LOLLIS STIFLES 'CAPS, HALTS WINNING STREAK AT 12
08/18/2010 10:54 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps' record-tying winning streak came to an end with a 5-1 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (26-25, 52-68) entered playing having won 17 of their previous 20 games and tying a franchise record set in 1999 with 12 straight victories. Fort Wayne (32-19, 68-53) has also been hot, winning for the 19th time in their last 25 games to knock the Whitecaps back into a tie with Lansing with 19 games remaining in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot.

The evening began ominously when a pair of errors charged to second baseman Corey Jones allowed Fort Wayne's first two batters to reach in the top of the first inning.

West Michigan starter Luis Angel Sanz was able to skirt out of trouble with the help of a play at the plate, eventually inducing a groundout to strand the bases loaded. Sanz worked in and out of trouble throughout his outing, stranding seven baserunners over the first three innings and carrying a shutout into the fifth.

Meanwhile, TinCaps' starter Matt Lollis (3-1, 1.93) dominated the evening and earned the victory. The 19-year-old right-hander consistently pounded the strike zone and kept the Whitecaps off-balance, throwing exactly 100 pitches over 7.2 innings while striking out eight and allowing five hits. The towering, 6-foot-7 right-hander did not issue a walk and allowed just one run that came around to score after his removal in the eighth inning.

The game was scoreless until Fort Wayne broke through in the top of the fifth. Jason Hagerty was at first base with two outs when Jedd Gyorko drove a screaming liner to right-center. Jeff Rowland broke to his left and seemed on his way to making the catch, but took a bad angle as the ball tailed over his head and bounced to the wall for a run-scoring double. Two pitches later, Daniel Meeley singled up the middle to score Gyorko for a 2-0 edge.

The TinCaps doubled the advantage in the seventh after drawing a pair of walks to open the inning. Meeley delivered another run-scoring single and Jonathan Galvez added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-0.

West Michigan finally reached the scoreboard after Lollis was pulled in the bottom of the eighth. Moments after Avisail Garcia stole second base, Hernan Perez singled through the middle to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Fort Wayne scored an insurance run to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the ninth. The Whitecaps put a pair of runners on base to threaten a rally in the bottom half of the frame, but TinCaps' closer Miles Mikolas (7) came in and retired all three batters he faced to slam the door shut.

Sanz (2-6) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work.

With just nine regular season home games remaining, the Whitecaps continue their second-to-last homestand of the season on Thursday, August 19, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-0, 3.79) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Michael Watt (5-4, 3.33) of the TinCaps. There will be $2 food and beverage specials on an Altogas Thrifty Thursday as well as a post-game concert by the Union Guns on Country Night. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

PLAGMAN'S HOMER CAPS COMEBACK WIN
08/19/2010 10:38 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps bounced back from an early deficit to grab a dramatic comeback win on Thursday, tying the game with three unearned runs in the sixth before Tony Plagman's solo homer in the seventh delivered a 6-5 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (27-25, 53-68) trailed 3-0 after a half-inning and 5-2 heading into the sixth before rallying for four unanswered runs to close the game. The come-from-behind victory exacted a measure of revenge from Fort Wayne (32-20, 68-54), who won the series-opener on Wednesday to snap the Whitecaps' franchise record-tying 12-game winning streak. The 'Caps will be have a one-game lead in the race for the final Eastern Division playoff spot heading into the rubber match of the three-game series on Friday night.

Behind by a 5-2 score, West Michigan benefitted from a crucial error in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

With runners at the corners and two away, Luis Alberto Sanz hit a sharp bouncer to the right side of the infield that snuck through the legs of rehabbing major leaguer David Eckstein. It was the first error committed at any level this season by Eckstein, who played 78 games with the San Diego Padres before landing on the Disabled List with a hamstring injury on July 7.

In addition to allowing one run to score, the error extended the inning. After a walk loaded the bases and the TinCaps made a pitching change, Hernan Perez yanked a bases-loaded double down the third base line to plate two runs and tie the score at 5-5.

One inning later, Plagman launched a solo homer to center field as the Whitecaps established their first lead of the night, 6-5.

The bullpen did the rest.

Zach Samuels (3-0) and Kenny Faulk (9) combined for four scoreless innings, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits. Samuels fanned four over three frames to earn the win while Faulk punched out a pair during a 1-2-3 ninth to notch the save.

Early on, the TinCaps jumped out in front for the second straight night.

Fort Wayne benefitted from consecutive walks to start the first inning, loading the bases with nobody out before Nate Freiman's groundball double play brought home the first run of the game. Two pitches later, Jedd Gyorko went the other way with a two-run homer to right-center that gave Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead.

Wade Gaynor helped the Whitecaps chip away. After lining a run-scoring double to left in the opening frame, the 22-year-old prospect led off the fourth with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The TinCaps countered in the fifth with a long two-run homer from Jason Hagerty that pushed their lead to 5-2, but the West Michigan bullpen held them in check the rest of the way while the Whitecaps offense rallied to victory.

With just eight regular season home games remaining, the Whitecaps conclude their second-to-last homestand of the season on Friday, August 20, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Trevor Feeney (10-11, 3.23) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Jose De Paula (8-3, 2.58) of the TinCaps. There will be a special appearance by former Detroit Tiger great Dick McAuliffe on a Tiger Friday, featuring a Tiger Stadium Replica Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans thanks to Kool Toyota and post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS DROP RUBBER MATCH TO FORT WAYNE
08/20/2010 10:28 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps lost a series for the first time since July 24-26 after dropping the rubber match of a three-game set, 7-3, to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (27-26, 53-69) fell behind early and never recovered, striking out 11 times and managing just five hits against a trio of stingy TinCaps' left-handers. Fort Wayne (33-20, 69-54) got two hits and three RBI from Padres' major leaguer David Eckstein, who finished his three-game rehabilitation assignment 3-for-9 with a double, one run, three RBI and a pair of walks.

The TinCaps scored first for the third straight night on Friday, sparked by a leadoff double from Danny Payne. After an errant pickoff throw to second allowed Payne to move to third, Eckstein's RBI-groundout gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead.

From there, the TinCaps were off and rolling.

Daniel Meeley led off the second with a double and scored after back-to-back singles by Edinson Rincon and Jonathan Galvez. Later in the frame there were men at second and third with two away when Eckstein golfed a two-run single to left to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

With one swing of the bat, the Whitecaps got back into the game in the bottom of the second. After Tony Plagman reached base on a one-out double to right, Avisail Garcia blasted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left-center to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Fort Wayne quickly answered in the top of the third. With two outs and a runner at first, Rincon clubbed a towering fly ball to left that sailed past the scoreboard for a two-run homer. Just like that, the TinCaps had established control with a 6-2 lead.

That was plenty of run support for the Fort Wayne pitching staff. Starter Jose De Paula set the tone with four strikeouts and two runs allowed over four innings, while piggyback hurler Josh Spence (2-0) earned an impressive win with six strikeouts in three perfect frames. Relievers Noah Mull and Stiven Osuna did the rest, tossing one inning each out of the bullpen.

Each team tacked on one more run. In the top of the fifth, West Michigan reliever Kevan Hess issued three walks, hit a batter, and uncorked two wild pitches to help Fort Wayne to a 7-2 advantage. In the bottom of the eighth, Rob Brantly stroked a leadoff double and came around to score on a two-base hit by Jeff Rowland for the 7-3 final.

The late hit by Rowland extended his hitting streak to 14 games. During the stretch, the 19th-rounder out of Georgia Tech is batting .423 with 12 runs scored.

Whitecaps' starter Trevor Feeney (10-12) watched his streak of seven consecutive quality starts came to an end with the loss. In just 3.1 innings of work, the righty was touched up for six runs - five earned - on 10 hits and a season-high three walks.

The Whitecaps hit the road for a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons that begins with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night at the Dow Diamond. LHP Jared Wesson (6-1, 2.17) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Ryan Christenson (2-0, 5.24) of the Loons. With just seven regular season home games remaining, the Whitecaps begin their last homestand of the season on Wednesday, August 25, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Ballpark. The 'Caps will wear special jerseys to help benefit the Ronald McDonald House and there will be a special appearance by heralded entertainment personality Myron Noodleman. There will also be Rally Towels for the first 1,000 fans thanks to McDonalds and post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS BUST OUT STICKS IN SERIES-OPENING WIN
08/21/2010 11:37 PM ET

MIDLAND, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps pounded out 19 hits on their way to an emphatic victory on Saturday night, overcoming an early deficit to beat the Great Lakes Loons, 11-4, in the opening game of a four-game series at the Dow Diamond.

