Tanker explodes on I-75; freeway closed The Detroit News
Hazel Park -- A tanker has crashed and caught fire on Interstate 75, causing a portion of an overpass to collapse near Nine Mile, police said.
Officials are not yet clear how the tanker crashed, but there was "a large explosion" and fire reported, said Michigan State Police Lt. Shannon Sims.
A black smoke cloud could be seen as far away as Warren. Traffic was snarled in both directions on I-75.
No injuries were reported as of 9 p.m., Hazel Park police said. Their department was responding along with police and fire officials from Madison Heights, Royal Oak and Ferndale.
Madison Heights police said southbound and northbound I-75 was closed, and traffic was being redirected to Interstate 696 and major roads including 11, 12, 13 and 14 Mile.

WITH VIDEO Car's driver: I don't need to apologize
ASSOCIATED PRESS • July 17, 2009
A man who police say lost control of his car along a Detroit area highway and caused a tanker carrying 13,000 gallons of fuel to crash and explode has offered no apology.
Twenty-seven-year-old Saied Haidarian-Shari of Clawson was one of three drivers who escaped Wednesday night’s fiery explosion along I-75 with minor injuries.
When asked Thursday night by WJBK-TV whether he felt he should apologize for the crash that also included a tractor-trailer, Haidarian-Shari said: “No.”
He says, “I don’t think I made a mistake,” adding that he’s given a statement to police.
Crews are removing debris from a collapsed section of bridge over the northbound expressway. The National Transportation Safety Board also is investigating.
No one has been cited. Video from WJBK-TV

Southbound lanes of I-75 stretch reopen today
BY MATT HELMS • FREE PRESS DRIVING COLUMNIST • July 19, 2009
Updated at 2:40 p.m.
The southbound lanes of I-75 between I-696 and 8 Mile Road reopened at 2 p.m. today, just four days after a tanker crash and inferno toppled an overpass and closed 2 miles of freeway.
Rob Morosi, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said the more heavily damaged northbound lanes, where Wednesday night’s accident occurred, could reopen by Monday afternoon or evening. That determination, however, will not be made until Monday morning.
Crews have been working round the clock to resurface the freeway after removing the half of the 9 Mile Road overpass that didn’t collapse in the fire and debris from the mess. The bridge was about a year old, and the highway had been resurfaced just two years ago.
This morning, crews swept broken concrete from atop the only remains of the 9 Mile Bridge, a pier along the southbound lanes, while below, they finished the repaving and prepared to stripe the roadway.
Onlookers gathered on both sides of I-75 to watch the work and some marveled at the speed at which the repairs were completed.
“I take my hat off to these guys,” said Don Rudgers, 72, a retired auto mechanic from Ferndale. “I’ve never seen so many bodies doing one thing. I can’t believe it.”
Rudgers told Morosi that he was “proud to see my tax monies go to good.”
Mary Libby, 59 of Ferndale says she’s been drawn to the site since the morning after the accident, watching crews turn what she called “almost a little war zone” into two smooth strips of asphalt.
“These men are doing a fabulous job,” Libby said.
About 100 feet of the southbound lanes were resurfaced. About 450 feet of the northbound lanes required repaving. Today, the effort to reopen those lanes was complicated by the discovery of a liquid seeping onto the surface of the roadway beyond the area that was being repaved. Morosi said the discovery required crews to pulverize the roadway and resurface it as well.
“We’re trying to determine what it is,” Morosi said today, “but it’s from the accident.”
The explosion occurred when a 27-year-old Clawson man, who had just received his driver’s license in May, lost control of his car and swerved into a tanker truck carrying 14,200 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel.
Morosi said the repaving will cost about $90,000; the demolition of the bridge and debris cleanup cost another $78,000. Reconstruction of the 9 Mile bridge is expected to cost $2 million and could take several months.
Once the police report is complete, the state attorney general’s office may seek to recover some of those costs from “whomever is cited to be at fault in the accident,” Morosi said.
No one was killed or seriously injured in the incident, which the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
State transportation officials had feared the pavement might have been so damaged it would need to be rebuilt completely, which could have taken weeks to finish. But core samples of the asphalt revealed the fire penetrated only an inch or two on either side of the expressway, allowing for a quicker and cheaper resurfacing.

Still; I bet if I ever tried to apply to WSU or U of M or MSU; my ass get turned down; but they will let in all the foreigners, Native Americans and Blacks that they can.
