Nats come to terms with top pick Strasburg
Deal with Golden Spikes winner likely for record figure

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

08/18/09 12:17 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals agreed to terms with right-hander Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, before Monday's midnight ET deadline.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but according to MLB Network and multiple reports it's a four-year contract worth more than $15 million. That exceeds the previous record, the $10.5 million right-hander Mark Prior received from the Cubs after the 2001 Draft.

Strasburg is expected to be introduced at Nationals Park either Wednesday or Thursday.

The Nationals feel strongly that Strasburg can make an immediate impact in their rotation, maybe joining the team's Major League roster sometime in September.

If he is promoted to the big leagues this season, Strasburg will become only the third pitcher in baseball history to be drafted No. 1 and play in the Majors in the same year, joining Rangers left-hander David Clyde in 1973 and Orioles right-hander Ben McDonald in '89.

Strasburg, 20, went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 starts this season at San Diego State University en route to being named the Golden Spikes Award winner. He struck out 195 batters and issued just 19 walks in 109 innings.

"This kid is so impressive. We have nothing but the highest regard for him. If he wants to come and begin his career right now -- and do so with the largest contract ever given to any drafted player in the history of Major League Baseball -- we can help him accomplish that," Team president Stan Kasten told the AP on Saturday.

"We think he's not just a Draft pick -- we think he's a special player, which is why we extended ourselves as much as we did."

Strasburg ticketed for Triple-A
Phenom likely to make final Double-A start Sunday

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

05/01/10 12:46 PM ET

NEW YORK -- After Sunday's game against Double-A Altoona, Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg will be a step closer to the big leagues. According to a source in the Nationals organization, Strasburg is expected to be promoted to Triple-A Syracuse provided the weather is good for Sunday's game and he dominates on the mound.

The Nationals have not confirmed that Strasburg, the No.1 overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, will be promoted after his Sunday start. Strasburg will pitch five innings or throw 85 pitches for Double-A Harrisburg.

Once the promotion is announced, Strasburg could pitch against Triple-A Gwinnett late next week.

General manager Mike Rizzo was not available for comment, but said Wednesday that Strasburg will eventually go to Triple-A Syracuse. Strasburg has been dominant for Harrisburg, allowing one run in 17 1/3 innings and striking out 23.

"As he progresses, he is going to go to Syracuse and is going to pitch there until we deem he is ready to go to the next level," Rizzo said. "It's reasonable to assume he is going to be in Syracuse sometime soon.

"He is doing everything we thought he would do and more. He seems to get better and better and stronger and stronger each start."

Strasburg to debut vs. Pirates on June 8

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

05/31/10 6:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have decided that right-hander Stephen Strasburg will make his Major League debut on June 8 against Pirates -- provided that a rainout or injury doesn't stand in the way, according to general manager Mike Rizzo.

Strasburg is scheduled to make his final Minor League start on Thursday for Triple-A Syracuse in Buffalo. Strasburg will throw six innings or 95 pitches, Rizzo said.

Strasburg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, has been dominant in the Minors thus far, going a combined 6-2 with a 1.43 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse.

"Along with [pitching coordinator] Spin Williams and pitching coach Steve McCatty, we had a plan in place since Spring Training [for Strasburg]," Rizzo said. "We believe he is ready to go. We like that Stephen could bounce back from tough outings."