West Michigan (28-26, 54-69) cushioned their lead to two games with 16 remaining in the race for the final Eastern Division playoff spot, beginning a stretch in which eight of 11 games will come against Great Lakes (37-17, 80-43), the team with the best record in all of full-season affiliated baseball.

Clay Jones led the way with a 3-for-5 night that included five RBI, while Corey Jones and Avisail Garcia each went 4-for-5. Garcia finished a home run shy of the cycle, becoming the third Whitecap player this season miss the elusive feat by just one hit.

Early on, it was the Loons that established a lead with single runs in each of the first two innings. Three infield singles, a stolen base, an error and a walk helped leadoff man Christian Lara round the bases in the top of the first, but Whitecaps' starter Jared Wesson stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage. In the second, Chris Jacobs led off with a double and later scored on Lara's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.

After failing to convert on a pair of run-scoring opportunities during the first two innings, the Whitecaps busted the floodgates open in the top of the third.

With men at the corners and one away, Wade Gaynor bounced a single up the middle that cut the deficit to 2-1. There were two away when Garcia sent a liner to center to tie the game. After a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Clay Jones delivered the big blow with a three-run double to gave West Michigan a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish.

The score was 5-3 when the 'Caps went back to work in the top of the fifth, stringing together four consecutive one-out hits. Tony Plagman started the rally with a single before Garcia lined a double to right-center that chased Loons' starter Ryan Christenson from the game. Hernan Perez and Clay Jones greeted reliever J.B. Paxson with consecutive run-scoring singles as the lead swelled to 8-3.

Clay Jones added another RBI-single to cap a two-run rally in the sixth while Jeff Rowland singled and scored in the seventh for the 11-4 final. Rowland went 3-for-6 on the night to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, just one shy of the team-high 16-gamer established by Rob Brantly from July 23-August 14.

Wesson (7-1) won his fifth consecutive decision for the Whitecaps. Although he allowed four runs on nine hits over five innings, he was able to limit the damage and avoid big innings while his offense surged to victory. Antonio Cruz followed with three scoreless frames out of the bullpen while Jordan Pratt struck out the side in the ninth.

Christenson (2-1) took the loss for Great Lakes after allowing seven runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings of work.

The Whitecaps play the second game of a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Dow Diamond. RHP Victor Larez (7-9, 4.27) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Matt Magill (6-4, 3.46) of the Loons. With just seven regular season home games remaining, the Whitecaps begin their final homestand of the season on Wednesday, August 25, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Ballpark. The 'Caps will wear special jerseys to help benefit the Ronald McDonald House and there will be a special appearance by the clown prince of baseball, Myron Noodleman. There will also be Rally Towels for the first 1,000 fans thanks to McDonalds and post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. 'CAPS RUN INTO HOME RUN BARRAGE IN MIDLAND
08/22/2010 6:57 PM ET

MIDLAND, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps got a taste of the Midwest League's most powerful team on Sunday afternoon, serving up three consecutive home runs during a four-pitch sequence in the first inning of a 7-1 loss to the Great Lakes Loons at the Dow Diamond.

The loss ended a franchise-record 11-game road winning streak for West Michigan (28-27, 54-70), who maintained their two-game lead in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot thanks to a fourth consecutive loss by the scuffling Lansing Lugnuts. Great Lakes (38-17, 81-43) improved the best record in all of full-season affiliated baseball on the strength of their first-inning power surge, increasing their league-leading home run total to 114.

The rally started with a one-out double by Nick Buss. Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed by slicing a run-scoring triple down the right field line, kicking off a stretch in which five runs crossed the plate over the course of a six-pitch span.

Moments later, the home run barrage began.

Blake Smith took a 1-0 offering and launched a towering two-run homer to right-center. Just one pitch later, Angelo Songco crushed a mammoth blast that cleared the ballpark and landed in the parking lot beyond the right field fence. Rafael Ynoa made it back-to-back-to-back jacks with a rally-capping blast to right-center that gave the Loons a 5-0 advantage.

Great Lakes starting pitcher Matt Magill (7-4) took care of the rest, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a bouncing ball from Jeff Rowland snuck through the right side of the infield for a leadoff single. The 20-year-old right-hander finished his day with six scoreless innings of two-hit baseball, striking out six and inducing one double play. Steve Smith (6) worked the final three innings for the save.

West Michigan collected seven hits over the final four innings after Magill's departure, but managed to scratch across just one unearned run in the top of the eighth. The Loons' J.T. Wise countered with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame, capping a 3-for-4 day and giving Great Lakes a commanding 7-1 lead.

By breaking up Magill's no-hit bid in the top of the sixth, Rowland extended his hitting streak to 16 games and tied the team-high established by Rob Brantly from July 23-August 14. During the stretch, Rowland is batting .419 with 13 runs scored to raise his batting average from .200 to .284.

Victor Larez (7-10) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps despite pitching very well after the rough first inning. After allowing five runs on six hits in the opening frame, Larez gave up just three hits over six scoreless frames the rest of the way. The damage was done, however, as he was charged with five runs on nine hits and three home runs over seven innings of work.

The Whitecaps play the third game of a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night at the Dow Diamond. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (2-6, 5.45) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Allen Webster (11-8, 2.83) of the Loons. WHITECAPS PULL AWAY LATE FOR 5-2 WIN
08/23/2010 11:16 PM ET

MIDLAND, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps broke a 2-2 tie with three late runs on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Monday night at the Dow Diamond.

West Michigan (29-27, 55-70) increased their lead to three games with 14 to play in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot, taking advantage of four Great Lakes (38-18, 81-44) errors to plate three unearned runs.

The game was tied at 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning when Jeff Rowland started the go-ahead rally with a bunt-single on the first pitch of the frame. Rowland advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Jones, while the Loons responded by intentionally walking Avisail Garcia.

It appeared the intentional walk would pay off for Great Lakes when Tony Plagman followed with a one-hopper back to the mound, but pitcher Jordan Roberts air-mailed his throw to second and Rowland came around for the go-ahead run. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Michael Rockett dumped a bloop-single beyond the drawn-in infield to score Garcia for the 4-2 lead.

One inning later, Jamie Johnson reached base on a one-out error and later scored on a two-out, RBI-single by Corey Jones for a 5-2 advantage.

Luis Angel Sanz (3-6) earned the win with a strong performance, pitching into the eighth inning and allowing two runs on six hits over 7.1 frames. Kenny Faulk (10) took over with a man aboard in the eighth, striking out four batters during a five-out save to record his 12th consecutive scoreless appearance.

Roberts (4-4, 2.89) suffered the loss for Great Lakes, allowing two runs - one earned - on one hit over 2.1 innings but committing a costly error during the decisive eighth inning rally.

Early on, the Whitecaps got off to a good start with a pair of two-out singles.

In the top of the first, Rowland reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a passed ball before Garcia brought him home with a two-out base hit up the middle. Two innings later, Jimmy Gulliver led off the third inning with a single and advanced all the way to third base thanks to a stolen base and a wild pitch on the same play. Later in the frame, Corey Jones lined a two-out, two-strike changeup into center field for a run-scoring single and a 2-0 lead.

Great Lakes came back to tie the score with single runs in the third and fifth innings. Jaime Ortiz singled in the third and was bunted to second, scoring on a base hit to center field by Christian Lara. In the fifth, Rafael Ynoa reached on a leadoff base hit and stole second before Ortiz singled him home to tie the score at 2-2.

With a 2-for-4 night, Rowland extended his hitting streak to 17 games - the longest by a Whitecap player in 2010.

The Whitecaps wrap up a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Dow Diamond. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-0, 4.88) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP Greg Wilborn (3-1, 2.78) of the Loons. 'CAPS DROP FINALE, SPLIT SERIES WITH LOONS
08/24/2010 11:04 PM ET

MIDLAND, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps were on the wrong side of history during a 9-3 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night at the Dow Diamond.

