| GDT: 9/10/09 - DET (75-63) at KC (54-85) - 2:10 p.m. ET --- AT --- Tigers avoid Greinke, try to win finaleDetroit (75-63) at Kansas City (54-85), 2:10 p.m. ETBy Jason Beck / MLB.com09/10/09 1:47 AM ET KANSAS CITY -- The best news of the Tigers' off-day Monday was that they don't have to face Zack Greinke. The way the Tigers' two losses have gone since then, they have to be careful what they wish for. After Wednesday's 5-1 defeat, the Tigers are left to try to salvage a game in Kansas City, where the Royals are on their best stretch since the All-Star break and have a chance to sweep the Tigers for the first time since last September. That sweep last fall punctuated a nightmare 2008 season for the Tigers that began with a three-game sweep by the Royals at Comerica Park. Another September sweep by the Royals in 2006 cost the Tigers the American League Central. This one doesn't have nearly the same spoiler potential, but it could whittle the Tigers' division lead to 4 1/2 games depending on how the Twins fare at Toronto Thursday afternoon. All those previous Royals sweeps included dominant performances from Greinke. Last year's sweep also included Gil Meche. This time, the Tigers have faced neither, but fared no better. Talented but erratic Robinson Tejeda silenced Detroit's once-torrid offense Wednesday, one night after Yasuhiko Yabuta tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to allow the Royals to rally. Now comes Lenny DiNardo, the former Red Sox prospect turned Minor League journeyman and September callup from Triple-A Omaha. He's facing the Tigers at a time when their fortunes against lefty starters of all types has been far from expected. How surprising has it been? The Tigers' team leader in RBIs against left-handed pitching this year is Adam Everett with 22, followed by Ryan Raburn with 20. Nobody else has more than 17.Both Everett and Raburn are expected to be in the Tigers' starting lineup Thursday. Raburn will most likely start in center field, giving Curtis Granderson his second game off against a left-handed starter in three days. Manager Jim Leyland plans to start September callup Wilkin Ramirez in left field alongside Raburn in center. Before that happens, the Tigers will take batting practice on the field at Kauffman Stadium for the first time all series after rainy weather washed out pregame BP the past two nights. But Leyland doesn't believe that has been the cause of his team's sluggishness after sweeping the Rays last weekend. He believes the Tigers are in a rough stretch, and they've run into a Royals club playing with renewed enthusiasm. "When you're in [a race] like this, you can't help but notice the hype of it," Leyland said. "The players, nobody's immune to that kind of stuff. You know it's around. We came out of Tampa and everybody said we were the greatest thing since Post Toasties, and now all of a sudden we've lost a couple. You can't help but notice that stuff because it's there. The key is knowing how to handle it and keeping your concentration and zeroing in on what you're trying to accomplish as a team. As long as you do that, you'll be fine." DiNardo isn't the only lefty the Tigers have to worry about. Detroit starter Jarrod Washburn will be making his first start in a week and a half after lingering soreness in his left knee prompted the Tigers to skip him for a turn. He isn't pain-free, but after throwing a side session Tuesday, he's feeling well enough to give it a shot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: LHP Jarrod Washburn (9-8, 3.55 ERA)Washburn's left knee was too sore for him to make his previous scheduled start, against the Rays last Saturday, so he'll now go on nine days' rest against the Royals. Washburn, who said he's been told there's cartilage damage and received a pain-killing shot on the knee last Wednesday, was also skipped once with the Mariners earlier this year. Since coming over in the trade, the 35-year-old is 1-2 with a 6.81 ERA in six starts. In his last outing, against the Rays on Aug. 31, the lefty gave up eight runs in 5 2/3 innings. Washburn is 8-6 with a 2.94 ERA in 19 career games (18 starts) against the Royals. KC: LHP Lenny DiNardo (0-0, -.-- ERA) DiNardo was summoned from Triple-A Omaha to make this start and give Zack Greinke an extra day of rest after a grueling game against the Angels. The veteran left-hander has made 29 starts among his 89 Major League appearances for the Red Sox and A's, so he knows his way around. His MLB mark is 10-15, 4.93 ERA. For Omaha, he was 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 29 games (23 starts) and was named to the Pacific Coast League's postseason All-Star team. With the A's last year, he faced the Tigers once and gave up three runs on five hits in one inning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits... Triple-A Toledo right-hander Ryan Ketchner was named the International League's Pitcher of the Week. Ketchner, who is deaf, allowed one run over 16 innings in two starts for the Mud Hens last week. ... Tigers hitters are a combined 6-for-12 off DiNardo from his previous stops in Boston and Oakland. ... Willie Bloomquist is 13-for-29 lifetime off Washburn, his former teammate in Seattle. He's 2-for-6 off Washburn this year, but with three strikeouts. ... David DeJesus has a 10-game hitting streak, during which he's batting .304 (14-for-46).------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/ On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio • Gameday • Official game notes On television • On radio• / • XM Channel Schedule • Direct TV Extra Innings Schedule ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Friday: Tigers ( Nate Robertson, 1-1, 5.52 ERA) vs. Blue Jays ( Brian Tallet, 6-9, 5.31 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET• Saturday: Tigers ( Edwin Jackson, 12-6, 3.10 ERA) vs. Blue Jays ( Scott Richmond, 6-9, 4.76 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET
