| GDT: 8/28/09 - DET (67-59) VS TB (69-56) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- VS --- Tigers-Rays matchup has different feelDetroit (67-59) vs. Tampa Bay (69-56), 7:05 p.m. ETBy Jason Beck / MLB.com08/26/09 9:30 PM ET ANAHEIM -- The last time the Tigers faced the Rays in the regular season, Detroit was thinking ahead to the offseason, and Tampa Bay was lining up its pitching staff for the postseason. Suffice it to say, neither team will be thinking that far ahead this time. With the Tigers trying to build on their American League Central lead, and the Rays trying to hold on for dear life in the AL Wild Card race, it's difficult enough for these teams to think much beyond this stretch. Thinking about these three games is tough enough for manager Jim Leyland, except that they have another showdown next weekend at Tropicana Field. "We know that we've got seven games coming up with the defending American League champions in the next 10-12 days," Leyland said. "We're very aware of that, so we'll have to play good." Or as shortstop Adam Everett said, "Nobody said it was going to be easy." In some ways, the 2009 Rays have some resemblance to the 2007 Tigers, as both emerged as contenders after rising from nowhere to reach the World Series the previous season. After sneaking up on so many teams last year, the Rays no longer had that advantage going into this campaign. Yet, that young, inexperienced team that didn't seem to know any better about expectations when it outplayed the White Sox and Red Sox in October has a little more postseason savvy now and a lot more experience with the pressures of a stretch run. The '07 Tigers led the AL Central for much of the first half, then kept close pace with first-place Cleveland after the break before finally falling in September. Part of the challenge for that team was to keep its pitchers fresh after it racked up so many innings the previous season when it ran into October. What makes Tampa Bay a little different, and a little more dangerous in that regard, is that they're getting contributions from starters who didn't rack up big innings last year. David Price, the first-round pick whose emergence helped prompt the Rays to trade Edwin Jackson to Detroit this past winter, has five quality starts in his past seven outings. Jeff Niemann, the man taken two picks after Justin Verlander in the 2004 First-Player Draft, leads the Rays in wins. Then there's Matt Garza, the man whose emergence in Tampa Bay in 2008 was a great credit to former Twins Minor League pitching coordinator and current Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp. He'll pitch Friday's series opener coming off four straight August no-decisions, but with a high-strikeout arsenal of late. What will interest the Tigers is the .305 average he allows on pitches put in play since the All-Star break, and an opposing batting average that's 76 points higher for right-handed hitters. Keeping the Rays' offense contained is another matter. If Carl Crawford isn't enough of a concern for a team that just had to deal with the Angels' speed attack, former Tigers first baseman Carlos Pena and Tampa Bay's power arsenal are another matter. "They're loaded," Leyland said. "They're really a very talented team. They've got a tremendous combination of power and speed." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Rick Porcello (10-8, 4.39)The Tigers have taken every caution with their 20-year-old rookie hurler. They've given him an extra day of rest here and there, watched his pitch count and even skipped his spot in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break in an effort to limit his innings. Now, he actually gets to move up a day, starting on his regular four days' rest to take the spot of Armando Galarraga, who was sent to Triple-A for a 10-day breather to rest his sore elbow. Porcello gave up a pair of home runs -- a three-run drive and a solo shot -- as he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings to take a loss on Sunday in Oakland. TB: RHP Matt Garza (7-8, 3.74 ERA) Garza had his good stuff on Friday night, when he got a no-decision against the Rangers at Tropicana Field. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits and a home run in seven innings. Garza is considered by most to have the best stuff on the Rays' staff. His main obstacle has been finding consistency. Garza is 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers. He is 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA in two career starts at Comerica Park. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits... Magglio Ordonez is 7-for-14 with two doubles and six RBIs lifetime off Garza. ... The Tigers have 11 games left against AL East teams, all of them involving the Rays and Blue Jays. They're done with the Yankees and Red Sox. ... Miguel Cabrera has an 11-game hitting streak, during which he's batting .522 (24-for-46). He also has nine extra-base hits over his past seven games. ... Porcello owns a 5.96 ERA in outings off of four days' rest, compared with a 2.54 ERA when he pitches following five days off, according to research on baseball-reference.com.------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/ On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio • Gameday • Official game notes On television • On radio• • XM Channel Schedule • Direct TV Extra Innings Schedule ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Saturday: Tigers ( Nate Robertson, 1-0, 7.71 ERA) vs. Rays ( David Price, 6-6, 4.93 ERA), 4:05 p.m. ET

| STARTING LINEUPS:Magglio Ordonez is 7-for-14 off Rays starter Matt Garza, so he's back in the lineup in right field, batting just in front of Cabrera. The one other intriguing note was Gerald Laird catching Rick Porcello instead of Alex Avila, even against the right-handed starter. Actually, the other intriguing note was the weather, since it's going to be raining here for a while. We'll see what impact that has on the game, but it's eventually going to clear, so we'll be playing tonight. Whether or not it's delayed remains to be seen. RAYS 1. Jason Bartlett, SS 2.