Great Lakes (39-18, 82-44) set a new franchise record with their 82nd win of the year while delivering manager Juan Bustabad his 700th career victory, all in front of a record crowd of 6,079. Despite the loss, West Michigan (29-28, 55-71) split the four-game series with the first-place Loons.

The Whitecaps will return to Fifth Third Ballpark with a two-game lead over the Lansing Lugnuts and just 13 games to play in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot, setting the stage for a crucial three-game set between the two contending clubs starting on Wednesday night.

Tuesday's series finale against Great Lakes was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Loons' Nick Buss drew a leadoff walk and was doubled to third by Blake Smith. Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Buss and open the scoring. Later in the frame, Jaime Ortiz turned on a 1-0 pitch and cranked a two-run homer to right field that gave the Loons a 3-0 lead.

One inning later, Great Lakes blew the game open.

The bottom of the fourth started with a double by Gorman Erickson and continued with a walk and a bunt-single that loaded the bases with nobody out. The first out was recorded on an infield grounder that resulted in a force out at the plate, but moments later Smith clubbed an opposite-field double that short-hopped the wall in left. Smith's big blow drove home all three runs, and Cavazos-Galvez followed with an RBI-single that made it a 7-0 ballgame.

That was more than enough for Loons' lefty Greg Wilborn (4-1), who fired off six shutout innings and struck out seven. Wilborn allowed just four hits and walked one, improving to 3-0 with 27 strikeouts over 20 scoreless innings in his three home starts since joining Great Lakes.

The Loons extended the lead with a Rafael Ynoa double in the sixth and a solo homer by Brian Ruggiano in the seventh to widen the gap to 9-0.

West Michigan broke up the shutout with a rally in the eighth. Wade Gaynor lined a two-run double down the left field line and Hernan Perez added a bases-loaded singles with two outs as the 'Caps pulled to within 9-3.

Patrick Cooper (1-1) took the loss for the Whitecaps. After striking out four through three hitless innings to start his outing, the 20-year-old right-hander was blitzed by the Loons offensive outbursts in the fourth and fifth frames. He lasted 4.1 innings and was charged with seven runs on five hits while fanning four and walking three.

With an 0-for-3 night, Jeff Rowland's 17-game hitting streak came to an end for West Michigan. The longest hitting streak by a Whitecap this year, Rowland hit .424 with 15 runs scored during the stretch that lasted from August 5-23.

With just seven home games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark for the final homestand of the year starting Wednesday, August 25. The 7:00 p.m. game against the Lansing Lugnuts will go a long way towards deciding which team will capture the Eastern Division's final playoff berth, as RHP Trevor Feeney (10-12, 3.44) takes the mound for West Michigan opposite RHP Matt Fields (4-7, 4.14) of the Lugnuts in the series opener. The 'Caps will wear special jerseys to help benefit the Ronald McDonald House and there will be an appearance by the clown prince of baseball, Myron Noodleman.

ROUND ONE GOES TO LANSING AS PLAYOFF RACE TIGHTENS
08/25/2010 10:54 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps and Lansing Lugnuts battled to the final pitch on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. In the end, a controversial call went against the Whitecaps to decide a 7-6 loss and kick-start a three-game series riddled with playoff implications.

West Michigan (29-29, 55-72) nearly overcame a 4-0 deficit after the top of the first and a 6-3 deficit by the middle of the sixth, eventually stranding the potential game-tying run at second base. With the victory, Lansing (28-30, 64-63) pulled to within one game of the Whitecaps with 12 to play in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot.

The 'Caps trailed by a 7-5 score before mounting a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth against Lugnuts' closer Steve Turnbull. Hernan Perez and Jamie Johnson each smacked doubles to right-center field to start the inning, pulling West Michigan to within one run and placing the potential game-tying run in scoring position with nobody out.

From there, Turbull battled back. After Jeff Rowland failed to lay down a sacrifice bunt and fell behind in a two-strike count, Turnbull punched him out looking with an off-speed pitch. Corey Jones came up next, working the count to 2-2 before fanning on a fastball down in the zone.

That brought Wade Gaynor to the plate with the game on the line. With a 1-2 count, the Whitecaps' leading run-producer checked his swing on a ball in the dirt - but base umpire John Bacon rung him up on the appeal. As the Whitecaps vehemently protested, the call ended the game and secured Lansing's 7-6 win.

Turnbull (21) notched the save with four strikeouts over 1.2 innings, while Lugnuts' starter Matt Fields (5-7) was rewarded with a win. Fields pitched six innings and allowed four runs - one earned - on five hits.

The loss went to Trevor Feeney (10-13), who overcame four unearned runs in the first inning to turn in a team-high 19th quality start. Over seven innings of work, the right-hander was charged with six runs - two earned - on eight hits while striking out four without issuing a walk.

The Whitecaps fell behind early due in part to a first-inning error that allowed the Lugnuts' Jake Marisnick to reach base with one out. Brad McElroy and Brad Glenn each followed with singles, scoring Marisnick for a 1-0 lead. After a fielder's choice groundout, Kevin Ahrens singled home McElroy with a liner into center and Jon Del Campo added a two-run double as Lansing jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.

West Michigan battled back with rallies in the first and third innings. Jamie Johnson led off the opening frame with a single and rounded the bases on an error and a pair of groundouts. Two innings later, Johnson was at second base when Rowland doubled to right-center and Gaynor chipped in with a two-out RBI-single that cut the deficit to 4-3.

The two clubs traded runs the rest of the way. Lansing's Karim Turkamani doubled home a run to highlight a two-run rally in the top of the sixth, while Tony Plagman tripled and scored for West Michigan in the bottom of the frame. In the eighth, Kevin Ahrens launched a solo homer in the top of the inning while Gaynor doubled and scored to counter in the bottom half.

That left the Whitecaps trailing by a 7-5 score, setting the stage for the ninth inning drama.

With just six home games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps continue the final homestand of the year at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 7:00 p.m. game against rival playoff hopeful Lansing on Thursday, August 26. LHP Jared Wesson (7-1, 2.54) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Casey Lawrence (0-1, 10.38) of the Lugnuts. The 'Caps will be wearing special jerseys for Pink Floyd Night and fans will be treated to a post-game laser light show. The first 2,500 fans will receive hand fans courtesy of DFCU Financial and everybody will be treated to $2 food and beverage specials on the final Altogas Thrifty Thursday of the season. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS TURN IT ON LATE FOR COMEBACK WIN
08/26/2010 11:00 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Thursday night, overcoming a late deficit to beat the Lansing Lugnuts, 10-6, at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (30-29, 56-72) collected nine of their 17 hits over their final two at-bats, preventing Lansing (28-31, 64-64) from pulling even in the playoff race and reasserting a two-game lead as the two clubs battle for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. Corey Jones went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead an offense in which all nine players contributed with at least one hit.

The Whitecaps were trailing 5-3 until the decisive bottom of the seventh inning, when everybody in the lineup contributed with a productive at-bat and the first two outs were recorded on sacrifices.

Michael Rockett led off with a groundball single while Hernan Perez split the gap in right-center to bring him home with a double. After a bunt advanced Perez to third and drew the infield in, Jeff Rowland singled through the left side to tie the score. Corey Jones promptly put West Michigan in front by slicing a double down the left field line to plate Rowland, and the 'Caps were off to the races from there.

Following a pitching change, a walk and a passed ball left runners to second and third for Tony Plagman's sacrifice fly. Avisail Garcia drove home a run on an infield single and proceeded to steal second, setting the stage for Rob Brantly to pull a run-scoring hit inside the bag at first. When the dust had settled, 10 Whitecaps had come to the plate to score six runs on six hits and grab a commanding 9-5 lead.

One inning later, Gaynor bounced a two-out single up the middle to score Perez and push the margin to 10-5.

In addition to the big night by Corey Jones, Jamie Johnson and Perez each went 3-for-4 and Rowland chipped in with a 2-for-5 effort. Rowland, Jones and Plagman also drove in two runs apiece.

Antonio Cruz (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen, entering in the seventh and tossing three solid innings to close out the game. He retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing three consecutive two-out singles and one run in the bottom of the ninth after the game had been decided.

