It's easy. Take some oil or lard, mix in some sodium hydroxide and ethanol and heat. Cool, add salt water, filter, add scent, and voila.

The lab was originally for younger chemists but my professor made it sound like it was for college kids since it is a saponification reaction which is a base-catalyzed ester hydrolysis which is related to what we're learning

Have you tried creating scents? I once had the opportunity to try and create the aroma of fresh cut grass and vanilla. Sounded fun, but after an hour or so it becomes quite nauseating. :puke2:

No...but apparently if you add the scent before you remove the sodium hydroxide you can hydrolyze the oils (which are esters) and create something that smells really awful. I should have done that :haha:

You Brits still have your own money. Some of those coins are kind of weird. The 50 pence coin is some weird shape, the one pound is a foot and a half thick, etc.

50p has 5 sides, as does the 20p which is smaller. I like the £1 coin - makes more sense that having a lot of ragged £1 notes which never work in machines. And yes, I gather we make great gin, but I've never liked it. I should have been a Russki. Vodka - yum yum!
