Loses 0?

Shouldn't that be losses 0?

Or not?

I don't know?

But it looks odd scratch

Should have something for tie games in there too. After all; There was one in the NFL last year

Lions haven't had a tie game in the regular season since 1984 when they tied the Eagles

1993 in the Exhibition Season when they tied the Cowboys

I predict the Lions will do better this year.

Lions went 4-16 last year if you count the preseason. I predict 5-15 or so.

Lions 27, Falcons 26
Reserves outshine starters as Lions rally past Falcons
Tim Twentyman / The Detroit News

Detroit -- The preseason is by no means a precursor to how the regular season will play out. No one knows that more than Lions fans, whose team went 4-0 last preseason only to finish 0-16 in the regular season.

Still, fans looked for some sort of hint in Saturday's preseason opener against the Falcons to whether the 2009 Lions will be the same old product of imperfection, or the new and improved version.

That topic still is up for discussion after the Lions rallied for a 27-26 victory over the Falcons, but the win was a step in the right direction.

The Lions did some good things:

• Daunte Culpepper leading the offense on an 11-play, 50-yard drive that culminated in a 26-yard Jason Hanson field goal

• Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Derrick Williams in the third quarter.

But the Lions also did some bad things:

• Stafford throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown by Tony Gilbert of the Falcons in the third quarter

• The defense allowing Falcons running back Michael Turner to run for 63 yards on six carries, including a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Stafford made his Lions debut at the 6:31 mark of the second quarter to a roaring ovation. His first pass down the middle of the field was dropped by Keary Colbert. Stafford finished 7-of-14 for 114 yards, a touchdown, an interception and three dropped passes.

Culpepper, who started the game, finished 5-of-6 for 46 yards and also rushed three times for 12 yards.

It was third-string quarterback Drew Stanton that led the game-winning drive, getting the Lions down to the 29-yard line with a 14-yard scamper that set up a 47-yard field goal. Stanton finished 8-of-13 for 114 yards and a touchdown and four rushes for 59 yards.

Calvin Johnson, Bryant Johnson, Dennis Northcutt and John Standeford, the Lions' top four receivers, did not play due to injury.

A bright spot for the Lions was rookie running back Aaron Brown of TCU. Brown led the Lions with 47 yards rushing, including a 35-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also led the team with 51 receiving yards that included a 45-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. He capped the play with a cartwheel and back flip in the end zone, prompting an unsportsmanlike penalty.

One of the biggest areas of concern for the Lions heading into this season was their run defense. That's a big reason they signed beefy defensive tackles Grady Jackson (345 pounds) and Shaun Smith (325). But after one preseason game, stopping the run still seems to be a concern.

In an eerie flashback of last year's regular-season opener against the Falcons, Turner averaged more than 10 yards per carry and tore through two tackles on his 40-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter. Turner rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns against the Lions last year.

Yeah, this season is different. They could go 4-0 in the preseason but they will win at least 1 game in the regular. They picked up a good linebacker in Larry Foote, Kevin Smith could rush for over 1,500 yds this season. Calvin Johnson could have a big season thanks to Stafford and/or Culpepper

DETROIT 18, INDIANAPOLIS 17
Stanton leads Lions to narrow exhibition victory

By LARRY LAGE
AP SPORTS WRITER

Daunte Culpepper and Matthew Stafford seemed to do enough today to keep the Detroit Lions’ quarterback competition wide open. Heck, even Peyton Manning thought they did well.

FIND STATS HERE.

Culpepper threw for a touchdown, and Stafford passed for 160 yards to help Detroit beat the Indianapolis Colts, 18-17, in an exhibition game at Ford Field.

Three-time MVP Manning has said Stafford — the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft — would be best served to play right away as he did, but Manning left Ford Field impressed with Detroit’s top two QBs.

“I thought both of them looked good,” Manning said. “It seems like the race is going to go down to the wire.”

Lions coach Jim Schwartz chose to begin the first and third preseason games with Culpepper under center but wouldn’t discuss plans for the exhibition finale Thursday night at Buffalo.

Schwartz did say, though, he is planning to use his top players more than most coaches do in the fourth exhibition.