Lansing reliever Brian Slover (3-7) suffered the loss and a blown save after getting roughed up for four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

The 'Caps emphatic comeback capped a seesaw affair that saw the lead change hands a number of times.

The Lugnuts jumped out to an early lead for the second straight night, pushing across single runs in the second and third innings. Sean Ochinko was in the middle of both rallies, leading off the second with a double and later scoring on a groundout. In the third, a two-out error allowed Brad Glenn to reach second base and Ochinko singled him home for a 2-0 lead.

The Whitecaps rallied to turn the score around in the bottom of the third. West Michigan broke out for four consecutive hits to open the inning, starting with a single by Perez and a ground rule double by Johnson. Rowland and Corey Jones followed with run-scoring singles to tie the score, while Plagman later added a two-out RBI-double for a 3-2 advantage.

Lansing countered with three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to temporarily recapture the lead. Kevin Ahrens led off the fifth with a double and scored on Ochinko's sacrifice fly to even the score once again. After a one-out walk in the sixth, Justin Jackson and Kevin Nolan smacked consecutive run-scoring extra-base hits as the Lugnuts seized a 5-3 edge.

With just five home games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps continue the final homestand of the year at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 7:00 p.m. game against rival playoff hopeful Lansing on Friday, August 27. RHP Victor Larez (7-10, 4.40) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Drew Hutchison (0-1, 1.84) of the Lugnuts. It will be the last Tiger Friday of the season, featuring a special appearance by Frank Howard and bobblehead dolls in his likeness for the first 1,000 fans. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS HOLD ON TO WIN GAME, SERIES
08/27/2010 10:32 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps took the rubber match of a crucial three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, edging their rival playoff hopeful by a 2-1 score to increase their lead to three games with just 10 to play in the regular season.

West Michigan (31-29, 57-72) stranded nine runners over the first four innings and left 11 men on base in all, but overcame a 1-for-11 night with runners in scoring position thanks to sturdy starting pitching and a gutty effort from the bullpen. While Lansing (28-32, 64-65) won the opener of the series on Wednesday, the 'Caps stormed back for two in a row to reassert their lead in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff berth.

Despite the missed opportunities early, the Whitecaps were able to scratch across single runs in the second and third to take a lead.

There were two outs in the second inning when Clay Jones and Hernan Perez singled and Jamie Johnson drew a walk to load the bases. Jeff Rowland followed with a free pass of his own to force in a run and start the scoring. One inning later, Tony Plagman smacked a double off the wall in right-center and Clay Jones delivered a two-out single to push the lead to 2-0.

The pitching staff took care of the rest.

Starter Victor Larez (8-10) pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just one run to earn the win, scattering seven hits over 6.1 frames. He gave up a triple to Brand Glenn leading off the fourth inning for Lansing's only run, striking out three and walking two.

Larez left the game with a slim 2-1 lead, men at the corners and one away in the seventh, but West Michigan's relief corps came up big to seal the victory.

Zach Samuels snuffed out the Lugnuts' seventh-inning rally, striking out Brad McElroy on a filthy splitter before inducing a foul-out from Sean Ochinko to strand runners at the corners. He went on to erase a one-out walk in the eighth with an inning-ending double play ball.

Closer Kenny Faulk (11) finished things off in the ninth. Eric Eiland singled with one out and went on to steal second, but Faulk blew three straight fastballs past Kevin Nolan to record the final out with his second strikeout of the night.

Drew Hutchison (0-2, 1.93) suffered the loss for Lansing, allowing two runs - one earned - on seven hits over four innings.

With just four home games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps host the Great Lakes Loons for the opener of a four-game series on Saturday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (3-6, 5.16) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Allen Webster (11-8, 2.79) of the Loons. In addition to Women in Baseball Night, the first 1,000 fans will receive t-shirts thanks to Comcast and everybody will be treated to a post-game fireworks show presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

WHITECAPS WHITTLE MAGIC NUMBER TO SIX
08/28/2010 11:24 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps continued their improbable charge towards a post-season berth with a 10-5 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, reducing their magic number to six with nine games to play in the 2010 regular season.

West Michigan (32-29, 58-72) won their third straight game and improved to 23-8 since July 28, increasing their lead to four games over the scuffling Lansing Lugnuts in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. Despite boasting the best record in all of full-season affiliated baseball, Great Lakes (41-20, 84-46) was charged with six walks, four wild pitches, three errors and a hit batsman in the loss.

Corey Jones put the Whitecaps on the board with an RBI-double in the opening frame, but it was a five-run explosion in the bottom of the fourth that gave West Michigan a wider cushion.

The rally started with singles by Wade Gaynor and Tony Plagman. Michael Rockett then laid down a sacrifice bunt to the left side, but the throw to first from third baseman Brian Ruggiano sailed away as Gaynor scored and the runners advanced to second and third. Consecutive walks to Rob Brantly and Clay Jones loaded the bases and forced in a run, while Jimmy Gulliver contributed a run-scoring groundout and Jamie Johnson added an RBI-single. Jeff Rowland capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to left that led to a 6-0 advantage.

The Loons rallied their way back into the game and pulled to within one run. Chris Jacobs clubbed an opposite-field two-run homer in the fifth, while a bases-loaded double by Nick Buss sparked a three-run seventh inning as Great Lakes trimmed the 'Caps lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, however, the Whitecaps took advantage of a series of unforced errors to plate two key insurance runs without putting the ball in play.

With Loons reliever Nick Gaudi on the mound, a leadoff hit batsman was followed by two wild pitches and a walk to leave Gaynor at first base and Corey Jones at third. Gaynor was running on a one-out pitch that skipped past the catcher low and away, allowing Jones to score as Gaynor rounded second and raced for third. The throw from catcher Gorman Erickson flew past the third baseman into left field, enabling Gaynor to dart home for the second run of the play. Thanks to a hit batsman, a walk, three wild pitches and an error, the Whitecaps had seized an 8-5 lead.

West Michigan added two more in the eighth as Johnson doubled home a run and scored on a fielder's choice groundout for a 10-5 advantage.

Luis Angel Sanz (4-6) earned the victory with a solid outing, although he was charged with five runs on six hits over 6.2 innings of work. Pitching into the seventh inning, three of the runs charged to Sanz came around to score after he was removed with two outs and the bases loaded.

Jordan Pratt (4) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings for the save. After allowing the three inherited runners to score in the seventh, he retired six of the seven men he faced over the final two innings.

The loss went to Great Lakes starter Allen Webster (11-9), who allowed six runs - four earned - on six hits over six frames.

With just three home games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps host the Great Lakes Loons for game two of a four-game series on Sunday, August 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-1, 6.35) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against LHP Greg Wilborn (4-1, 2.20) of the Loons. It will be the final Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day featuring Kids Eat Free, player autographs and catch-on-the-field before the game and Kids Run the Bases after the game. There will also be a special appearance by former Red Wings great and current broadcaster Mickey Redmond. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

COOPER, 'CAPS KEEP ROLLING
08/29/2010 4:31 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps came out swinging on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark, jumping ahead early and pounding a pair of home runs to beat the Great Lakes Loons, 8-1, for their fourth straight victory.

With just eight games remaining in the regular season, West Michigan (33-29, 59-72) reduced their magic number to five while padding their lead over the Lansing Lugnuts in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. The Whitecaps are 24-8 since July 28 and 9-7 on the year against Great Lakes (41-21, 84-47).

The Whitecaps hit the ground running with a three-run rally in the opening frame. Leadoff batter Jamie Johnson provided the spark with a leadoff single and Corey Jones sliced a liner to left for a one-out base hit. Wade Gaynor came through with a double down the third base line for the big blow, driving in both runners and later scoring on an error for a 3-0 lead.

That was plenty for Patrick Cooper (2-1) and the Whitecaps' pitching staff.

West Michigan's 21-year-old starter rolled through one of the Midwest League's most potent offenses, retiring 15 of the first 16 batters he faced and carrying a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning on his way to the victory. Chased from the game by a two-out RBI-double in the seventh, Cooper limited the Loons to one run on three hits over 6.2 solid innings of work. He struck out three and walked three, allowing multiple baserunners in an inning just once.

Meanwhile, the offense built a sizeable cushion.

