| Tigers recall Carlos Guillen; switch hitter will start at designated hitter against White Sox by Chris Iott Friday July 24, 2009, 10:25 AM
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have been excited about the idea of getting a switch-hitting left fielder back in the lineup.
For now, they'll settle for adding a left-handed designated hitter.
The Tigers recalled Carlos Guillen from his injury rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Toledo today. He will be in the starting lineup as the designated hitter in both games of a day-night doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox.
"Our reports are that he's been swinging the bat really well," General Manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He's pain-free."
The Tigers will be careful with Guillen for now. The plan is to start him only as the designated hitter and only against right-handed pitchers. When Guillen first bats right-handed will be determined by how his shoulder feels.
"He is ready to hit," Dombrowski said. "He has no pain when he hits from the left-hand side at all. We're being real careful with the shoulder from the right-hand side, but he is feeling better and better all the time on that."
Dombrowski said Guillen's return to left field will depend on the shoulder as well.
"It could be three days and he could be out there or it could be longer," he said. I don't really know."
The Tigers have struggled offensively, losing four of their last five games by 2-1 scores, and they hope Guillen can add some much-needed punch to the middle of the lineup.
"It was certainly nice to fill out the lineup and write Guillen's name in it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It just looked different."
Guillen went 4-for-7 with an RBI in two games for Toledo.
The Tigers designated Josh Anderson for assignment to make room for Guillen. They have 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers. If he is not traded and is not claimed by another team on waivers, they then could send him to Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers will make another roster move prior to the second game of today's doubleheader to make room for pitcher Eddie Bonine, who will start the second game. Bonine will be sent back to Toledo following the game.

| Friday, July 24, 2009 Tigers' Carlos Guillen to play vs. Chicago; Jeremy Bonderman could return 'soon' Lynn Henning / The Detroit News
Detroit -- The Tigers recalled outfielder Carlos Guillen to the active roster Friday and designated outfielder Josh Anderson for assignment in a bid to pump life into the team's slumping offense.
Guillen, 33, has been on the disabled list since April with a sore shoulder but will be manager Jim Leyland's DH in both games of Friday's day-night doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.
Anderson was picked up by the Tigers at the end of spring training in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. He brought speed and defense to Leyland's lineup, but was not a big bat. And as the Tigers' July slump deepened, Anderson became expendable when Guillen was recalled from his rehab stint in the Tigers' farm system.
The Tigers made another surprising revelation Friday about right-hand pitcher Jeremy Bonderman. General manager Dave Dombrowski said Bonderman could "soon" return to the active roster -- probably in the bullpen.
Dombrowski and Leyland both said Bonderman has picked up considerable velocity in his recent bullpen sessions. Bonderman, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is "feeling fine," Dombrowski said.