“We’re still in evaluation mode,” Schwartz said. “We’re going to approach it the same way we did these other three games.”

Culpepper completed seven of 12 passes for 67 yards, deftly avoiding the rush to make some throws and showing enough poise to connect with his third option on the TD — Bryant Johnson for a three-yard score.

“I feel great,” said Culpepper, who was a Pro Bowl QB in Minnesota before a knee injury in 2005. “I honestly feel like I did before I got hurt.”

Stafford was 13-of-19 and threw an interception, which his coach blamed on Johnson for not being more aggressive.

The strong-armed QB made a 40-yard throw to fellow rookie Derrick Williams and a 37-yarder to Calvin Johnson, showing why Detroit drafted the former Georgia star.

“I feel like I’ve played well,” Stafford said. “I don’t know what they’re going to do. It’s not up to me.”

Drew Stanton followed Culpepper and Stafford, and led Detroit (2-1) to the winning points with 4:13 left. He threw a 21-yard pass to rookie tight end Dan Gronkowski and a two-point conversion to receiver John Standeford.

While Detroit’s QB situation is murky, Manning is still in charge for the Colts, just as he has been since they drafted him first overall in 1998.

The reigning MVP was 12-of-15 for 123 yards, including a six-yard TD to Dallas Clark, who had six receptions for 63 yards.

“Both drives at the beginning of both halves were quality,” Manning said. “On the two drives where we did not get points, it was more us than them. It was us self-destructing.”

Colts rookie Curtis Painter, playing in place of sore backup Jim Sorgi (Fraser), completed nine of 14 passes for 145 yards and an interception that should’ve been caught by receiver John Matthews.

Indianapolis (1-2) put several banged-up players on the inactive list, but coach Jim Caldwell wasn’t in the mood to make excuses for the Lions’ 412 yards of offense.

“Regardless of who goes in there and plays for us, we expect them to play as well as anyone else, whether he’s a starter or not,” Caldwell said. “For the most part, we just didn’t get it done.”

Caldwell was encouraged cornerback Marlin Jackson and safety Antoine Bethea were healthy enough to play.

“In both cases, the guys haven’t had an opportunity to play much at all this preseason,” Caldwell said. “So to get them out there was very important.”

Notes: Colts DE Rudolph Hardie (knee), TE Tom Santi (ankle) and Lions DE Jason Hunter (ribs) were injured during the game. ... Detroit’s Kevin Smith had 50 yards on eight carries, including a 24-yard run. ... Joseph Addai ran for 22 yards on seven carries for the Colts. ... Calvin Johnson, who missed the first two preseason games with a sprained thumb, had four catches for 67 yards, and Bryant Johnson played for the first time since getting in an accident with a golf cart.

If they win the last preseason game they'll go 1-15

Lions 19, Redskins 14
Lions end losing streak with win over Redskins
John Niyo / The Detroit News

Detroit -- And on the 644th day, they won.

Barely.

The Lions finally ended their interminable losing streak Sunday, building an early lead and then hanging on for dear life before a paid attendance of 40,896 at Ford Field, the smallest crowd in stadium history for a regular-season game. The 19-14 victory -- the Lions first since Dec. 23, 2007 -- snapped a 19-game losing streak that was tied for the second-longest in NFL history.

A late touchdown by the Lions on a 2-yard run by Maurice Morris with 5:26 left capped an eight-play, 85-yard drive and proved to be the winning score Sunday. A 47-yard pass interference penalty on the Redskins' Chris Horton -- defending Bryant Johnson on the play -- set up the touchdown.

It proved important in the end, as the Redskins (1-2) -- aided by a successful replay challenge on Antwaan Randle-El's sideline circus catch -- quickly moved 72 yards in eight plays to close within 19-14. Jason Campbell's 4-yard touchdown pass to fullback Rock Cartwright made it a one-possession game again with 2:35 remaining.

A big play by rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford -- a 24-yard pass to Will Heller on second-and-9 from the Detroit 21 -- helped kill some of the remaining time.

But it was left to the defense to secure the Lions' first victory under new head coach Jim Schwartz, as the crowd -- small, but vocal -- roared, "De-fense! De-fense!" in the final 30 seconds.