Jeff Rowland stroked a run-scoring single through the right side in the fourth inning and Hernan Perez added a solo homer in the fifth. Alexis Espinoza provided the icing on the cake in the seventh inning, blasting an opposite-field three-run homer that made it an 8-1 ballgame.

Following Cooper's departure, the Whitecaps' bullpen turned in another solid performance.

Zach Samuels came in with runners at second and third and two outs in the seventh, inducing an inning-ending groundout to strand the runners before cruising through a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Nathan Newman finished things off with a scoreless ninth.

Five days after tossing six scoreless frames to beat West Michigan on his home turf, Greg Wilborn (4-2) was knocked around for the loss on Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark. The talented 23-year-old lefty was charged with five runs - four earned - on nine hits over five innings of work.

Only two regular season home games remain at Fifth Third Ballpark as the Whitecaps host the Great Lakes Loons for game three of a four-game set on Monday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m. RHP Trevor Feeney (10-13, 3.40) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Josh Wall (8-6, 3.76) of the Loons. It will be a JQ 99 FM All Faiths Night, offering fans half-price box or reserved tickets if they bring a church or community bulletin to the box office. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

FEENEY SETS RECORD AS 'CAPS KEEP CHARGING
08/30/2010 10:32 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps continued their stampede towards the post-season with a 10-3 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Monday, reducing their magic number to three with a fifth consecutive win at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The West Michigan (34-29, 60-72) victory combined with other action around the Midwest League to officially eliminate Bowling Green and South Bend from playoff contention while giving the 'Caps a five-game lead over the Lansing Lugnuts with seven games remaining in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff berth. The Whitecaps have led all 27 innings of the current series with Great Lakes (41-22, 84-48), outscoring the Loons 28-9 in the process.

Trevor Feeney (11-13) secured his place in franchise history with the win, tossing 7.2 strong innings to establish a new record for innings pitched in a single-season. The 24-year-old right-hander has logged a league-leading 179.2 innings, surpassing Nate Cornejo's previous record of 174.2 frames during the 1998 season. Feeney is also currently on pace to set new franchise records for fewest walks per nine innings (1.00) and highest strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.05).

Feeney scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs, notching his 20th quality start in 28 outings and striking out four without issuing a walk.

He received plenty of run support on Monday as the Whitecaps came out swinging once again.

Sparkplug Jamie Johnson started the bottom of the first inning by smacking a triple to right-center, making it five times in six games that the scrappy outfielder has led off the first inning with a hit. Jeff Rowland followed with a clean single to right field and later scored on a double to center field by Wade Gaynor, who advanced to third when the throw to the cutoff man got away. Tony Plagman capped the rally with a sacrifice fly as the Whitecaps seized an early 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, West Michigan used a power surge to pad the advantage. Alexis Espinoza clubbed the first pitch of the frame out of the yard to dead-center field and Hernan Perez made it back-to-back jacks with towering longball to left. Both players homered for the second consecutive day, staking the 'Caps to a 5-0 edge.

The Loons reached the scoreboard in the third on a two-run homer by Blake Smith, but the Whitecaps answered in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rowland ripped a two-run single through the right side to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

The score was 7-3 when West Michigan went back to work in the sixth. Jimmy Gulliver led off with a single, but there were two outs when Avisail Garcia legged out an infield hit and Gaynor drew a walk to load the bases. Tony Plagman promptly drew a walk to force in a run and Rob Brantly blooped a two-run single to left-center as the Whitecaps cemented the 10-3 final.

Josh Wall (8-7) suffered the loss for Great Lakes after getting knocked around for 10 runs - nine earned - on 12 hits over six innings of work.

The Whitecaps' last regular season home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, in the series finale against the Great Lakes Loons. LHP Jared Wesson (7-1, 2.61) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against LHP Ryan Christenson (2-1, 6.75) of the Loons. The first 1,500 kids 14 and under will receive youth jerseys courtesy of Kowalski, and fans can register for a drawing to receive game-worn jerseys on Shirt Off Our Backs Night. To cap it off, the 'Caps will celebrate a fantastic 2010 regular season with post-game fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS FALL SHORT OF SWEEP, INCH CLOSER TO PLAYOFFS

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Despite four-hit nights from both Wade Gaynor and Michael Rockett, the West Michigan Whitecaps' five-game winning streak was snapped during a 13-7 loss to the Great Lakes Loons in front of a crowd of 6,393 at Tuesday night's regular season home finale at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (34-30, 60-73) saw their magic number reduced to two thanks to Lansing's loss to Dayton, meaning that the Whitecaps can clinch a playoff berth with a win in any of the three games during their upcoming series with the Lugnuts. The 'Caps finished their final homestand with a 5-2 record but fell just short of a four-game sweep against Great Lakes (42-22, 85-48). Every batter in the Loons lineup registered a multi-hit game, led by a 4-for-5 night with three RBI from Brian Ruggiano.

The Loons started their offensive barrage with three consecutive extra-base hits to open the ballgame. Doubles by Nick Buss and Christian Lara led to the first run, while Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed with a triple to right-center as Great Lakes snatched a 2-0 lead.

The Whitecaps reached the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI-single by Gaynor, but the Loons exploded over the next two innings to assert control.

After a two-out bunt single in the second inning drove in a run to make it 3-1, Great Lakes busted out the sticks for a five-run rally in the third. The Loons rattled off six straight hits with nobody out, including run-scoring singles by J.T. Wise and Angelo Songco. The bases were loaded with Ruggiano went the other way with a two-run double, and Chris Jacobs capped the rally with a run-scoring groundout that provided Great Lakes with an 8-1 cushion.

Despite the healthy lead, the slugfest was far from over.

West Michigan countered with four extra-base hits in the bottom of the third. After Hernan Perez drew a leadoff walk, Rockett and Corey Jones cracked back-to-back RBI-doubles. On the very next pitch, Gaynor drilled a two-run homer to left that cut the deficit to 8-5.

From there, Loons reliever Jordan Roberts (6-4) took over to settle things down and, ultimately, earn the victory. The 24-year-old left-hander got the final out of the third and cruised through three scoreless frames in the middle innings before the Whitecaps finally got to him in the seventh. Roberts was charged with two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings, holding the 'Caps offense in check while Great Lakes continued to pad their lead.

The Loons crossed the plate three more times in the fourth and again in the sixth to extend their advantage to 12-5. Avisail Garcia's two-run triple in the seventh brought the Whitecaps to within five runs, but Great Lakes tacked on the final tally with a ninth-inning double by Christian Lara that cemented the 13-7 final.

Both starting pitchers got knocked around and failed to make it out of the third inning. Jared Wesson (7-2) had a five-game winning streak snapped, allowing eight runs on 12 hits over 2.2 innings in the loss. Ryan Christenson did not fare much better for Great Lakes, serving up five runs on eight hits over 2.2 frames in a no-decision.

The Whitecaps finish the 2010 regular season with a six-game road trip that begins with the opener of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1. RHP Victor Larez (8-10, 4.25) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Drew Hutchison (0-2, 1.93) of the Lugnuts. Although the home portion of the 2010 regular season is complete, the Whitecaps are fighting for a playoff berth and will have a 7:00 p.m. home game at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, September 8, if they qualify for the post-season.

WHITECAPS COME UP SHORT IN POTENTIAL CLINCHER
09/01/2010 10:35 PM ET

LANSING, MI - After a series-opening 3-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium, the West Michigan Whitecaps will have to wait for another night to confirm their reservations for the post-season.

The magic number remains at two for West Michigan (34-31, 60-74), whose lead over Lansing (30-35, 66-68) was cut to four games with five games to play in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. The Whitecaps can still clinch their seventh consecutive playoff berth by winning either of the two remaining games in the three-game series.

The story of Wednesday night's game was the Lugnuts' pitching duo of Drew Hutchison and Casey Lawrence, who combined to hold the Whitecaps' potent offense to just one run.

Hutchison (1-2) started and picked up the victory, striking out seven batters over five scoreless innings and limiting West Michigan to just two singles. He walked two and allowed only four baserunners, as the lone runner that reached scoring position against him did so on a walk and a stolen base.

Lawrence (1) took over in the sixth and tossed the final four innings for the save. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out two.

Lansing reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning thanks to doubles by Balbino Fuenmayor and Oliver Dominguez, but it was a two-run rally in the sixth that proved to be the difference.

