Anyone else ever go to turn a faucet on while wearing long sleeves and not realize the faucet is inside your sleeve and then get your arm/sleeve all wet? I do that fairly often.

The / is just a lazy form of the long s and s is the abbreviation for shilling.

Back in the day they used long s's all the time. Look at the original version of Paradise Lost:



To be extra confusing they often add a dash to the long s to make it really look like an f.
