fell for the eighth time in their last 12 games. It was the opener of a three-game set riddled with playoff implications as the two clubs entered play tied and one game behind Lansing - who also won on Wednesday - in the race for the Eastern Division's second-half Wild Card spot.

The victory improved DePastino to 200-191 (.512) in his third season at the helm for West Michigan. He becomes just the third skipper in Whitecaps history to reach the 200-win mark, joining the likes of Bruce Fields, who collected 331 wins from 1997-2000, and Matt Walbeck, who won 231 games from 2004-2006.

The Hot Rods struck in the bottom of the first thanks to a long solo homer by Brett Nommensen that banged off the scoreboard in right field for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Whitecaps answered.

Jeff Rowland sparked the rally with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by Luis Alberto Sanz. Jamie Johnson followed with the game-tying blow, lining a double to right-center that plated Rowland and moved Sanz to third. After Michael Rockett's run-scoring groundout pushed across Sanz for the go-ahead score, Corey Jones smacked a run-scoring double to center for a 3-1 advantage.

In the sixth, West Michigan added another run. A pair of singles combined with a hit batsman to load the bases with one out for leadoff man Jamie Johnson. Johnson, among the league leaders in walks and on-base percentage, coaxed a free pass to force in a run. Though Rockett bounced into an inning-ending double play on the very next pitch, the Whitecaps lead increased to 4-1.

Bowling Green did not go down without a fight, making things interesting with single runs in the seventh and eighth to pull to within 4-3.

The Hot Rods continued their eighth-inning threat by loading the bases, placing the potential game-tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with two outs. Reliever Kenny Faulk responded by striking out Thomas Francisco to leave all three runners stranded and retain a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning.

Following a pair of two-out walks in the top of the ninth, Tony Plagman pulled a run-scoring double inside the first base line to provide the final 5-3 cushion.

Victor Larez (7-9) earned the win with six solid innings, bouncing back from the first-inning homer to retire 12 of the next 13 batters that he faced. The 23-year-old from Venezuela limited the Hot Rods to one run on four hits while fanning two and walking one. At the back end, Faulk (7) notched a four-out save after pitching out of trouble in the eighth and working around a two-out walk in the ninth.

Aaron Dott (2-4) suffered the loss for Bowling Green, charged with three runs on four hits over four innings in the start.

The Whitecaps continue a seven-game road trip with game two of a three-game series in Bowling Green at 7:35 p.m. ET on Thursday night. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (1-5, 6.16) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Kyle Lobstein (7-5, 4.44) of the Hot Rods. WIN-STREAK REACHES EIGHT AS 'CAPS KEEP ROLLING
08/13/2010 12:01 AM ET

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 victory against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

In addition to the longest Whitecaps' winning streak since 2006, West Michigan (22-24, 48-67) has now tied a franchise record with nine consecutive road wins. A victory in the road trip finale against Bowling Green (20-26, 51-64) on Friday would complete a perfect seven-game trip while marking a third consecutive road sweep.

The Whitecaps were held without a hit through the first three innings before local favorite Wade Gaynor powered the go-ahead rally.

Michael Rockett led off with a double before Gaynor - a Kentucky native who played his college ball at Bowling Green's Western Kentucky University - lined a 2-2 pitch down the right field line. The ball bounced just inside the foul line and rolled into the corner as Gaynor raced around the bases for an RBI-triple. Two pitches later, Avisail Garcia brought him home with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

As it turned out, that was all the offense the Whitecaps would need as a trio of West Michigan pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Only three Hot Rods baserunners reached scoring position, all of which were aided by stolen bases or wild pitches to get past first base.

Whitecaps' starter Luis Angel Sanz (2-5) led the effort with six shutout innings, allowing just two singles to earn his first win since July 10. He issued three walks but struck out five to set the tone.

West Michigan added to the lead in the seventh. Jeff Rowland extended his hitting streak to eight games with a one-out single that chased Bowling Green starter Kyle Lobstein from the contest. On the first pitch thrown by reliever Scott Shuman, Rolwand stole second to reach scoring position. That set the stage for Jamie Johnson to drive home a two-out run with a groundball single to right for a 3-0 edge.

Bowling Green broke up the shutout with a single run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Whitecaps answered with an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Rob Brantly extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a leadoff single, tying the team-high established by Gaynor from July 5-19. After stealing second, he came around to score on a two-out single by Hernan Perez to reach the 4-1 final.