Whitecaps' starter Victor Larez issued a walk and hit a batter to start the inning before a one-out single loaded the bases. It looked as though he might escape trouble when Eric Eiland popped up to shallow left for the second out, but Fuenmayor roped the very next pitch into left field for a two-run single and a 3-0 lead.

After being held to just three singles through the first seven innings, the West Michigan offense finally reached the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Hernan Perez started the rally by drilling a leadoff double into right-center and Jamie Johnson followed with a bunt-single. One out later, Corey Jones sliced a double to left that brought the 'Caps to within 3-1.

With runners at second and third and just one out, however, West Michigan came up short. Wade Gaynor popped out to the third baseman in foul territory and Tony Plagman groundout out to the right side as the Whitecaps stranded the potential game-tying run in scoring position.

Larez (8-11) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings of work.

The Whitecaps are closing out the 2010 regular season with a six-game road trip that continues with game two of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, September 2. RHP Luis Angel Sanz (4-6, 5.29) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against LHP Egan Smith (6-4, 4.79) of the Lugnuts. Although the home portion of the 2010 regular season is complete, the Whitecaps are fighting for a playoff berth and will have a 7:00 p.m. home game at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, September 8, if they qualify for the post-season.

'CAPS FALL AGAIN TO RESILIENT LUGNUTS
09/02/2010 10:43 PM ET

LANSING, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps were denied a spot in the post-season for the second straight evening on Thursday, defeated by the Lansing Lugnuts, 6-2, at Cooley Law School Stadium.

West Michigan (34-32, 60-75) fell behind early and left nine men on base as their lead over Lansing (31-35, 67-68) was cut to three games with four to play in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. The Whitecaps can still clinch a berth in the post-season by avoiding a sweep with a victory in the series finale on Friday night as the Lugnuts continue to fight to extend their season.

The Lugnuts' offensive star on Thursday was leadoff man Oliver Dominguez, who went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, a stolen base, and a pair of walks in four plate appearances.

Dominguez sparked Lansing to a first-inning rally by singling, stealing second, and taking third on a bunt before scoring on a broken-bat single by Brad McElroy. After a fielder's choice groundout put Brad Glenn at first in McElroy's place, K.C. Hobson drilled a double to right-center that resulted in a play at the plate - but as the ball bounced to catcher Luis Alberto Sanz, Glen bowled over the backstop and scored for a 2-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the second inning. Jake Marisnick smacked a leadoff triple to right-center and promptly came home on a sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, a key two-out error allowed another run to score as the margin swelled to 4-0.

Jamie Johnson tripled and scored to put the Whitecaps on the board in the third, only to watch a two-run homer by Dominguez extend the Lugnuts' lead to 6-1 after four innings of play.

West Michigan had a pair of bases-loaded opportunities in the fifth and seventh, both of which came with one out. In the fifth, Wade Gaynor bounced into a double play ball that ended the inning. Gaynor was able to cut the deficit to 6-2 on a groundout in the seventh, but Avisail Garcia followed with a groundout of his own to strand runners at second and third.

Egan Smith (7-4) picked up the win for Lansing, allowing one run over six innings. He struck out five without issuing a walk and scattered eight hits.

The loss went to Luis Angel Sanz (4-7), who struggled through 5.1 innings and gave up six runs - five earned - on nine hits and three walks.

The Whitecaps are closing out the 2010 regular season with a six-game road trip that continues with the finale of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, September 3. RHP Patrick Cooper (2-1, 5.40) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Dave Sever (6-9, 4.26) of the Lugnuts. Although the home portion of the 2010 regular season is complete, the Whitecaps are fighting for a playoff berth and will have a 7:00 p.m. home game at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, September 8, if they qualify for the post-season.

WHITECAPS SWEPT IN LANSING, PLAYOFF RACE CONTINUES
09/03/2010 11:32 PM ET

LANSING, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps headed into a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts needing just one victory to clinch a playoff berth. After an 8-6 loss on Friday night completed a series sweep at Cooley Law School Stadium, the Whitecaps are still waiting to punch their ticket to the post-season.

West Michigan (34-33, 60-76) had their lead trimmed to two games over Lansing (32-35, 68-68) in the race for the Eastern Division's final playoff spot. The Whitecaps will head to Fort Wayne for a three-game set to close out the regular season starting Saturday, while the Lugnuts will try to keep their playoff hopes alive during a trip to Lake County.

Friday's game was played through consistent rainfall, whipping winds, and unseasonable 50-degree temperatures. The sloppy weather contributed to a sloppy game that saw the 'Caps draw 10 walks but strand 11 runners on base.

Lansing's K.C. Hobson tripled and scored in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead, but West Michigan responded with five unanswered runs to jump out in front.

After Rob Brantly tied the game with his first professional home run in the top of the third, the Whitecaps rallied for a four-spot to break the deadlock in the fifth. After two singles and a free pass loaded the bases with one out, Corey Jones and Wade Gaynor drew consecutive walks to force in runs. Following a pitching change, Tony Plagman smacked a sacrifice fly and Corey Jones crossed the plate on a passed ball as West Michigan asserted a 5-1 advantage.

Over the next two innings, however, Lansing rallied for seven unanswered runs.

Brad McElroy drilled an RBI-single off the wall in right in the bottom of the fifth and later scored when Hobson blasted a towering fly ball off the top of the right field wall. After a pitching change, Randy Schwartz tacked on a sacrifice fly to pull the Lugnuts to within 5-4.

There was one out in the sixth when Whitecaps' reliever Zach Samuels walked two men and hit another to load the bases. The next four men all drove in runs, starting with an infield single by Brad Glenn and continuing with a sacrifice fly from Hobson. Schwartz delivered the go-ahead single that chased Samuels from the game, while Jake Marisnick capped the rally with a double past the bag at first for an 8-5 advantage.

West Michigan disputed the double and argued that it should have been a foul ball, leading to the ejection of manager Joe DePastino.

The 'Caps mounted one last rally in the top of the eighth. Brantly led off with a single, but it was three consecutive two-out walks that forced in a run and cut the deficit to 8-6. With the bases loaded, however, Gaynor struck out swinging to end the threat.

Three relievers figured into the decision, as Matt Wright (5-2) earned the win for Lansing with 2.2 innings of shutout baseball and Casey Beck (5) picked up the save with 1.1 scoreless frames.

Samuels (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year after being charged with four runs on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings of work.

The Whitecaps close out the 2010 regular season with a three-game road series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps that starts at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, September 4. RHP Trevor Feeney (11-13, 3.41) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against LHP Jose De Paula (8-4, 2.80) of the TinCaps. Although the home portion of the 2010 regular season is complete, the Whitecaps are fighting for a playoff berth and will have a 7:00 p.m. home game at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, September 8, if they qualify for the post-season.

OFFENSIVE REVIVAL REDUCES MAGIC NUMBER TO ONE
09/04/2010 11:14 PM ET

FORT WAYNE, IN - Alexis Espinoza finished a single shy of the cycle and the West Michigan Whitecaps reduced their magic number to one with an 8-3 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday night at Parkview Field.

West Michigan (35-33, 61-76) can clinch the Eastern Division's final playoff spot with a win in one of their two remaining games against Fort Wayne (40-28, 76-62), or by virtue of at least one Lansing Lugnuts' loss during their three-game series in Lake County. Saturday night's series-opener between Lansing and Lake County was postponed due to rain, so the Lugnuts and Captains will play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Whitecaps' potent offense reawakened on Saturday in Fort Wayne after a quiet series in Lansing to end the week. Espinoza led the way with a 3-for-3 night that included three runs, three RBI, a triple and a home run.

The Whitecaps got on the board early thanks to single runs in each of the first three innings.

Leadoff man Jamie Johnson drew a walk to start the ballgame and came around to score a first-inning run on a fielder's choice groundout by Avisail Garcia. Espinoza added an opposite-field solo homer in the second inning that sliced just inside of the right field foul pole, while Gaynor added a no-doubter to left in the third that cleared the fence for a 3-0 lead.

The TinCaps countered in the bottom of the third with a little bit of help. Jonathan Galvez started the rally with a one-out double when left fielder Michael Rockett lost the high fly ball in the sky. A base hit by Everett Williams put men at the corners and Danny Payne followed with a liner to the left side, but the ball glanced off the third baseman's glove and down the left field line as Galvez came home to score. Later in the frame, the bases were loaded with two outs when Jedd Gyorko came through with a two-run single that tied the game at 3-3.

