| Why?
16 games in a season is more than enough
They don't need a 17 or 18 game schedule
This ain't the CFL | |

| Thursday, March 26, 2009 NFL: Insider League expected to extend NFL season Commissioner wants to implement 17- or 18-game schedule as soon as 2011 campaign. John Niyo / The Detroit News
DANA POINT, Calif. -- Facing an uncertain economic future, it certainly sounds like the NFL will add games to its regular season whenever it can reach a collective bargaining agreement with the players' union.
The current CBA expires in 2010, and league commissioner Roger Goodell wrapped up the owners' meetings Wednesday by saying a proposal to expand the schedule to 17 or 18 games could come to a vote at the next owners' meeting in May.
"Anytime you have change, there is some reluctance," Goodell said. "But it's clear we don't need four preseason games anymore."
The plan likely would include replacing one or two preseason games with regular-season games. But plenty of other issues would be involved, from roster sizes and injured reserve to training camp schedules and TV deals. If it's a 17-game season, one option could be to add one neutral site game for each team, including more international games.
Goodell also is in favor of creating a new developmental league, replacing the now-defunct NFL Europe that was scrapped in 2007 because of huge financial losses. | |

| How stupid On the plus side, every single-season record is going to be broken ever-so-fast. The days of only guys like Barry Sanders rushing for 2,000 yards are gone - now every half-assed running back can do it. How will 17 games work? Each team gets 8 home games, 8 road games, and another either at home or away? How's it fair to have one team play 9 at home and another only 8? Neutral site games? Who in say Seattle would have wanted to watch Oakland take on Detroit last year? International games? There isn't enough interest to have 16 international games a year. Where do you play them? The English care a little bit as would the Mexicans but that's about it. NFL Europe was a major failure - Europeans don't like football. Canadians have their own football league. Mexicans don't mind football but the novelty will wear off quickly when they realize they don't care about a matchup between Seattle and Chicago. | |