After two relief innings from Antonio Cruz, closer Kenny Faulk (8) came in for the ninth inning and earned his second save in as many nights. The lefty from Georgia seamlessly pitched around a leadoff error to retire the next three batters in order, turning in his ninth consecutive scoreless appearance.

Lobstein (7-6) suffered the loss for Bowling Green despite a solid outing on his 21st birthday. The lefty did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and turned in a quality start. He was charged with three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking one.

The Whitecaps wrap up a seven-game road trip with the finale of a three-game series in Bowling Green at 8:05 p.m. ET on Friday night. RHP Patrick Cooper (0-0, 5.68) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Albert Suarez (0-3, 5.79) of the Hot Rods. The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark for a seven-day homestand that starts with a 7:00 p.m. game against the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday, August 14. The first 1,000 kids ages 14-and-under will receive capes on Superhero Night presented by Charter Communications, and the evening will culminate with a tremendous fireworks display thanks to Farm Bureau Insurance. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS MAKE MORE HISTORY WITH PERFECT ROAD TRIP
08/14/2010 12:07 AM ET

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps continued to rewrite the record books on Friday night, holding on for a 4-2 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark.

After setting a new franchise mark with 21 runs in a game on Sunday, West Michigan (23-24, 49-67) won a franchise-record 10th consecutive road game on Friday thanks to a third straight road sweep. The victory also completed the longest undefeated road trip in franchise history at a perfect 7-0. The Whitecaps have won nine straight games overall, the longest winning streak since 1999 when a franchise-best 12-game streak was established.

Keeping the streak alive was not easy, as a scrappy Bowling Green (20-27, 51-65) team nearly pulled off an improbable comeback in the bottom of the ninth. After throwing a combined three-hitter in Thursday's win, the 'Caps pitching staff carried a three-hit shutout and a 4-0 lead into the final frame on Friday.

Reliever Richard Zumaya had already thrown 1.2 innings of relief when Ty Morrison doubled against him to lead off the inning. Following a walk to Cody Rogers, Brett Nommensen added a double to right that scored Morrison and left runners at second and third with nobody out.

With closer Kenny Faulk having notched saves on the previous two nights, West Michigan manager Joe DePastino called on Jordan Pratt to get out of the jam. Pratt induced a pair of groundouts that left Bowling Green trailing 4-2 with a runner at third and two away. A walk to Julio Cedeno put the potential game-tying run on base for Kyle Spraker, who worked the count full before smacking a hot smash to the right side of the infield.

But second baseman Jimmy Gulliver was up to the task, snagging the one-hopper, spinning around, and firing to first for the final out.

Pratt (3) earned the save, while starter Patrick Cooper (1-0) was rewarded for a strong outing with his first Midwest League win. The 20-year-old right-hander tossed 6.2 scoreless frames and gave up just two hits.

The Whitecaps reached the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, scoring first for the seventh time in their last nine ballgames. It started with a leadoff single by Wade Gaynor, who promptly stole second base to reach scoring position. Tony Plagman followed with a base hit up the middle that scored Gaynor for the early 1-0 lead.

West Michigan doubled the advantage with a run in the fifth, sparked by a leadoff error that allowed Alexis Espinoza to reach base. Espinoza went first-to-third on a hit-and-run single by Hernan Perez on the very next pitch, and it was just two pitches later that he raced home to score when Gulliver bounced into a double play. Despite an inning in which Hot Rods' reliever Tyree Hayes threw just six pitches - all for strikes - the 'Caps were able to push the edge to 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bowling Green mounted a serious threat as a walk, single and sacrifice bunt gave the Hot Rods men at second and third with one out. Cooper responded by striking out Robi Estrada swinging before inducing an inning-ending grounder from Tomas Francisco, wiggling out of the jam and preserving the shutout.

West Michigan padded the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. After Perez doubled home Espinoza with a liner down the left field line in the seventh, a two-base hit from Avisail Garcia in the eighth plated Jamie Johnson to provide a 4-0 cushion.

The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday, August 14, to start a seven-day homestand with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch against the South Bend Silver Hawks. RHP Trevor Feeney (9-11, 3.30) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Adam Worthington (3-4, 4.81) of the Silver Hawks.