The deadlock was short-lived, however, as West Michigan countered with an immediate answer in the top of the fourth.

After Clay Jones singled and Rob Brantly walked to open the inning, Espinoza drilled a triple that split the gap in right-center and brought home both runners. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly from Johnson pushed the Whitecaps' lead to 6-3.

West Michigan tacked on insurance runs on sacrifice flies in the seventh and eighth innings to reach the 8-3 final.

Trevor Feeney (12-13) earned the win in his final start of the regular season, allowing three runs on seven hits over five solid frames. The 24-year-old workhorse established a number of new single-season franchise records during a stellar 2010 campaign, logging 184.2 innings pitched while boasting a rate of 1.07 walks per nine innings and a 5.59 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He also tied a franchise record on Saturday by making his 29th start.

After Feeney's departure, Nathan Newman threw three hitless innings of relief and Antonio Cruz chipped in with a scoreless ninth.

Jose De Paula (8-5) suffered the loss for Fort Wayne after getting roughed up for six runs on five hits over five innings of work.

The Whitecaps close out the 2010 regular season with a three-game road series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps that continues with game two at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday, September 5. LHP Jared Wesson (7-2, 3.48) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-4, 4.05) of the TinCaps. Although the home portion of the 2010 regular season is complete, the Whitecaps are fighting for a playoff berth and will have a 7:00 p.m. home game at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday, September 8, if they qualify for the post-season.

SLOW BUT STEADY, 'CAPS RALLY FOR VICTORY
09/05/2010 10:47 PM ET

FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps celebrated their return to the post-season with a 5-4 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Sunday night at Parkview Field.

After having a playoff berth guaranteed by virtue of Lansing's loss earlier in the day, West Michigan (36-33, 62-76) overcame an early deficit by rattling off single runs in five consecutive innings. Corey Jones and Clay Jones each went 3-for-5 to lead the way, putting the Whitecaps in position to pull off a series sweep heading into Monday's regular season finale at Fort Wayne (40-29, 76-63).

The TinCaps landed the first blow by reaching the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Jeudy Valdez started the rally with a one-out single while Jason Hagerty followed with a walk. After the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Nate Freiman smacked a two-run double that gave Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.

The Whitecaps worked their way back into the game in the middle innings. Tony Plagman doubled in the fourth and scored on a one-out single by Clay Jones, while Corey Jones added a run-scoring single with two outs in the fifth that evened the score at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the TinCaps took advantage of a costly two-out error to recapture the lead. There were runners at first and second with two outs when Valdez skied a fly ball towards the foul line in shallow right. Alexis Espinoza raced over to make the play, but overran the ball and lunged back across his body as it fell to the ground. Both runners crossed the plate as Fort Wayne seized a 4-2 edge.

Despite the setback, the West Michigan Whitecaps continued to grind away and push runs across the plate.

Three of the first four batters in the sixth inning reached base on singles, while Jimmy Gulliver's run-scoring groundout cut the deficit to one. In the seventh, Hernan Perez drew a bases-loaded walk to collect his 50th RBI of the year and tie the score. The decisive rally came in the eighth, when Michael Rockett and Corey Jones each singled to put men at the corners and Tony Plagman delivered a sacrifice fly for the 5-4 lead.

That was enough to capture the victory thanks to a trio of Whitecaps pitchers that combined to hold Fort Wayne to just four hits.

Jared Wesson shrugged off a shaky first inning to throw six strong frames, allowing four runs - two earned - on just three hits while fanning six. Zach Samuels (4-1) earned the win by getting three outs in the seventh, while closer Kenny Faulk (12) struck out a pair and retired the last six men he faced on his way to a two-inning save.

TinCaps' reliever Josh Spence (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

The Whitecaps close out the 2010 regular season with a 3:05 p.m. Labor Day matinee on Monday, September 6, at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. RHP Victor Larez (8-11, 4.27) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against LHP Mike Watt (5-6, 3.83) of the TinCaps. West Michigan will return home to host the Lake County Captains for Game One of a best-of-three first-round playoff series at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8. Fans will be able to take advantage of an Altogas Thrifty Playoffs, featuring $1 hot dogs and $2 beer, Pepsi products and pretzels at all 2010 playoff home games. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.

'CAPS FALL SHY OF SWEEP IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
09/06/2010 7:14 PM ET

FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps closed out the 2010 regular season with an 11-8 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Monday afternoon at Parkview Field.

After taking two out of three games in the series, West Michigan (36-34, 62-77) will now set their sights on a Quarterfinal round playoff match-up with the Lake County Captains that begins on Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Meanwhile, Fort Wayne (41-29, 77-63) will take on the Great Lakes Loons in the Eastern Division's other first-round series.

The Whitecaps committed a season-high five errors on Monday, but still nearly overcome an eight-run deficit before their late rally fell short.

The TinCaps reached the scoreboard first by scoring three times in the bottom of the third, thanks in part to some sloppy defense. Everett Williams started the rally with a one-out single and proceeded to steal second base. Danny Payne followed with a bouncer back to the mound, but pitcher Richard Zumaya bobbled the baseball and then threw it away as Williams scored. Later in the frame, a two-out error by shortstop Hernan Perez loaded the bases and extended the inning for Edinson Rincon's two-run single as Fort Wayne took a 3-0 lead.

Moments later, the Whitecaps countered with a rally in the top of the fourth. With men at first and second and one away, Jimmy Gulliver drilled a 3-1 pitch into right-center that split the gap for a two-run triple. Though he was retired at the plate on a fielder's choice groundout by the next batter, West Michigan had cut the deficit to 3-2.

The one-run margin remained until the bottom of the sixth, when Jonathan Galvez blasted a solo homer to left-center. Griffin Benedict followed with a double off the left field wall and later scored on a base hit by Dean Anna as Fort Wayne reasserted a 5-2 advantage.

Gulliver cracked a solo homer in the top of the seventh to make it a 5-3 ballgame, but the TinCaps answered with six runs over the next two innings to build a sizeable cushion.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fort Wayne strung together four straight two-out singles to plate four more runs for a 9-3 lead. In the eighth, they opened the inning with three consecutive doubles to stretch the advantage to 11-3.

The Whitecaps made it interesting in the ninth, although the deficit proved too great to overcome. The rally started with two singles and a hit batsman to load the bases with nobody out. A fielder's choice groundout brought home the first run and Corey Jones delivered an RBI-single two batters later. After Clay Jones was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Tony Plagman clubbed a three-run double off the base of the wall in right - suddenly making it an 11-8 game.

But that was as close as the 'Caps would get, as Fort Wayne reliever Dan Ottone came in to get the game-ending groundout on just one pitch.

Mike Watt (6-6) earned the win with five solid innings for Fort Wayne, while Richard Zumaya (1-2) suffered the loss in his first start of the season for West Michigan.

After clinching a seventh consecutive post-season berth, the Whitecaps will return home to host the Lake County Captains for Game One of a best-of-three first-round playoff series at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8. Fans will be able to take advantage of an Altogas Thrifty Playoffs, featuring $1 hot dogs and $2 beer, Pepsi products and pretzels at all 2010 playoff home games. 'CAPS DROP GAME ONE AS SERIES SHIFTS TO LAKE COUNTY
09/08/2010 11:19 PM ET

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps' remarkable 2010 season hit a bump in the road on Wednesday night with a 4-2 loss to the Lake County Captains in the first game of their best-of-three playoff series at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan, who finished the regular season on a 27-13 tear to earn the Eastern Division's second-half wild card, was stymied by a dominant Lake County bullpen on Wednesday night. As the series shifts to Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, the Whitecaps will need to win two straight road games on Thursday and Friday to keep their season alive.

Lake County's Adam Abraham started the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the third, but West Michigan countered in the bottom of the fourth. Jamie Johnson started the rally with a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double by Corey Jones. After Wade Gaynor was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Tony Plagman delivered a sacrifice fly that tied the score at 1-1.

The Whitecaps took a lead in the bottom of the sixth. Corey Jones, Gaynor and Plagman all singled to load the bases with nobody out. Avisail Garcia was retired on an infield blooper for the first out, but Clay Jones was hit by a pitch to force in a run as West Michigan jumped ahead, 2-1.

