| With Renteria in fold, Tigers focus on pitching Re-signing Rogers, Jones the top priority for Dombrowski; left fielder Jenkins won't be a target. Lynn Henning / The Detroit News
The Tigers are quietly following through with conversations surrounding two pitchers they hope to sign for next season: Kenny Rogers and Todd Jones.
The Tigers have until Nov. 13 to negotiate exclusively with either. At that point, they become free agents on the open market.
Detroit is believed to be offering one-year contracts to both.
Rogers, who turns 43 next month, is viewed as the veteran starter who can maintain balance in a rotation heavily populated with young pitchers such as Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman and, potentially, Andrew Miller.
Jones, 39, is considered an important insurance policy for the bullpen as the Tigers prepare to turn Joel Zumaya, 22, into their long-term closer.
"I don't have many updates," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Monday, after trading for shortstop Edgar Renteria.
Dombrowski said there had been no serious discussions with Rogers' agent, Scott Boras.
"But we continue to have interest in him," Dombrowski said.
He said Jones and his agent, Alan Hendricks, likely would follow up on Jones' expressed desire to pitch closer to his Alabama home, namely in Atlanta.
"Unless the Braves have interest, the next (likely) spot to come to is here," Dombrowski said. "Unless it's an offer he can't refuse, we would like to talk."
The Tigers, however, aren't expected to pursue left fielder Geoff Jenkins, whose $9 million option was declined by the Brewers.
Jenkins, 33, had loomed as a left-handed, power-hitting bat the team ideally had wanted to add to its lineup.
But with the acquisition of Renteria, whose offense represents an upgrade in Leyland's batting order, the Tigers are more comfortable with the tentative thought of platooning Marcus Thames and Timo Perez in left, with Ryan Raburn perhaps becoming part of the mix.
The Tigers are more concerned about nailing down pitching, which would get a boost if the Rogers and Jones talks are fruitful.

Tigers on Schilling's (long) list of possible '08 teams The Detroit News
The Detroit Tigers are one of 13 teams free-agent pitcher Curt Schilling would consider playing for next season, the right-handed writes on his blog at 38pitches.com. The others are the Red Sox, Indians, Angels, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, Braves, Padres, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Cardinals and Brewers. Schilling, 40, a right-handed starter, filed for free agency Tuesday. He indicated that he would prefer to return to Boston.
Schilling writes: "The list of teams that our family has talked over, that we think would be a fit for next year, should we not come back (to Boston), are pretty much teams in cities we agree would be OK for our last year, and teams I think have a legitimate shot atbeing in the post season and/orWorld Series." Schilling was 9-8 this season with a 3.87 ERA in 24 starts. His career record is 216-146.

| Tigers ask about Fuentes:
Relief pitching on Dombrowski's mind during possible trade talks
November 8, 2007
BY JON PAUL MOROSI
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
ORLANDO -- When the Tigers acquired Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves last week, they traded away two of their most intriguing prospects, right-hander Jair Jurrjens and centerfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
Now that Joel Zumaya's shoulder surgery has created an immediate need in the bullpen, club officials have been forced to assess whether there is enough depth left in the system to pursue more deals.
Advertisement "We're open-minded," Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday. "We have to see what happens."
Dombrowski acknowledged that most of his trade discussions during this week's general managers' meetings have centered on relief pitchers. He said he doesn't expect to strike a deal before the meetings end today, but added, "You can never tell."
The Tigers have asked about Colorado setup man Brian Fuentes, but the Rockies' willingness to trade him remains unclear. The Cubs and Pirates are among the teams who would consider moving bullpen arms.

Um I have to disagree with you on the very good part. Chad Durbin at the beginning of the year was a good back-up starter, but after they put him in the bullpen for a while he doesn't last as long anymore. He still does a good job while he is out there but he only lasts for 3 or 4 innings. True, we badly need pitching! The pitchers now have no stamina ! I sure hope they are going after at least 2 very good starters. Rogers seems to be leaning towards Texas again Rogers, Hunter on Rangers' wish list http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071113&content_id=2299889&vkey=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex

| Well, if they can get someone good to replace him, then let him go. We love him in Detroit, and he SAID he LOVED Detroit, but Borass is the troublemaker.
11/13/2007 11:03 PM ET Tigers, Rogers exploring options
"Detroit has made two contract offers to Rogers, both believed to be one-year deals, but both of which were declined. The longer the Rogers situation runs, the more uncertain the situation for the Tigers. Dombrowski, however, said they don't look at it as a situation where they need a final answer from Rogers one way or the other. Dombrowski has said more than once that he will be aggressive in trying to find a starting pitcher, whether it's Rogers or someone else." ------------------
11/14/2007 3:16 PM ET Free agent updates MLB.com
LHP Kenny Rogers, Tigers
Nov. 14: The stumbling block in negotiations between the Tigers and Rogers appears be guaranteed salary. While both sides are working with a one-year framework, agent Scott Boras told the Detroit Free Press that "the signing of a statured pitcher in this age group" has changed the framework for a deal. That could either refer to one-year contracts for Curt Schilling, who signed with the Red Sox for $8 million guaranteed and $2 million in weight incentives with the chance for even more in performance-based bonuses, or fellow Boras client Greg Maddux, whose new deal with San Diego guarantees him $10 million. The Tigers have made two contract offers to Rogers, which Booth Newspapers estimated to be in the range of $7-$8 million. The Rangers have expressed interest in Rogers, who has spent 12 of his 19 years in the Major Leagues with the Rangers over three different tours.