The Lions actually called a timeout at the line of scrimmage with Washington facing fourth-and-10 from the Detroit 36 with 8 seconds left. But a final pass play -- including a pair of laterals -- came up well short of the end zone as time expired and the celebration began.

The Lions (1-2) actually looked dominant in taking a 13-0 halftime lead Sunday, though it took a goal-line stand by the defense to get some much-needed momentum.

Picked apart on the opening drive, the Lions' defense came up with a big stop on fourth-and goal from the 1-yard line. Clinton Portis came up short running wide to the left as the Redskins' season-long struggles in the red zone continued.

The Lions then responded with a 12-play, 99-yard touchdown drive, capped by Matthew Stafford's 21-yard toss to Bryant Johnson. The Redskins actually stopped the Lions on third down two plays earlier, but accepted a penalty to push Detroit out of field-goal range. Stafford made them pay, though, with a 21-yard scramble on third-and-13 --deftly eluding one would-be tackler in the open field -- to set up the score.

By halftime, the Lions had piled up a 274-94 advantage in total yards. Detroit had 116 yards rushing in the half, while the Redskins had zero, with running back Clinton Portis getting minus-2 yards on four carries. The defense held the Redskins on all three third-down plays, while Stafford & Co. converted 9 of 12 third-down opportunities, including four of five on an 18-play, 86-yard drive that chewed up the final 6:53 of the first half. That drive ended with Jason Hanson's 26-yard field goal for a 13-0 lead.

The Redskins played much of the quarter without defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who had to be carted off after a third-down sack of Stafford that forced the Hanson's first field goal with 8:56 left in the half.

Even with the lead, it was too early for a victory parade, though.

Just when the Lions started looking invincible, the defense reverted to its old ways. The Redskins needed only three plays on the opening possession of the second half to make it 13-7. Jason Campbell's 57-yard bomb to Santana Moss, who got behind cornerback Anthony Henry -- with no safety help -- for the score only 1:45 into the quarter.

On the next series, a huge pass interference call against the Lions' Calvin Johnson, who was flagged for pushing off on cornerback LaRon Landry on Stafford's pump-faked deep ball, negated a 58-yard reception to the Redskins' 3-yard line.

The Lions' defense, missing injured defensive end Dewayne White (thigh), made a play to keep Washington at arm's length, however. Safety Ko Simpson, who'd just entered the game replacing an injured starter Marquand Manuel (ankle), stepped in front of Jason Campbell's pass for an interception at the Washington 46.

The two teams traded punts the rest of the third quarter from there, but the Lions dodged a bullet when an apparent facemask penalty on cornerback Will James -- playing the entire game in place of starter Phillip Buchanon -- was waved off with 9:14 left.

Lions take another step ... back ... in 48-24 loss to Bears

Chicago

In the first quarter, Matthew Stafford was high-stepping off the field in celebration. In the third quarter, he was backpedaling on the field under siege. In the fourth, he was limping on the sideline, with his parka on and an ice pack on his injured right knee.

As progressions go, that's not exactly a positive sign for the Lions and their rookie quarterback.

And it provided a painful backdrop in Sunday's 48-24 loss at Soldier Field, where the Lions, who'd taken one step forward with last week's streak-busting victory, made a hasty retreat to their old form.

Tied at halftime with their would-be division rivals, they somehow managed to duplicate their season-opening pratfall at New Orleans. The defense only allowed 276 yards in the loss, but the Bears added 277 in the return game, making it look as if the Lions thought they were playing two-hand touch on punts and kickoffs.

And just when Stafford seemed to be making his rallying cry, marching the team down the field on a 14-play drive with the Lions trailing by 14 to start the fourth quarter, he yelped. Or yelled. Or something.

"I don't remember yelling," Stafford said after the game, standing solidly -- if not defiantly -- on two legs in the visitors' locker room.

Down and out

He laughed when told the TV replays showed what looked to be an anguished scream from Stafford after the Bears' Adewale Ogunleye dragged him down awkwardly on a third-down sack that forced the Lions to settle for a field goal.

"Oh, it was a silent yell," laughed Stafford, who'd danced off the field like a drum major after his 14-yard touchdown pass to Will Heller put the Lions up 14-7 early. "No, I don't know. It's just a reaction, I guess."