That turned out to be all the Whitecaps could muster. Rob Brantly's broken-bat bouncer to the right side turned into a force out at the plate, and Hernan Perez fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.

Moments later, the Captains took control in the top of the seventh. Jason Smit was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Argenis Martinez reached on a bloop-single to the right side that failed to clear the infield, setting the stage for Delvi Cid to tie the score with a run-scoring flare that dropped into right-center field. After a double steal put men at second and third, Tyler Holt checked in with the biggest hit of the night - a tie-breaking two-run single to left that gave Lake County the decisive 4-2 lead.

The Captains bullpen took over from there.

Francisco Jimenez (1-0) threw 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win after relieving starter Brett Brach, who was charged with two runs over five innings after retiring the first nine men he faced in order. Jose Flores added 1.1 frames and struck out all four batters he faced, while Preston Guilmet (1) tossed a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Jimenez, Flores and Guilmet combined for four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits, striking out four and retiring 11 of the last 12 batters of the game while collecting the win and the save.

Victor Larez (0-1) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps despite turning in a solid outing. Through six innings, the lone run against him was Abraham's first-inning homer. Lake County broke through in the seventh, however, as Larez allowed three hits and plunked a batter before being removed. He was charged with four runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings, striking out four and walking one in the loss.

The Whitecaps' first-round playoff series against the Lake County Captains will shift to Eastlake, Ohio, for the remainder of the best-of-three match-up at Classic Park. The second game will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday as RHP Trevor Feeney takes the mound for West Michigan against LHP Vidal Nuno of Lake County. All of the action will be aired live on 107.3 WBBL-FM. If the Whitecaps are able to advance to the next round, the first game of the best-of-three Eastern Division championship will take place at Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday, September 11. During the Altogas Thrifty Playoffs, fans can take advantage of $1 hot dogs and $2 beer, Pepsi products and pretzels at all playoff home games.

FEENEY TWIRLS GEM AS 'CAPS FORCE GAME THREE
09/09/2010 10:55 PM ET

EASTLAKE, OH - Trevor Feeney pitched into the ninth inning and the West Michigan Whitecaps exploded for 18 hits to keep their season alive with an 8-0 win on Thursday night at Classic Park, forcing a decisive third game in their best-of-three playoff series against the Lake County Captains.

West Michigan (1-1, 62-77) and Lake County (1-1, 77-62) will meet again on Friday night for a do-or-die match-up, with the winner advancing to the Eastern Division championship while the loser's season will come to an end.

After dropping Wednesday's series-opener, 4-2, at Fifth Third Ballpark, the Whitecaps turned to ace Trevor Feeney to keep their season alive on Thursday.

The 24-year-old workhorse delivered, earning the victory with 8.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Feeney retired 25 of the first 28 batters he faced and allowed just three baserunners through the first eight innings. Fifteen of his 25 outs were recorded on the ground and another six were strikeouts, as Feeney gave up just four singles and walked two. Both walks came as he labored to finish the ninth inning, the only frame in which he allowed multiple baserunners. After striking out the first batter of the ninth, the right-hander issued two walks and a single before being removed.

Antonio Cruz followed out of the bullpen, retiring both men he faced and stranding the bases loaded to combine with Feeney on a four-hit shutout.

Meanwhile, every Whitecaps' batter notched a hit in an offensive explosion that was led by three-hit efforts from Corey Jones, Tony Plagman and Rob Brantly. Corey Jones also drove in three runs.

West Michigan reached the scoreboard with three straight hits to start the top of the second inning. After singles by Plagman and Avisail Garcia, Clay Jones stroked a double to left-center that split the gap and rolled to the wall. Plagman scored easily from second and Garcia tried to race all the way around from first, but catcher Roberto Perez blocked him off the plate as the throw came in and applied the tag for the out. Still, West Michigan came away with a 1-0 lead.

Captains' starter Vidal Nuno settled in from there, responding to the double from Clay Jones by retiring the next nine batters he faced in order.

West Michigan's next hit off Nuno did not come until the top of the fifth, when consecutive one-out singles by Brantly and Hernan Perez turned out to be the beginning of a key rally. Jamie Johnson smacked the first pitch he saw down the left field line, scoring Brantly and leaving runners at second and third with just one out. Following a strikeout, Corey Jones delivered a big two-out single that drove in both runners to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Whitecaps went back to work in the eighth, doubling the lead to put the game away.

Brantly and Perez once again started the rally with consecutive singles, but it was four straight two-out hits that plated all four runs. Michael Rockett yanked a two-run double inside the bag at third and promptly scored on a base hit by Corey Jones. Wade Gaynor singled to put runners at first and second, while Plagman capped the rally with a seeing-eye single to skipped off the second base bag and scored Corey Jones from second. Thanks to the two-out barrage, West Michigan's lead ballooned to a healthy 8-0.

Nuno (0-1) suffered the loss for Lake County after being charged with four runs on nine hits over five innings.

The Whitecaps and Captains will meet for the decisive third game of their quarterfinal playoff match-up at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at Classic Park. LHP Jared Wesson will take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Jason Knapp for Lake County in a must-win game for both teams. All of the action will be aired live on 1340 WJRW-AM, starting with the pre-game show at 6:20 p.m. If the Whitecaps are able to advance to the next round, the first game of the best-of-three Eastern Division championship will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday, September 11. During the Altogas Thrifty Playoffs, fans can take advantage of $1 hot dogs and $2 beer, Pepsi products and pretzels at all playoff home games.

SEASON ENDS WITH 3-2 LOSS IN LAKE COUNTY
09/10/2010 11:31 PM ET

EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps' season ended on Friday night with a 3-2 loss in the decisive third game of their first-round playoff series against the Lake County Captains at Classic Park.

After forcing the rubber match with an 8-0 win the night before, Friday's loss ended a remarkable season in which West Michigan (62-77) overcame their worst half in franchise history (26-43 in the first half) and the most losses in franchise history to clinch a seventh consecutive playoff berth on the strength of 25-8 stretch from July 28-August 30. While the 'Caps season came to an end, Lake County (77-62) moves on to play the Great Lakes Loons for the Eastern Division championship.

The Captains controlled the game with their pitching, capped by another stellar relief performance by Preston Guilmet.

It was a heady baserunning play in the bottom of the sixth, however, that led to what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Lake County led by a 2-1 score with Tyler Holt was at second and one out when Adam Abraham lined a single to center. Holt was on his way home when he recognized that Jamie Johnson's throw to the plate was well in front of him, so he alertly doubled back towards third. Though he was thrown out, the change in plans allowed Abraham to advance to second base. One batter later, he scored on a liner to center by Chris Kersten for a 3-1 edge.

The Whitecaps pulled within 3-2 in the top of the seventh. Avisail Garcia drew a leadoff walk and stole second before eventually scoring on a single to left by Rob Brantly.

Following Brantly's single, however, the Captains turned to their lock-down closer.

Guilmet (2) retired eight of the 10 men he faced and worked 2.2 innings for the save, striking out three to close out the ballgame. During the three-game series, Guilmet notched two saves and struck out four over 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

The win went to Lake County starter Jason Knapp (1-0), who was dominant over five scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. Both of the hits were infield singles and Knapp struck out six while walking just one. After striking out the side in the top of the first, Knapp faced the minimum in four of his five innings of work.

Jared Wesson (0-1) also threw a strong game despite taking the loss for West Michigan. He struck out seven over 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk, carrying a shutout into the fourth before the Captains broke through.

The game was scoreless until Lake County struck in the bottom of the fourth. Casey Frawley led off with a line-drive single to left-center and raced his way into scoring position by stealing second with one out. Moments later, Kersten drove him in with a base hit to left that gave Lake County the 1-0 advantage.

One inning later, Jason Smit blasted a leadoff homer to left field that gave the Captains a 2-0 edge.

The Whitecaps began their comeback bid against reliever Jose Flores in the top of the sixth. Johnson started the rally with a groundball single up the middle and moved to second after a walk by Jeff Rowland. With two away, Wade Gaynor lined a single up the middle that plated Johnson to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Each team plated a single run the rest of the way before the Captains were able to hold on for the victory.
