Marlins add bench depth with Gload
Clubs acquires left-handed first baseman for player to be named

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- It didn't take long for the Marlins to address their lack of a left-handed bat off the bench.

Early Wednesday afternoon, the Marlins acquired Ross Gload and cash from the Royals for a player to be named. The deal for Gload came shortly after Florida dealt infielder Robert Andino to the Orioles for right-handed pitcher Hayden Penn.

Gload, who turns 33 on Sunday, hit .273 in 122 games with the Royals last year. With Kansas City, he was in position to back up former Marlin Mike Jacobs.

The Marlins cleared room for Gload when they released Dallas McPherson on Tuesday night. McPherson, a left-handed-hitting third baseman, belted 42 home runs at Triple-A Albuquerque last year.

The Marlins and Royals had the trade in place on Tuesday afternoon, and they were awaiting league approval before making the announcement.

"The release of McPherson, we knew we had Gload in hand," Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. "Nothing against Dallas. Obviously, great power, and a good guy. We just felt Gload was a better fit for this club right now, for a number of reasons."

Gload is a contact hitter who has experience. He can play the outfield as well as first base, and he has shown he can hit left-handed pitchers. Gload will also be used as a pinch-hitter.

"All those reasons made sense to us," Beinfest said.

"As long as there's a uniform on the other side, there's an opportunity," Gload said before leaving Royals camp in Arizona. "I think I can fit in pretty well with a National League ballclub. Ideally, I wish I could have been here, but on the other end of it, there are double switches and there's left field and right field and there's first base over there, too, so it'll be good."

The Marlins explored some other left-handed-hitting veterans, like Geoff Jenkins, who was released by the Phillies on Tuesday.

Before the two trades were announced, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed the team was in the market for a left-handed hitter off the bench.

Gload was a 13th-round Draft pick in 1997, and he broke in with the Cubs in 2000. In 2002, he appeared in 26 games for the Rockies. He was also with the White Sox for three seasons before he played in 2007-08 with the Royals.