WINNING STREAK REACHES 10 WITH 21-HIT BLOWOUT
08/14/2010 11:02 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - One night after finishing a perfect seven-game road trip, the West Michigan Whitecaps treated their home fans to a show on Saturday by pounding out a season-high 21 hits in front of a season-high crowd of 10,312 during a 12-3 blowout of the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (24-24, 50-67) won their 10th consecutive game to achieve the second double-digit winning streak in franchise history, checking in just two games shy of the franchise-best 12-game stretch established in 1999. The 'Caps have won 15 of their last 18 ballgames to improve their second-half record to .500 while pulling even with Lansing in the race for the Eastern Division's second-half Wild Card spot.

South Bend (20-27, 50-65) entered play on the heels of a series sweep against first-place Great Lakes, but the Whitecaps quickly asserted control.

After taking the lead on a run-scoring single by Hernan Perez with two outs in the second, West Michigan sent 12 men to the plate during a seven-run explosion in the third inning.

There was one out when the Whitecaps strung together five consecutive hits, powered by consecutive run-scoring doubles from Wade Gaynor and Tony Plagman. Rob Brantly, Perez and Corey Jones also contributed run-scoring singles as the 'Caps used eight hits and took advantage of a pair of errors to seize an 8-0 lead.

The score was 9-1 when West Michigan went back to work in the late innings. After another RBI-double from Gaynor in the seventh gave the Whitecaps a double-digit run total, Michael Rockett added a two-run single in the eighth that made it a 12-1 ballgame.

Rockett's late hit assured that all nine Whitecaps position players registered a hit on Saturday. Corey Jones led the attack with a 4-for-5 effort - his second four-hit game in the last week - while Gaynor, Plagman and Avisail Garcia collected three hits apiece and seven different Whitecaps registered multi-hit games. Plagman's line featured two doubles as he celebrated his 23rd birthday in style, while Brantly extended his hitting streak to a team-high 16 games.

Pitchers Trevor Feeney and Kevan Hess took care of the rest.

Feeney (10-11) turned in his 18th quality start of the year in 25 outings, tossing six solid innings of one-run baseball. He scattered seven hits while fanning two and walking one. The free pass he issued with two outs in the first inning was his first walk since July 18, ending a string of 31.1 consecutive walkless innings that spanned more than four starts and nearly reached a full month in length.

Hess (1) pitched the final three innings for his first Midwest League save, holding the Silver Hawks without a hit in the seventh and eighth innings before allowing a pair of runs in the ninth.

Adam Worthington (3-5, 5.53) suffered the loss for South Bend after getting knocked around for eight runs - five earned - on 11 hits in just three innings of work.

The Whitecaps continue their second-to-last homestand of the season on Sunday, August 15, with a 1:00 p.m. game against the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP Jared Wesson (5-1, 2.40) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Diogenes Rosario (4-6, 4.01) of the Silver Hawks. In addition to a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day, there will also be a special appearance by American Idol star and Michigan native Matt Giraud. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WESSON'S 11 STRIKEOUTS LEAD TO 11TH STRAIGHT WIN
08/15/2010 4:54 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Led by Jared Wesson's 11 strikeouts, the West Michigan Whitecaps won their 11th consecutive game on Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The win pushes West Michigan (25-24, 50-67) above the .500 mark for the first time all season while bringing the Whitecaps to within one game of the franchise-best 12-game winning streak established in 1999. The 'Caps have a chance to tie that record and complete a third consecutive series sweep in the finale of the three-game set with South Bend (20-28, 50-66) on Monday night.

Once again, starting pitching and early runs proved to be a potent combination for the Whitecaps.

Wesson (6-1) twirled six shutout innings and allowed just four hits and two walks, leading West Michigan to a combined six-hit shutout. The 24-year-old lefty out of Mississippi State notched multiple strikeouts in five of his six innings, and his 11 punch-outs were both a career-high and a Whitecaps' season-high.

The West Michigan starting rotation has now turned in seven consecutive quality starts, improving to 7-0 with a 1.05 ERA in their last seven ballgames.

Wesson's performance was coupled with an early flurry of offense as the Whitecaps seized control.

Jamie Johnson led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and advanced to second when the pitcher's throw to first base sailed high. Two batters later, Wade Gaynor's sacrifice fly gave West Michigan a 1-0 lead.

The 'Caps went back to work in the second, sending nine men to the plate for three more runs. Avisail Garcia was at third base with the infield in and one out when Hernan Perez hit a ball to second baseman David Nick, but the baserunner beat the throw to the plate while Perez reached first safely. He moved to second on the first of three base hits by Luis Alberto Sanz before scoring on Johnson's groundball single through the right side. Jeff Rowland followed with a single that loaded the bases while extending his hitting streak to 11 games, and Corey Jones drew a walk to force in a run and push the lead to 4-0.