One can only guess the reaction was similar from Lions management as they watched their $72 million man curled up in the fetal position clutching his knee. The early diagnosis, according to a team source, is a patellar subfluxation, or temporary dislocation. But he dislocated that same kneecap as a high school senior -- the last time he missed a game to injury -- and he'll go for an MRI today before its decided how much time, if any, he'll miss.

"He twisted his knee a little bit," coach Jim Schwartz said. "Obviously, we'll have to do a lot of tests. But he wasn't able to really get it warmed back up again, and we didn't want to put him back in the game."

After initial reports from the sideline suggested Stafford was going to return on the Lions' next offensive series, he did stay seated, and Daunte Culpepper trotted out to finish the game.

Maybe that had something to do with the Bears quickly scoring on Matt Forte's 37-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach, 41-24. Or maybe not, as Schwartz grew visibly irritated when asked about that possibility after the game.

"If he was healthy enough to go back in the game, he would've gone back in the game," Schwartz said. "I wasn't conceding the game."

Asked again, Schwartz raised his voice and answered, "If he was healthy enough, he would have gone back in the game."

Or what was left of it, at that point.

No need for seconds

I'm not sure what the Lions' halftime routine is this season, but whatever they're doing, they'd better change it. They've given up a combined 37 points on opponents' first two third-quarter possessions this season, and the Lions have been outscored 61-12 after halftime the last three weeks.

Sunday, it was a 102-yard kickoff return from Johnny Knox that was the beginning of the end in what Schwartz described as "one of the worst second halves of football I've ever been associated with."

But four consecutive three-and-outs from the Lions offense -- four drives produced three punts, three sacks, one fumble and minus-12 yards -- sealed their fate.

For the game, the Bears' average starting field possession was the Detroit 46. For the visitors, it was their own 18. And for a team that hasn't won on the road since October 2007 -- yes, some losing streaks still linger with this franchise -- that's no way to get ahead.

Roethlisberger's TDs help Steelers edge out Lions

FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES

DETROIT — The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Detroit Lions on the field and in the stands.

Ben Roethlisberger had a season-high three touchdowns passes and Pittsburgh held on to beat Detroit 28-20 Sunday, winning two straight for the first time this season.

The Steelers (3-2), supported by thousands of black-and-gold clad fans, went ahead on Rashard Mendenhall’s TD run midway through the first quarter. They took a 15-point lead in the third on Roethlisberger’s 47-yard pass to rookie Mike Wallace.

Detroit (1-4) drove into Pittsburgh territory on the ensuing series, but Daunte Culpepper’s up-for-grabs pass was intercepted by Ryan Clark. Culpepper bounced back with a 25-yard TD to Dennis Northcutt to pull within eight with 4:57 to go.

The Steelers’ three-and-out drive gave Detroit the ball back at its 29 with 3:07 to go and two timeouts, but it got to the Pittsburgh 21 before stalling.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison had three sacks, matching the total he had entering the game, and forced a fumble, much to the delight of folks who filled Ford Field. The game drew 59,333 fans and at least half looked and sounded like they were rooting for the visitors.

Although the Lions converted a third-and-19 with a pass to Northcutt, Culpepper was sacked on three straight snaps — including LaMarr Woodley’s second of the series — forcing Detroit to use its last two timeouts and face a fourth-and-34 from the Pittsburgh 45.

Culpepper’s heave from midfield was knocked down by cornerback Ike Taylor just outside the goal line.

Roethlisberger was 23 of 30 for 277 yards with TD passes to Wallace, Heath Miller and Hines Ward. One poorly thrown deep out, was intercepted by William James and returned 38 yards for a score in the second quarter.

Culpepper played in place of No. 1 overall draft pick Matthew Stafford (injured right knee), and was 23 for 37 for 282 yards with a TD and an interception.

The Lions lost their best player, receiver Calvin Johnson, with an injured right leg in the first quarter. His right calf was wrapped as he watched the second half on the sideline.

Well, that was a lot closer game, against the "Super Bowl" Winning Steelers than I expected out of the Lions. Maybe there is some hope for a few more wins this season.