In the fifth, West Michigan rallied again. Rowland led off with a walk and eventually scored from first on double by Gaynor that one-hopped the wall in left. Later in the frame, the bases were loaded when Clay Jones bounced a single through the left side for a 6-0 advantage.

Zach Samuels (3) earned the save out of the Whitecaps' bullpen, tossing the final three innings to complete Wesson's gem.

The loss went to Diogenes Rosario (4-7), who struggled in 3.1 innings and was knocked around for six runs - five earned - on eight hits and four walks.

The Whitecaps continue their second-to-last homestand of the season on Monday, August 16, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Victor Larez (7-9, 4.47) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Mike Belfiore (2-9, 4.27) of the Silver Hawks on Soccer Night, featuring a special appearance by two-time Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Tarpley. Fans can also pick up half-priced box or reserved seats by bringing a church or community bulletin to the box office thanks to an All Faiths Night presented by JQ 99 FM. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

PLAGMAN SAVES THE DAY AS WIN-STREAK REACHES 12
08/16/2010 10:29 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps had an ace up their sleeve on Monday night, coming back from a two-out deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 3-2, in dramatic fashion at Fifth Third Ballpark.

That ace was Tony Plagman, who stunned South Bend (20-29, 50-67) with a game-tying, pinch-hit triple before scoring the winning run.

The victory pushed West Michigan's (26-24, 52-67) winning streak to 12 games, tying a franchise record established in 1999. The Whitecaps have won 17 of their last 20 games since July 28, completing their third consecutive series sweep and moving one game ahead of Lansing with 20 to play in the race for the Eastern Division's second-half Wild Card berth.

The Whitecaps trailed by a 2-1 score heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Avisail Garcia sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single, taking a 1-2 pitch from Chris Odegaard and sending a low liner through the right side of the infield. Rob Brantly followed with a bouncer to the second baseman that looked like a double play ball, but David Nick bobbled it and could only get the out at first. After Clay Jones lined out, manager Joe DePastino brought Plagman off the bench with the game on the line and the winning streak in jeopardy.

The 23-year-old slugger - a ninth-round pick in this summer's draft out of Georgia Tech - was up to the task. After spending nearly the entire game on the bench, Plagman blasted a 1-0 pitch to deep center field that banged off the wall for a run-scoring triple. Two pitches later, Hernan Perez was in the batter's box when Odegaard fired a low pitch that snuck past catcher Tyson Van Winkle.

Plagman raced home with the game-winning run, crossing the plate to meet a mob of ecstatic teammates pouring out of the home dugout.

The opportunity to rally late for the 3-2 win was made possible by another excellent night from the pitching staff.

Victor Larez started and threw seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run (two total). Matt Little and Kenny Faulk followed out of the bullpen and stranded a combined five runners over the final two innings to hold the deficit at just one run. Little struck out Silver Hawks' slugger Matt Davidson with the bases loaded in the eighth, while Faulk used a strikeout and a pop-out to strand two men in scoring position in the top of the ninth. Faulk (5-4) was rewarded with the win after the 'Caps dramatic comeback.

Mike Belfiore turned in an impressive outing for South Bend, holding West Michigan to just one unearned run on four hits over 7.2 innings of work. Due to the late action, he did not figure into the decision.

The Whitecaps initially won the race to the scoreboard when Corey Jones hooked an RBI-double to right in the bottom of the first, but the Silver Hawks battled back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Larez retired the first 10 South Bend batters that he faced before Nick clubbed a triple to right-center with one out in the fourth. On the very next pitch, Bobby Borchering laced a double to right that tied the score.

In the fifth, Andrew Fie drew a two-out walk and advanced to second when a pickoff throw to first was lost in the sun. Ender Inciarte followed with a double to right-center that put South Bend ahead 2-1, marking the first time since Wednesday - a stretch of 47 innings - that West Michigan had trailed in a ballgame.

That deficit held until the bottom of the ninth, when the Whitecaps pulled off an improbably rally to keep their historic winning streak alive.

With just 10 regular season home games remaining, the Whitecaps continue their second-to-last homestand of the season on Wednesday, August 18, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (2-5, 5.57) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Matt Lollis (2-1, 2.12) of the TinCaps. In addition to post-game fireworks, there will be a swearing in ceremony for new Marines before the game and it will also be Special Olympics Night. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.
